EUGENE DE ROY
-A recollection-
A scene in Eugene DeRoy's Symphonia piano and orchestrion roll
factory in the 1920's. The firm produced perforated paper rolls for
Hupfeld, Philipps, Popper, Weber, and other instruments.
It was about six or seven years ago, I recall, that I received a thin
blue paper airmail envelope with an Antwerp, Belgium postmark. Upon
opening the missive I noticed a rubber stamped "SYMPHONIA"
heading above the message.
The contents of the letter were fascinating. During 1962 and 1963 I
spent quite a bit of time writing to and visiting various persons in
Europe in an effort to track down a few orchestrions made years earlier
by Hupfeld, Philipps, Popper, and other firms. I wrote to collectors,
museums and to just about any other name I could find that might
possibly have a scrap of information on these nostalgic mechanical
music makers. At the time there was little collector interest in Europe
in large orchestrions. This situation was mainly due to the lack of
specimens to collect. At the same time, I might mention, there was an
intense interest in band organs - an interest that continues unabated
today. During a visit to Germany about this time I was amazed to learn
from a dealer that he had just sold a band organ to a collector in
England for the sum of $29,000.00. To be sure, the organ was a very
large and impressive one.
During my quest for orchestrions and orchestrion information (l
sought original catalogues and literature just as avidly as the
instruments themselves) letter after letter was answered with, "Sorry, I
don't have any Hupfeld orchestrions, nor do I know of anyone who
does... " - or something in a similar vein.
The Symphonia letter was different. The writer, Eugene DeRoy, not
only said that he knew of a number of surviving orchestrions, but he
went on to say that he once made music rolls fOI virtually every
different orchestrion type. He then proceeded to list new music rolls he
currently had in stock for the Hupfeld Helios, the Hupfeld Pan, the
Weber orchestrions of various types, and others· instruments which by
that time, after much futile searching, seemed to me to be almost
legendary and unobtainable.
An exchange of correspondence followed. My first purchase from
Mr. DeRoy was a Pianella Style C - a small keyboard piano with a
xylophone mounted horizontally at the top. In describing the Pianella
Mr. DeRoy sent a photocopy of an old catalogue illustration. From this
clue 1 found that he had a wonderful selection of old·time historical
material.
Next from Mr. DeRoy came a Hupfeld Helios 11/25 orchestrion with
a duplex roll mechanism. This impressive instrument measured 10'6"
high and was one of the classic pieces from what 1 like to call the "era
of elegant orchestrions" - the years just after the turn of the 20th
century. 1 lost no time buying the Helios 11/25 for the quoted four
figure sum. As might be logically expected, next came a trip to Belgium
to visit Mr. DeRoy in person.
His rendezvous instructions, relayed to me in advance in a letter,
went something like this: "I shall meet you at the airport. From there
we shall go to my daughter's home which is not far away. 1 shall then
show you your Hupfeld as she lives with her. I will never forget Mr.
DeRoy's charming trait of imparting human "him" and "her"
characteristics to his orchestrion descriptions!
After viewing the Helios 11/25 which was languishing in a rather
disassembled state in a cramped garage we drove to Mr. DeRoy's
combined home and workshop in Borgerhout, a district of Antwerp.
There 1 met Mrs. DeRoy, his charming wife.
Years earlier Symphonia had been a factory type of operation which
was located at different times in several parts of Antwerp. Now the

Symphonia Co. was a small over the counter shop which did its main
business in selling piano parts: new felt hammers, new strings, piano
hardware, and the like.
In Mr. and Mrs. DeRoy I found a veritable gold mine of information
pertaining to my favorite hobby subject: the "gOOd old days" when
coin-operated pianos, orchestrions, reproducing pianos, organs and
other self.playing instruments reigned supreme on the musical scene.
Mr. DeRoy (I never called him by his first name) entered the field of
mechanical music in the 1920's. His father-in-law was a barrel organ
maker, and from him Mr. DeRoy learned the trade. At this time
barrel-operated instruments of all kinds were losing favor to the newer
and more conveniently operated paper roll types. Paper music rolls
were cheap and could be made quickly as new popular tunes captured
the fancy of the public. To capitalize on this market the Symphonion
Music Roll Co. was born.
It was soon learned that there was a very large market for rolls to go
on the many types of coin pianos and orchestrions made in Germany
by Philipps, Hupfeld, Weber, Popper, and a host of others. The
manufacturers of the orchestrions viewed the production of music rolls
as a necessary evil to help sell the instruments. Mr. DeRoy viewed the
production of music rolls as a profitable and worthwhile business in
itself.
By coming on the market with new tunes faster than the orchestrion
makers could and by charging less for the rolls Symphonia soon had a
thriving business by the tail. It was all the firm could do to keep up
with the flood of orders that kept pouring in from all over Europe and,
to a lesser extent, from other parts of the world. I remember Mr.
DeRoy mentioning that he had several customers in Canada for Hupfeld
rolls and that one of them, a Newfoundland gentlemen, had ordered as
recently as the late 1950's.
At first the orchestrion makers resented this incursion into their
private music roll making preserve. Soon they learned that the
availability of inexpensive really ul}-to·date Symphonia rolls for their
instruments sharply increased their orchestrion selling business· and the
attitude changed from one of hostility to one of cooperation. They
started furnishing Symphonia with new tracker scales and layouts as
new types of instruments were introduced.
One maker, Imhof & Mulde of Vohrenbach, Germany, refused to go
along with Mr. DeRoy's business. In answer to a request for a tracker
bar layout scale for each of the Imhof instrumcnts Mr. DeRoy was told
that the making of Imhof rolls would not be possible . and that,
furthermore, they would not release any of the "top secret" scale
information to him. To this Mr. DeRoy replied, "AliI have to do is see
one of your instruments and in less than an hour I can figure out for
myself all of the information I need." Which he did.
During this time Ludwig Hupfeld of Leipzig, Germany, was the
world's largest maker of automatic musical instruments. From their
factory came a stream of mechanical marvels ranging from home player
pianos to reproducing pianos, from small coin pianos to gigantic Helios
and Pan orchestrions.

In 1963 Eugene DeRoy showed Q. David Bowers how he arranged, in this instance, "Way Down Yonder in New
Orleans," for the Popper & Co. orchestrions.
Mr. 'DeRoy was on semi-amiable terms with Hupfeld as he was
making all sorts of music rolls to fit his instruments - a situation they
weren't exactly delighted with, but one which they tolerated in view of
the ever-increasing Hupfeld sales in Mr. DeRoy's home country of
Belgium. Mr. DeRoy was a perceptive and intelligent man. It was with a
twinkle in his eyes that he told me, "I wrote to Hupfeld and asked if I
could visit their factory in order to familiarize myself with the
instruments so as to do a better job with the music rolls. When I went
there I found that it was a wonderful operation - and I spent quite a bit
of time stealing with my eyes' They viewed the making of orchestrions
as a super-secret process. The person who explained the making of
music rolls to me did it with equal awe and reverence. What they did
not know is that I not only understood all about making rolls, I knew
all about the inner parts of even the most complicated Hupfeld
instruments as well. While they thought I was having a good time as a
vacationing tourist in their plant I was actually learning much
information that enabled me to make the Symphonia Company more
efficienl..."
The automatic musical instrument business in the 1920's was, as
might be expected, highly competitive - so Hupfeld's attitude was not
surprising, nor was Imhof's refusal. In later years after each of these
firms ceased making instruments and rolls they turned over their
customers lists to Symphonia - a move that was profitable for Mr.
DeRoy and that was good customer relations for the factories.
As I was very interested in the history of automatic musical
instruments I asked Mr. DeRoy every question I could think of during
our first visit. In subsequent years I visited Mr. DeRoy several other
times, and each time there were more questions. Now, I wish that I had
asked even more as sometimes the answer to one question would spawn
two new ones!
Mr. DeRoy personally liked the violin players best of all. He admired
the Hupfeld Phonoliszt-Violina immensely and recalled that at one time
there were six hundred( I) of these instruments located in the city of
Antwerp alone. I was amazed to hear such a staggering figure and asked

