Nazism The power of a modern media star is far greater than a dictator like Hitler could have ever imagined. Few stars with a modicum of intelligence could escape pondering the power relations inherent in stardom, and it’s fair to say that Bowie went in feet first during the mid-Seventies. Motivated by deep cultural pessimism, his fascination with Hitler’s Third Reich was both morbid and playful. Bowie was certainly no fascist, but some of his comments (and that unfortunate ‘wave’ at Victoria Station in 1976) were irresponsible. Kraftwerk Bowie’s switch from slick, US-inspired plastic soul to the electro sound experiments of the second side of Low was largely inspired by the work of Kraftwerk. Before the sessions began, Bowie had asked Tony Visconti to familiarise himself with the work of the German pioneers. Teutonic techno pioneers Kraftwerk.