if Brussels and other Belgian cities had similar quantities. "No, because
the Hupfeld distribution was irregular," he said. "While there were six
hundred sold in Antwerp none at all were sold in Brussels. Of course,
there may have been a few Phonoliszt-Violinas there as the instruments
were often resold on a second hand basis."
He related that he had written to all of his former customers for
Phonoliszt-Violina rolls in an effort to locate a surviving instrument to
keep as a memento for himself. Then, about 1963, he thought of the
good times of years earlier and decided that a Phonoliszt-Violina would
be the ideal item to bring back these memories. His searching efforts
were in vain. Seemingly, all of the six hundred violin players had
vanished into thin air. It was with pleasure that a year or so later I
turned up the owner of a Phonoliszt-Violina and gave Mr. DeRoy the
information. He happily tracked it down and made a deal to buy it.
Over the years Mr. DeRoy had heard of the Mills Violano-Virtuoso
violin player made in Chicago, but had never seen or heard one. I
obtained one of these and shipped it to him in Belgium.
When I first met Mr. DeRoy I had visions of locating vast quantities
of orchestrions in Europe. Mr. DeRoy's mailing list contained
thousands of names, and among these people and places there must be
at least a few hundredwho still had instruments - or so I reasoned. While
I was able to locate perhaps a dozen of the classic orchestrions through
Mr. DeRoy, most of the time the search led to a blank wall. "Sorry, but
our place was flooded in 1935," or, "We burned the Weber orchestrion
in 1939," or, "It was destroyed during the war" were typical answers to
inquiries.
Mr. and Mrs. DeRoy traveled with my wife, Mary, and me thousands
of miles through Belgium, Holland, France, Germany, and Switzerland
in the quest for instruments. I planned these excursions to include a
number of the original factory buildings where the instruments were
made years ago.
The Philipps factory, home of the famed Wurlitzer Mandolin and
Concert PianOrchestras sold in America, still stands at the corner of
Philipp Reis Strasse and Ohmstrasse in Bockenheim, a suburb of

The Black Forest area of Gennany has many musical memories. This
was the birthplace of the larger types of band organs and orchestrions.
In Freiburg the finn of M. Welte & Sons held forth from the 1870's
until the factory was demolished in an Allied air raid during the Second
World War. In the hills above Freihurg is the hamlet of Vohrenbach,
home of Imhof & Mukle, the orchestrion builders. The Imhof building
still stands. From the collector's point of view it serves a somewhat
more ignominious purpose today: that of an auto repair garage.
About twelve kilometers from Freiburg via a winding road lies
Waldkirch. This town, complete with the ruins of a castle overlooking it
from a nearby hillside, looks little different today that it must have
looked several decades ago when it was the locale of several of the
world's most prominent automatic musical instrument makers.
Alas, the firms of Gebr. Bruder and Ruth, two of the most famous
band organ builders,have perished. The Weber Brothers' orchestrion
factory no longer emits finely built Grandezza, Styria, So/ea, Brabo,
Maesto and other instruments.
It was fun to spend time in Waldkirch with Mr. DeRoy. He was
partial to Weber instruments of all types and was pleased to see that the
factory of the Weber Brothers still stood. "WEBER ORCHESTRION"
is still boldly lellered on the side of the ex-factory (now converted to
apartments) today.
One by one Mr. DeRoy checked out the names on his mailing list·
about 6,000 names in all! Most names were sent postcards. Most were
quickly returned by the post office with the French, Dutch, Belgian or
whatever equivalents of "Addressee unknown," or, "No longer in
business." But a few did respond, and these were followed up by Mr.
DeRoy with an in·person visit. On one trip to the Black Forest we
stopped to check on two instruments. Although they were not large nor

extremely valuable it was very interesting to see them in their original
locations. In the town of Bleibach a small hotel named "Gasthaus
Sonne" was still using a Weber orchestrion. It was a very early one that
used folding cardboard music. The establishment was so proud of this
musical relic that it sold a picture postcard featuring the instrument.
In another nearby town, ZeU, I saw an even earlier barrel operated
Weber orchestrion with dancing figures at the top. As I recall, one of
the instruments we saw that day was available for something like $7000
and the other wasn't for sale. Perhaps one or both have new homes with
collectors by now.
Mr. DeRoy was very kind to me, and I learned a lot from him.
Because of him much information that might never have otherwise seen
print made its way into "A Guidebook of Automatic Musical
Instruments." Many more notes, musical scales, and bits of historical
information from him will be published over the next year or two so
that all enthusiasts everywhere can share the information he gave so
generously.
Mr. DeRoy remembered and loved the instruments from years gone
by. As he had access to no restoredinstruments it was many years ago
that he last heard the different types of large orchestrions play. He
would have enjoyed visiting America - as he intended to do. He would
have enjoyed our people and the private and public collections of our
country.
Mr. DeRoy will never visit America. Early last summer we received
word from his daughter, Els (Mrs. Jeff) Baets, that Mr. DeRoy passed
away.
He will be fondly remembered by many. The musical scene today is
somewhat more pleasant for his having passed our way.

large ones, plain ones, ornate ones. But none have been more
elaborately crafted than the wonderful Bremond box we offer here.
The cabinet of this box, even if it had no musical feature, would be a
filling adornment to a palace' It is ornate and beautifully inlaid from
top to bottom and from side to side. We have never seen another like it.
Measurements are 54 inches high, 41 inches wide, and 22 inches
deep. The music box is an interchangeable cylinder Bremond dating
from the 1880's. The extra cylinders are stored in either one of two
drawers made for the purpose in the lower part of the cabinet. Each
cylinder has eight tunes, making a total program of thirty two melodies.
The cylinder is arranged in the popular and desired mandolin style
which gives an especially bright and cheerful sound to the music.
Over the music box is a large canopy inlaid with a motif of a lyre and
rare tropical plants. Surmounting the entire music box cabinet is a
graceful railing. Below are drawers at the front and sides. These are for
the storage of jewels, art. objects, and other treasures. A large
mirror·backed display area at the boltom center would be ideal for
displaying figurines or other pieces. Our pictures can give only a partial
conception of the majesty of this splendid instrument. Color

This lovely box is one of the most delicately proportioned we have
seen. Musically, the box is attractive too. It plays eight tunes from a
large 15Y-i" long cylinder. The music is played on a two part comb.
Apart from some redampering (we can do this for you at low cost) the
box is choice. The case could use some minor touch up work.
The instrument and the matching table measure 4' high (lid open), 3'
wide and 1'6" deep. The finish of the cabinet is of beautifully burled
golden-toned week. The attractiveness is further enhanced by an inlaid

CYLINDER MUSIC BOX AND TABLE

This cylinder box dates from the turn of the 20th century. It plays
12 tunes on a 13" long cylinder. The tune in play at a given time is
shown by a tune indicator.
The box is equipped with a mandolin or zither attachment which can
be turned on or off at will. The box plays well and has a sharp tone.
Dimensions are: 3'6" high (lid open), 2'4" wide, 1'3" deep. The
instrument is of ebony finish with transfer designs. The stand or table is
a bit wobbly and could use regluing at the joints. If You want us to have

ORCHESTRA BOX WITH AUTOMATIC FIGURES
This is one of the most interesting orchestra boxes in existence
anywhere. The striking of the bells is done by finely-detailed monkey
figures and, to the left of them, a mandarin gentleman operates the
beU-laden cymbalstern! All of these figures move as the music plays.
The box is a large and heavy one and measures 3' wide, 2'3" high,
and 1'5" deep. It plays from a large 20" long cylillder which has a
repertoire of eight different tunes. In addition to the eight tuned
musical bells and the cymbalstern there are two drums: a tenor drum
with eight beaters and a wood drum with eight beaters.
The music box case has an ebony finish. On the underside of the lid
is the program card which reveals that the box was originally sold in
Philadelphia many, many years ago (probably c. 1880 - 1890). The
instrument is basically choice and sound and all of the parts are intact.
However, the governor is stiff and the gear train will need attention. In
addition the comb should be worked on (although no teeth or tips are
defective) and the box should be carefully cleaned. We can do this for
you - a first class job - if you desire.

WOODEN CASE MUSICAL ALARM CLOCK
With Swiss musical movement
This musical alarm clock dates from the turn of the 20th century. It
is fairly large (for one of these) and measures 8" high, 7" wide, and 4"
deep. The clock sports a gleaming brass dial with brass trim cornices
surrounding it. A small handle at the top permits carrying it in the
manner of a carriage clock.
The musical movement is a small Swiss cylinder box of good quality.
It is mounted in the bottom and is actuated by the clockwork. The unit
is clean, attractive, and works nicely. Well worth the price we ask, if not

ELEGANT FRENCH MUSICAL CLOCK
In the base of this large, elegant, and beautiful French clock is a
cylinder music box movement. The instrument is wound by pulling a
cord. A small draw knob at the right side enables the music box portion
to be played at will.
The clock, which has its original bright and matte gold finish, is in
the form of a seated goddess. It is very ornate, and dates from the mid
Victorian era. The clock face is of white porcelain with black numerals.

OUTSTANDING MUSICAL TABLEAU
This musical and mechanical tableau is the prize piece from a leading
collection we purchased - an assembly of automatic musical
instruments and related items gathered over a period of nearly three
decades by a very discriminating and knowledgeable collector.
This particular tableau is really outstanding. Neither these words nor
our black and white illustration can adequately convey its "in person"
appeal Our suggestion is that if it interests you, you should request
that we send you some color photos of it. This, incidentally, is
something we'll gladly do for any item in this catalogue. Of course,
there's no obligation.
As tableaux go, this is a very large one. It is 2'2" high, 1'6" wide, and
10" deep. [t represents an alpine scene. In the background is a
mountain lake, undoubtedly inspired by Lake Lucerne or another one
of the Swiss favorites. Water appears to be exiting from the lake in a
large waterfall which tails into a gorge of rapids. On either side of the
gorge are quaint and colorful old buildings. A suspension bridge spans
the flowing water. As is the case with all tableaux, the scene is well
done with papier mache and similar materials, all painstakingly colored
by hand.
When the tableau is set in operation the ship rides the rapids and a
railroad train crosses the bridge. A windmill on the right bank of the
stream turns its sails in the wind.

CHOICE STYLE 240 REGINAPHONE
In carved mahogany case...
The Reginaphone, a combination music box and phonograph, made
its appearance shortly after the turn of the 20th century. They were an
effort on the part of Regina to capture some of the dollars the public
was spending on phonographs.
At first Regina ignored the phonograph, hoping it would "go away."
Regina regarded the phonograph as ephemeral - something the
American people would tire of quickly. About this time Regina had the
opportunity to purchase for a relatively low swn Eldridge R. Johnson's
Victor Talking Machine Co. The offer was summarily rejected. :\s it
turned out, this decision was like not buying Manhattan Island for £24.
The Victor Talking Machine Co. went on to achieve a worth of tens of
millions of dollars while Regina found music box sales dwindling to the
point that productio[l was discontinued around 1920.
Reginaphones arc well made and, as a rule, have excell!'nt tone. This
is true not only of the Style 240 offered in these paragraphs, but of all
Reginaphones we've encountered. As being of possible interest we
reprint what Regina had to say about the Reginaphone nearly sixty
years ago:
"The wedding of the Regina Music Box and the talking machine
occurred about six years ago. This new family took the name of
'Regin.aphone' - a Reginaphone being a Regina and a talking machine
combined in one instrument. The improvements made during six years
have been very great, and today the Reginaphone is in a class by itself ­
the instrument par excellence - the queen of all home entertainers.
"The Regina Music Box has its hosts of friends, and the talking

machine has brought delight to thousands. Each instrument has its own
advantages, and each its champions. Until recently it was impossible to
buy these two entertainers in combination, but now if there is a
division of opinion in any household as to the merits of music bbx or
talking machine, the question is easily settled by the purchase of a
Reginaphone.
"The Reginaphone brings to the home everything that can be sung or
spoken or played; it plays Regina discs and talking machine records
with equal facility and the change from one to the other can be made in
less than ten seconds; it will play more records with one winding and
run more evenly than any other talking machine, because it has a better
and stronger motor; it will play any talking machine disc record up to
14 inches in diameter.
"We invite comparison between the Reginaphone, as a talking
machine - without considering its further advantage as a music box ­
with any uther talking machine at any price. We also ask you to
consider that this superior talking machine is an attachment to the
Regina Music Box. The combination gives you entertainment that may
be infinitely varied, song and speech, monologue and grand opera,
interspersed with most delightful instrumental music from Regina discs.
No mere talking machine or phonograph can give you the added delight
of Regina music - but the Reginaphone does.
"Each Reginaphone has a high grade sound box, improved tapering
arm, and large nickel plated flower horn (exception: the inside horn
models - Ed.), and with each instrument we furnish 200 needles and
12 Regina discs..."
So ended the Regina sales presentation of the Reginaphone many
decades ago.
The instrument we offer here is the attractive and popular Style 240
- one of the prettiest Reginaphones ever made. It is in a rich mahogany
console with gracefully curving sides. At the front corners are carved
wooden lions' heads.
The Reginaphone measures 5'2" high with the lid open, or 4'1" with
the lid closed. It is 2' wide and 1'10" deep.
This specimen is attractive and plays nicely. About the only
improvement we could suggest would be refinishing, but this would not
be really necessary. The Reginaphone uses ordinary 78rpm discs when
the phonograph part is in use (the felt covered turntable is stored in the
bottom of the cabinet; it is placed on a special mandrel near the music
comb when you want to hear phonograph records). We presume that
you can find some of these records in your own locality, so we are not
including any. However, if you want some, just let us know and we'll
send along a dozen or two with our compliments. With it go a half
dozen regular 15y," Regina music box discs of varied tunes. Extra discs
are available cheaply.

LECTRIFIED 20%" REGINA DISC BOX
Ideal [or a comrnerciallocation...
This is a "one of a kind" item' made up by its previous owner by
combining parts of a Regina 27" disc changer with a 20%" Regina box.
It presently consists of a 20%" disc mechanism which is driven by an
electric motor. Colored lights ilJuminate the disc as it plays (which it
will do if you feed a quarter into tfle slot l ).
The case in which the mechanism is housed is a modified cabinet
basically consisting of a Style 34 Regina box.

There's not much to say about this, except that whoever removed
the innards from this instrument and lopped over $2000.00 from its
worth should have known better! Here is a mahogany cabinet, in choice
condition, for a 20%" Regina "parlor model" automatic disc changer.
Now it would make a nice china closet or, better, perhaps one of our

SPLENDID REGINA 20%" DISC CHANGER
Rare and beautiful!
Here's an item to titiJJate the imagination and desire of the Regina
specialist! Jt is an immaculate example of the beautiful and rare 20%"
automatic disc changer.
It's as easy as one - two - three! Top: Regina disc changer with
an empty rack. Middle: The 12 discs are loaded into the rack,
starting at the back. Bottom: The Regina plays! (The bot1om
front snaps off to permit easy access to the disc rack)

BEAUTIFUL 27" UPRIGHT REGINA
In elegant case...
This attractive 27" upright Regina music box dates from the end of
the 1890's. Standing 7'4" high, it is among the very largest music boxes
ever made in America.
The instrument uses the standard 27" Regina music box discs and
plays them on a large double comb. Thcre are a half dozen discs with
the box, and others are available cheaply with the purchase of this
instrument. A storage bin in the bottom tilts forward to permit discs to
be taken in and out easily.
The cabinet of this 27" Regina is one of the most beautiful we have
seen. It is of red mahogany ornamented with scrollwork, columns, and
an ornate top gallery. The center top portion displays the music box
dise behind a rectangular glass panel.
Measurements are: 7'4" high, 1'4" deep, and 3'3" wide. The music
box is coin operated by means of a nickel slot at the right side.
The instrument plays and has a nice tone. However, sometime during
its history someone "fixed" it with some non.original (or even
resembling original) parts in the governor and stop/start mechanism. As
a result this particular function does not work properly. Our suggestion
is to have a governor of the proper specification made. We were going
to ask $1995.00 for this box, but we are granting a S500 reduction
because of this internal work needed. This is really an over·allowance.
After fixing the parts - by either having us do it or doing it yourself ­
you should come out many dollars ahead. We might mention that the
music combs, tonality, and other features are fine and will not require
any work.

ORNATE 195/8" DISC POLYPHON
In beautiful walnut case...
A very ornate and beautiful example of the famous and popular 19
5/8" disc Polyphon (the second most popular PoJyphon disc size ­
15Y2" was the sales leader). This particular specimen has a slightly larger
than usual case with a large drawer in the bottom.
Overall measurements are: 4'1" high, 2' wide, and 1'2" deep. The
music box has a fine tone which is provided by a large double musical
comb. The instrument is coin operated and, in fact, has two coin slots
(which connect via a common coin duct) - one on each side of the
instrument.
This is an excellent and very musical Poly phon. We'll hazard a guess
that Polyphons of this size, appearance, and tonal quality wiJJ be
bringing over S1,000.00 each soon. There simply aren't enough of them
around to fill the demand as more and more people take up the
fascinating hobby of pursuing and listening to antique automatic
musical instruments!

BEAUTIFUL 24Y2" DISC POLYPHON
With matching base cabinet
This is the largest regular Polyphon disc size. The 24Y" diameter disc
plays on a very large double musical comb comprising 160 tuned teeth
in all.
The case of this instrument is of light golden walnut and is
ornamented by an ample quotient of beautiful carvings and scrollwork.
The overall measurements of the box are 6'5" high, 2'9" wide, and
1'9" deep. The "POLYPHON" name is beautifully inlaid in brass across
the top proscenium. Musically the instrument is superb and has a
wonderful tone. With it are a half dozen discs, and others are available
at low cost.
In his book, "Musical Boxes - A History and an Appreciation," the
late John E.T. Clark had this to say about the 24Yz" Polyphon: "The
(24Y,') Polyphon was, without doubt, the best of its kind (speaking of
all types of disc boxes) ever made. It rendered some of the classical
music even better than the later and larger 27" Regina disc musical
box... " Clark further quotes the original Polyphon catalogue for the
24Y2" box description: "This instrument exhibits the closest possible
following of the original tune, and is distinguished by its purity and
richness of tone."
A splendid example of the classic
24W' Polyphon, considered to be
one of the finest quality music boxes

The former owner of this Polyphon had several 24Y2" models! Most
persons would consider thel'Pselves fortunate to possess just one. His
accumulating in'tinct is your gain, for it is not often that we have these
lovely instruments to offer.
The beautiful upright PolypholJ here offered uses the standard 24Y2"
Polyphon discs, a half dozen of which go with it. Extras are available at
low cost. These discs feature truly superb musical arrangements. To
hear one of these Polyphons is to love it'
The cabinet is of light golden walnut. The design is of traditional
Victorian elegance. Indeed, this is a prnduct of the late Victorian era
(the era in its entirety spanned 1837 - 1901) - and shows it by
displaying many architectural embellishments! Actually, the box was
probably made circa 1898 - 1900. If you so desire, we can affix a
galler} or finial to the top for no extra charge. This box is virtually a
cousin of the specimen displayed at the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford,
England (illustrated facing p. 97 of John E.1'. Clark's book, "\1usical
Boxes.") and, like it, it may never have had a crest.

WONDERFUL 24W' UPRIGHT POLYPHON
With matching base cabinet
For a truly ma/(nificent classical upright disc box the 24Y." Poly phon
(or "Polyphone" with an "e" if you prefer - th" company used both
names) instrument is a prime candidate. As a group, upright disc boxes
of this size and specification are beautiful and possess outstanding
tonality. The pres"nl example is no exception!
In its tall light walnut case it is an instrument of rare and lasting
beauty. It uses the standard 24Y." disc (actually, closer to 24 5/8", but
"24Y2" is how it is usually catalogued). A half dozen go with it, and

Polyphon exist? This one is simply

BEAUTIFUL 3·DISC SYMPHONION MUSIC BOX
In lovely walnut case•..
The "Eroica" model Symphonion, familiarly known as the "3 disc
Symphonion" by collectors, is one of the most desired of all music box
types.
Symphonion described its own box in its catalogue thusly: "The
unexcelled capacity of modulation possessed by this instrument
produces tone effects which never have been heard before in any
mechanical music box. In fact, it is the most delightful and most
perfect instrument that has been introduced into the market up to date.
The case, which is of solid walnut, is very tastefully designed. It is
worked by two very powerful movements which drive three large steel
discs simultaneously, each disc working two large combs of fifty
tongues each, producing fine harmony (piccolo and piano) from three
hundred tongues in all..."
The Eroica has six musical combs of the diametrically opposed
"sublime harmonie" type. It uses three discs, marked "A", "B", and
"C", which are all played on the instrument at the same time. The discs

come in sets. With this instrument there are eight sets of three discs per
set; a total of 24 discs.
The instrument is basically in fine condition. One of the two spring
barrels requires attention and the case would be better with refinishing
and replacement of some trim parts. We can do all of this work for you

this catalogue can be expertly performed to your requirements.)
The case is of warm golden richly figured walnut and is beautiful to
behold. The discs are partially visible as they play via an open walnut

on one of the springs and a complete refinishing of the case, including
the replacement of several pieces of molding.

175/8" AMERICAN SYMPHONION MUSIC BOX
An unlovely example!
This instrument, purchased by us as being in "excellent condition",
is hardly that. New top and bottom panels have been made ror the
cabinet, and they don't match (they will match, however, if you start
over and refinish the entire box). The music mechanism has been
altered inasmuch as the original idler arm (the device that holds the disc
tightly against the star wheels) latch must have been missing. While the
replacement works after a fashion, it should be re-done. While you're at
it, adjust the dampers in the star wheel assembly for they really need It.
There are some bright sides to the instrument. With it are 17 discs of
varying quality. The instrument is large (5'4" high, 2'5" wide, 1'8"
deep) and, when rebuilt it should be of good tonal quality. However,
this is not a job for the beginner.
The instrument was, by the way, manufactured in Symphonion's
Asbury Park, N.]. factory in the late 1890's.

PRETTY 191/8" DISC SYMPHONION
With special sound chamber
This Symphonion is truly a lovely music box! Dating from the
1890's it uses the standard 19 1/8" Symphonion discs, a half dozen of
which are supplied with the instrument. Extras are available from us

Part of the well built and sturdy drive mechanism of the
Symphonion.
This particular Symphonion is an ornate one and is a lovely example
of late Victorian "gingerbread" architecture at its best! As such, it will
be attractive to all who see it.
Musically, the Symphonion has some interesting features. The combs.
are the opposed "sublime harmonie" type usually nearly universally
with the smaller table top Symphonions and on the famed 3-disc
Eroica, but not usually on large diameter styles such as the one'
presented here. The case is built with two sound chambers. One is in
the top of the instrument. This is not particularly unusual. (Most large
Polyphons, for instance, have this feature.) This Symphonion has an
additional chamber as well - a very unusual chamber behind the music
combs. Acoustic ports to the front are provided by two "f" holes, an
idea evidently inspired by the violin! These gracefully curving apertures
are visible in our illustration.
The specifications of this Symphonion are: 4' high, 2' wide, and 1'3"
deep. This attractive Symphonion with its mellow musical tone will fit
equally well in an advanced collection or by itself as a showpiece. An

This example of the popular 19 1/8" disc Symphonion is in a slightly
larger cabinet than usual. It measures 3'2" high, 2'1" wide, and 2'2"

This is a choice specimen of the 19 1/8" Symphonion, one of the

INEXPENSIVE ADLER MUSIC BOX
This compact Adler music box uses 7 1/8" discs. One disc is with it.
Measurements of the case are 9" wide, 9" deep, and 12" high (with the
lid open). The underside of the lid is decorated with the original
colorful allegorical scene of various beings with an eagle ("Adler"
means "eagle" in German) below. The box plays, but not very well ­

MONOPOL GRANDFATHER'S CLOCK
With 135/8" Monopol disc movement...
This lovely hall clock is a fine timepiece and a quality music box
combined. As a grandfather's clock it is an attractive piece of furniture.
The case is 7' high and is made of matched walnut wood ornamented
with latticework, turned columns, and carvings.
The musical portion consists of a 13 5/8" Monopol disc movement
with double combs arranged in the sublime harmonie style (as also used
by Symphonion). There must have been a close business connection
between Monopol and Symphonion, or else both used the same
suppliers, for the cases are quite similar in many instances as are the
disc sizes and appearance.
It would be nit-picking to say that the case could use refinishing and
some minor woodwork, but we will. Far worse ones have been
described as "perfect!" The Monopol is pretty and plays nice music.

This is a choice and attractive Kalliope disc box of the 9 5/8" disc

LARGE KALLIOPE BOX WITH BELLS
Kalliope music boxes are well built, possess an exceptional tonal
quality, and are favorites with advanced collectors. At one time the
Kalliope firm must have been very large (their circa 1900
adverti&ements showed a multi-stored building with "KALLIOPE"
emblazoned across the top - although, perhaps typically, this might
have been wishful thinking on the part of the advertising department,
and perhaps Kalliope occupied just a small portion of the building).
One thing is certain: as a breed, Kalliope boxes are fairly scarce,
although not of prohibitive rarity, today. This is a shame, for the world
of collection could use more instruments like this one!
The Kalliope offered here is a particularly nice one. It measures 3'3"
high, 2'5" wide, and 1'4" deep. It uses 20V." diameter discs, four of
which are with it. The instrument is equipped with six combs: four
musical combs and two combs to operate the twelve melodious bells.
The Kalliope has a lovely tone which is enhanced and reinforced by
the bells. This is a first class instrument; one of which you can be
justifiably proud. If you demand perfection, ask us to refinish it for
you (something that eventually should be done to all fine antique music
boxes). But, this is not necessary.

LARGE AND BEAUTIFUL ORPHEUS BOX
With elaborate etched glass front
Tlus beautiful Orpheus music box is a real showpiece. It is floor
standing and will do justice to any finely furnished room. The front is
made of a very elaborately etched glass window with with a musical
muse, floral scrolls, curlicues, and other fancy artwork all frosted on
the back side of the pane.
The lacy etchings on the front of the
Orpheus are truly beautiful! The rest
of the box is of high quality, too.
The musical mechanism consists of four combs, two on each side of
the star wheels. The combs are set up in a forte-piano arrangement with
one comb on each side haviqg fine small teeth (for soft passages) and
the other comb on each side with large teeth (for loud passages). The
instrument uses 22 5/8" Orpheus discs, a supply of which come with it.
The Orpheus measures 4'9" high and stands on its own legs. The
width is 2'4" and the depth is 1'7". It is coin operated via a slot on the
right side.
The instrument plays nicely and has a fine tone. It will be a credit to

OISCLESS STELLA MUSIC BOX
We have no discs for this 15Yz" Stella box, so if you have some you'll
save lots of money! The instrument is a Style 102 Stella in an attractive
mahogany case measuring 2'2" high (lid open), 2' wide, and 1'6" deep.
An attractive lithograph of a midnight steamboat race on the \Iississippi
decorates the underside of the lid.
We can't report on how this instrument sounds as we have no discs,
but we can say that the mechanism stops and starts correctly and runs
smoothly. The comb appears to be in good order. A buy for the dealer

A SUPERB CHORDEPHON
Automatic zither...
This is a really outstanding automatic musical instrument! It is a
Chordephon, an automatic self.playing zither manufactured circa 1891\.
Chordephons were manufactured in a variety of styles. Most were
rather small, possibly a fifth the size of this one, and required
continuous cranking by hand. Others were somewhat larger and were
mounted in an upright cabinet of similar appearance to the 19 5/8"
Poly phon case.
The one we offer here is a table model which is operated by inserting
a coin in a slot in the top of the richly finished mahogany base. The
Chordephon is powered by a strong spring and operates automatically.
The music is furnished by sixty piano strings, the larger ones of
which are copper wound, which are played by a picking mechanism
actuated by projections on the underside of the ste!'! discs.
The tone of the Chordephon is rirh, resonant, and haunting. It
sounds, believe it or not, just like a real zither! The scale of the
Chordephon is very large, so the musical arrangements are very
elaborate. It is not just a gadget (which is what we thought it might be
before we heard it play) but an outstanding automatic musical
instrument! It is a lot of fun to listen to, and with the nearly 20 discs
(each measuring a large 20" in diameter) with it there is a great variety
of music.

Although it is difficult to portray the "feel" of a music box with
print and photo we've done our best here to try to convince you
that here is a gem, a prize piece!
Measurements of the Chordephon are: 2'9" wide, 2'5" deep, and 8"
high. The ideal place to keep it would be on a wooden table by itself. It
is quite "photogenic" - the bright gold work of the zither contrasts
nicely with the claret color of the mahogany.
This identical instrument was a featured attraction at the 1969
convention of the Musical Box Society of Great Britain. The instrument
has been restored and refinished and is ready to take its place in the
finest collectio n.

"LE GLADIATOR" MECHANICAL DULCIMER
From one of America's finest private collections comes this attractive
example of the mechanical dulcimer (or, perhaps, "mechanical
mandolin" would be a better description). The instrument has 30 keys
or playing notes which are struck by re-iterating piano hammers. The
result is a strumming loud mandolin-like tone.
Such instruments were made in a variety of styles, the best known
being the "Piano Melodico" (also fancifully called the "Piano
Orchestrion") which was mass marketed circa 1890·1900.
The present example dates from an earlier era. Named "Le
Gladiator," a title incised on the lid in gracefully flowing script, the
instrument appears to be of French origin. It was probably made circa
1870 - 1890.
The interesting appearance and brilliant
mandolin-like music of "Le Gladiator"
will make it an attraction.

It uses folding cardboard music books, a large supply of which are
with it. These can be stored on a convenient shelf under the instrument.
As the book passes over the key frame tiny metal fingers protrude
through the holes in the book and cause the designated notes to sound.
When sounding each note is repealing or vibrating constantly ­
producing a continuous mandolin-like effect. The instrument contains
wound piano strings for the bass notes and steel strings for the treble.
Measurements are 2'8" high, 2'11" wide, and 1'6" deep. To operate
properly Le Gladiator will need adjustment and regulation of the key
frame and striking mechanism and recovering of the feed rollers which
pull the music book through the frame. The case is of light walnut and
could profitably use some wood filling and refinishing.
An instrument of similar nature but of different make is one of the
permanent attractions to be seen and heard at Frank Holland's British
Piano Museum in London. It is quite musical and interesting.

UPRIGHT MECHANICAL DULCIMER
This is one of the earliest collectible mechanical musical instruments.
Dating from the early 19th century, such mechanical dulcimers were
popular in American and European homes more thana hundred years
ago.
Open anc closed views of the upright mechanical dulcimer. This was
the latest in home entertainment during Civil War days!
The operating principle of this mechanical dulcimer is simple and is
quite like the common barrel piano. As the pinned wooden cylinder
turns the projections cause the piano hammer, (which are made of
wood for a brilliant tone) to lift back and then fall against the st.rings.
The barrel contains a number of different tunes of interesting variety.
There are 22 hammers, each of which strikes two piano strings.
Measurement.s of the mechanical dulcimer are: 3' high, 1'4" wide,
and 1'1" deep. It works well with an easy action. Even a young child
can play it' It sounds nice and has a charming street piano-like tone.

AMORETTE 16-KEY ORGAN
This small and compact Amorette table·top size reed organ uses 8
7/8" metal discs, a half dozen of which go with it. It plays nicely with a
pleasant tone and, for its size, a generous volume of sound.
Measurements are 14" wide, 10" deep, and 8" high. It was made
circa 1895 and was a popular home entertainment instrument in

CHOICE ARISTON DISC ORGAN
The Ariston, popular in the decade from about 1895 to 1905, is a
table top size hand cranked reed organ which has its music programmed
on a 13" diameter stiff cardboard disc. The disc is "read" by a series of
metal keys. Measurements of the Ariston are 16" square and 9" high. It
is in choice unrestored condition and will require the regular pneumatIc
rebuilding. With it are a half dozen discs, and others are available

MANOPAN PAPER STRIP ORGAN
The Manopan paper strip organ is one of the more finely built items
of its kind. Manufactured about 1895 it is a compact table top size reed
organ measuring 11" high, 1'10" wide, and 1'3" deep.
As the front crank is turned a paper strip is pulled over a
spring.loaded key frame. Each time one of the tiny metal keys pops up
through an aperture in the sturdy cardboard music strip a desired note

plays. The music itself is furnished by a series of tuned metal reeds
connected to the key frame via a linkage. The reeds are sounded by
vacuum provided by a bellows which is connected to the main crank.
This unit plays but could use refinishing and cleaning of the key
frame part. With a music strip this attractive Manopan can be yours for

ENGLISH BARREL ORGAN
This pretty little barrel organ was probably made in England circa
1850. Jt uses a multi-tune pinned wooden barrel to play two ranks of
pipes. The first rank is of metal string-toned pipes and the second, of
stopped wooden flutes.
The instrument was rebuilt several years ago. As it was slated for use
in a public exhibit a small electric motor was added. Fortunately, this
did not replace any of the mechanisms, it is simply an auxiliary unit.
The organ can still be operated in the normal way: i.e., with the hand
crank on the front.
The next owner may wish to remove the electrical mechanisms. A
new lid (a simple wooden rectangle) will have to be made. Otehrwise,
little is necessary.
Measurements are 2'6" high, 1'8" wide, and l' deep. Very

BEAUTIFUL BARREL ORGAN
With several ranks of pipes
This is an outstanding example of an indoor-type barrel organ,
probably made for use in a fine parlor. Sold on April 5, 1851 by the
Pianoforte, Harp, and Music Warehouse (according to the original label
which is still on the inside), it undoubtedly saw service for many years
in a fine home. It has rather extensive pipework - more pipes than are
usually found in an instrument of this type - consisting of three ranks
of metal string-toned pipes and one rank of stopped wooden flutes. The
tunes are programmed on wooden barrels of ten tunes per barrel. The
two barrels originally sold with it are still with it now. A concealed
storage space for the barrels is in the bottom of the organ.
This attractive instrument measures 4'7" high, 2'1" wide, and 1'9"
deep. It will require very little in the way of casework (a small plain
wooden panel about 9" square is missing). The interior will need a
regular pneumatic rebuilding (we'll gladly quote you an estimate for
doing the work here, if desired), as would any organ of this era.
The instrument is really a very choice one inside and out. It was well
made and beautifully proportioned. Buy this fine instrument for just

ANIMATED MUSICAL GRANDFATHER'S CLOCK
With automaton figures
This attractive clock dates from the mid 19th century and was
probably made in the Black Forest. The upper part of the clock
displays. a colorful oil painting of a Swiss lake with a backdrop of
mountam5. In the lower center of the painting is the clock face.
Above the scene is an animated stage containing five mechanical
figures, each delicately made in the form of a musician with French
horn, piccolo, etc. As the music plays the figures move. The musical
movement consists of a rank of flute pipes operated from a pinned
barrel. A variety of different tunes is programmed on it.
The instrument is unrestored, but is in fine restorable condition. The
musical movement is simple and will be easy to rebuild - even for the
beginner (or, we can do it for you). There are two small wooden panels
at each side of the case missing. In addition, the top back panel and lid,
both of which are simple wooden rectangles, are gone. An estimated
$25 to $50 will be what we'll charge to expertly replace them. The
mechanism provides stations for four additional figures, although
whether or not the clock ever had them cannot now be ascertained. If
you wish to add some small dolls or figures, there is provision for it.
The clock is attractive and impressive and stands 7'9" high. It is 2'2"
wide and 1'5" deep. [t combines a fine grandfather's clock with a
melodious musical movement plus an automated scene. For the
museum or private home this wiU be a great addition.

RESTORED SEEBURG STYLE C NICKELODEON
With beautiful art glass front!
Over the years we have handled dozens of Seeburg nickelodeon
pianos of all kinds. Among our very favorites have been the Style CArt
pianos. Unfortunately, these stunningly beautiful instruments are not
common. Most surviving Seeburg keyboard "A" roJ] pianos are the later
styles with plainer fronts.
This Style C is from the famous Nevada Collection purchased intact
by us. The instrument has been rebuilt and plays beautifully. It is ready
to move into your home or museum and start entertaining you!
Measurements are 4'9" high, 5'6" wide, and 2'5" deep. The case is of
light quartered oak with an attractively patterned grain. The instrument
is coin operated by means of a nickel slot at the upper right side. Like
other Seeburgs of this type, a control is provided for loud or soft
playing and for mandolin on or off. Or, if you are like most collectors,

these controls and the automatic controls actuated by special

SEEBURG STYLE C NICKELODEON PlANO
With spectacular art glass front!
This beautiful Seeburg nickelodeon piano consists of a good quality
upright piano with automatic mandolin attachment. It uses the
standard type"A" nickelodeon piano roll. One ten-tune roll goes free
with it, and as many others as you want are available for low cost.
The art glass front of the Seeburg Style C "Art"piano is simply
spectacular! It portrays a snow white swan on an emerald green
pond surrounded by a luxuriant forest with colorful flowers,
multihued trees, and an azure sky! The art glass scene measures
nearl)' five feet wide and, by itself, is nearly worth the price of the
piano! You'U be thrilled by it!

Evidently Seeburg had extensive plans for the P-G-A for it took the
step of mentioning the P-G-A on the labels of certain"A" rolls sold by
its subsidiary, the Automatic Music Roll Co. about this time. What
went wrong with these plans we don't know. We do know that few
P-G-A nickelodeons were made and, to our knowledge, just this one
specimen survives today. This identical instrument is pictured on page
87 of "A Guidebook of Automatic Musical Instruments."
The P-G-A is compact and well built. A number of years ago it was
rebuilt, but it plays weakly today, so tightening of the chests and
possibly some supplementary rebuilding are indicated. The rebuilding
was a nice job, so this will save you perhaps 800/0 of the work normally
needed.
The roll frame is conveniently located at the center top. It is easily
accessible by simply tilting down the hinged front art glass panel. The
roll plays the piano and automatically operates the mandolin
attachment and the piano expression controls.
The case of the P-G-A is of mahogany ornamented with a large
multicolored art glass panel on the front. The coin slot is located just
around the upper corner on the left side of the cabinet. Some slight
touchup work is all that is needed to have the cabinet appear sparkling.
Measurements are 4'9" high, 3'4" wide, and 2' deep.
Except for the telltale art glass front (which is illuminated from
behind when the instrument plays) the P-G-A looks more like a piece of
furniture than a nickelodeon. As such, it might find its ideal next home
in the residence of one of our readers.
Our catalogues have offered virtually the entire range of Seeburg
instruments from the small Style L to the rather sizable Style H, but
never have we offered a P-G-A. Hence, it is a real pleasure to offer one
now. Here, truly, is an opportunity that may never again be repeated.

SEEBURG STYLE E WITH PIPES
In beautiful case
In its light quartered oak case with rich grain patterns this Seeburg
Style E piano with violin pipes is very attractive. Dating from shortly
after 1920, it has the 1920's type of art glass with clear glass interstices.
This provides an effective combination of a beautiful art glass scene of
forested slopes with a "sky" of clear glass - through which the violin
pipes and piano action may be seen.

We are not sure whether this instrument was originally a Seeburg E
with xylophone or whether it had the violin pipes as it does now.
Perhaps this makes no difference, as the interior parts: chests, controls,
pneumatic stack, combination wind and vacuum pump (necessary for
operating the pipes), and most, if not all, of the other parts are Seeburg
components. We are prompted to make this observation by: (1)
noticing some screwholes on the inside of the case in the position in
which a xylophone may have been mounted, and (2) by the fact that
during the 1920's this particular case style usually accommodated the
xylophone as the extra unit. This was because a system with pipes
would have been more intricate and costly. A xylophone requires only
vacuum, and the same pump that provides vacuum for the piano part
and controls is sufficient for the xylophone also. On the other hand, a
rank of pipes requires pressure - so a separate pressure source, usually a
combination vacuum/pressure pump of special design - is necessary.
Seeburg did, however, make Style E coin pianos with violin pipes;
however, these were of different case styling and art glass format and
were produced in the pre-1920 years when competition was less intense
and economy was not so great of a consideration. All of this discussion
is perhaps unnecessary, as the instrument is attractive, does have
Seeburg components, and, when rebuilt, will play nicely. However,
trivial details have always interested us, and this particular piano ­
although purchased by us as a regular Seeburg violin piano - aroused
our curiosity. Perhaps one of our readers can elucidate further on the
matter.
The instrument has been rebuilt in the past, but it now plays only
feebly. A complete restoration is not necessary, nor is it recommended
even if cost may not be a factor with you. Rather, a partial rebuilding
of selected components combined with some regulation and adjustment
work is all you need. The exterior of the case is choice and will require
no attention. The art glass is likewise choice, bright, and in excellent
condition.
The Style E uses regular type "A" coin piano rolls which provide the
capability to operate the piano (with soft pedal and sustaining pedal),
the mandolin attachment, and the rank of violin pipes. With it goes one
10-tune rolls. Others are available cheaply.
An attractive, well built, and choice Seeburg nickelodeon piano!

BEAUTIFULLY REBUILT SEEBURG K
With piano, mandolin and xylophone.
The Seeburg Style K, or the "Seeburg Eagle" as collectors sometimes
call it, is perhaps the typical American nickelodeon of the 1920's. The
Style K was made in large numbers - probably in the thousands - and
several dozen survive today.
Back in 1925 Seeburg described the Style K as follows:
"STYLE K - "Midget Orchestrion." Piano, mandolin, and
xylophone. Fancy and effective. Beautiful case design 61-note scale of
exceptional tone quality.
"Double veneered hardwood case, finished in silver grey, gold
trimmings, or in regular mission oak. Attractive art glass, electrically
illuminated from within... Automatic loud and soft control; mandolin
and xylophone 'off and on' controls. Uses Style 'A' ten selection music
roll with famous Seeburg rewind system.

The Regina specialist wiD find this offering to be of special interest.
We present an example of the rare Reginapiano - Regina's entry into
the nickelodeon piano field. This is the only Reginapiano we have ever
seen. Perhaps others exist. If so, they have escaped our attention. It is
certain that Regina sold a number of these during the 1905 . 1910
period. The "Reginapiano" notation appeared on the Regina Music Box
Co. letterhead during that time.
Basically, the instnunent is a Cremona Style 3 coin piano. It was
manufactured in Chicago by the :vIarquette Piano Co. for Regina. The
"Regina" name appears on the instrument in many places, and is even
cast into the piano plate. No mention of the "Cremona" origin appears
as years ago Regina wanted to give the impression that the pianos were
manufactured in Regina's Rahway, N.J. plant.
Measurements are 4'8" high, 5'5" wide, and 2'5" deep. The case is of
quartered oak. It wiD require refinishing to make it look like new. The
interior of the instrument will require the customary pneumatic
rebuilding - as would any nickelodeon of this era. The Regina
trademarks and the designs (music lyres and a singing canary) on the
beveled glass are all in excellent condition and can be preserved.
The instrument uses the standard type "A" ten tune nickelodeon
rolls. One goes free with it, and as many others as you would like are
available at low extra cost.
If you are a music box collector and don't yet have a nickelodeon
piano, then this Reginapiano will be a smooth transition for you! The
Reginapiano (nee Cremona) is well built and, when restored, will play
lots of nice listenable music!

CAPITOL COIN PIANO WITH VIOLIN PIPES
In beautiful case
This lovely Capitol coin operated nickelodeon piano has a mandolin
attachment and a large section of violin pipes composed of two rows
with 14 pipes in each row.
The instrument uses the standard ten·tune "A" roU, one of which is
furnished with it. Many other roUs are available at low cost. Virtually
any ·tune of the 1910 . 1935 era can be found on A rolls, so there is an
opportunity for lots of nostalgic listening!
The Capitol Piano and Organ Co. was incorporated around 1920. The
Rand Company (succesoor to the North Tonawanda Musical Instrument
Works) owned 510/0 of the capital stock. William Getz and Sam
Kissberg, former salesmen with the Rudolph Wurlitzer Co., owned 490/0.

was ever written by a manufacturer or distributor we have yet to read
it!
Although Paganini instruments were once found in many
establishments across America and Europe, they are rare today.
Originally, they were not plentiful. The Paganinis were expensive due to
the great time and expertise needed to make them. Prices STARTED at
$3,500.00 for the simplest model - a style with just ONE rank of
pipes!
Today we know of the following Paganini instruments that still
survive. All are in the hands of those who appreciate them, we are
happy to say. The roster, to the best of our knowledge, is as follows:
1. Style 3 with keyboard; the specimen we now offer for sale.
2. Style 3 with keyboard; specimen in one of America's leading
private collections.
3. Style 3 with keyboard; specimen in the private collection of Mr.
Christopher Ross of Victoria, B.C., Canada. This Paganini was
personally selected by Mr. Ross' grandfather when he visited the
Philipps factory in 1928. It is now being restored to its former musical
glory.
4. Style 3 with keyboard; specimen in a museum due to open soon in
Germany. A public announcement of this has not yet been made, so it
would be premature to make it here. In the museum it will be a central
attraction illustrating sophistication in the making of automatic musical
instruments.
5. Style 3 with keyboard; specimen in the home of Terry Hathaway,
a director of our firm - the instrument which has made us so
enthusiastic about the Paganini!

6. Style 3 keyboardless; specimen in one of America's leading private
collections.
7. Style 0-14 keyboardless; specimen in the government owned
musical museum in Utrecht, Holland.
To our knowledge, none of the others on this list is for sale or is
about to be for sale in the foreseeable future. Hence, the opportunity
presented now may be the last chance to acquire a Paganini for a long,
long time!
The instrument we offer is in choice unrestored condition. It is a
large and beautiful specimen that will be admired wherever it is
displayed. Measurements are: 9'1" high (with decorative top gallery in
place), 5'7" wide, and 3' deep. It disassembles into two parts, top and

Although the Paganini would certainly be a top attraction in a
musical museum (no public musical museum in America has one), it
would find, perhaps, an ideal home in a fine residence. The music of the
Paganini is soft, mellow, and pleasing. It is at its best when playing
classical music. If you are the owner of a finely built and finely restored
and regulated reproducing piano, then you will be able to appreciate
the Paganini to its fullest extent. It is truly a marvelous musical

WURLITZER STYLE BX ORCHESTRION
With Automatic Roll Changer
This Style BX is a lovely example of a classic Wurlitzer keyboard
orchestrion. Manufactured during the World War I era, this orchestrion
contains a piano, mandolin attachment, a large rank of violin pipes, a
bass drum, a snare drum and a triangle.
It uses regular Wurlitzer Automatic Player Piano rolls and is equipped
with the famous Wurlitzer Automatic Roll Changer. This device holds
six 5-tune rolls and changes them automatically. In this way, the roll of
your choice can be selected via an indexing knob at the left side of the
case, or, left to play continuously or by repeated dropping of nickels in
the slot, the orchestrion will play each roll through, one after the other.
In this way a program of 30 different tunes without repetition awaits
the listener.
Front and rear views of the Wurlitzer BX orchestrion. This
instrument has been carefully restored (a nice quality job) and is
ready to take its place in your musical exhibit. The colorful art glass
fronted BX will enable you to relive the wonderful age of ragtime,
two steps, and other nostalgic music in a really meaningful way!

With this BX orchestrion we shall give a complete changer full of
rolls. Extra rolls are available in recut form from The Player Piano Co.,
620 E. Douglas, Wichita, Kansas. At one time nearly every new tune
written was cut on a Wurlitzer Automatic Player Piano roll, so the
variety of music is nearly endless!
This Style BX orchestrion measures 6'10" high, 5'2" wide, and 2'8"
deep. It is in a quartered oak finish highlighted by large and colorful art
glaSli panels on the front. The Automatic Roll Changer is visible as it
operates behind a beveled clear glass panel.
The exterior of the case is attractive. The interior was pneumatically
rebuilt by our staff and suppliers and is operating nicely. We sold this
instrument a year ago into the Nevada Collection and, now with the
purchase of that collection intact, are pleased to be able to offer it
again! We are sure it wiu please its new owner as much as it pleased its
last one.

majestic!
BEAUTIFUL LINK/MARCOLA ORCHESTRION
Cabinet style with beautiful art glass
This Link/Marcola orchestrion is interesting, impressive, and
beautiful! It is housed in a large ornate case and measures 6'10" high,
5'2" wide, and 2'9" deep. The front is ornamented by two large and
colorful art glass panels depicting houses, bright green trees, and azure
skies. Affixed to the upper front are two hanging art glass lamps (not
shown in our pictures), one of which needs repair.
Instnunentation of this beautiful piece consists of a piano with
expression controls, a mandolin attachment, and a rank of wooden
flute pipes. The orchestrion is a product of the Automatic Orchestra
Co. of Detroit, Michigan. That firm, which operated in the 'teens and
'twenties, purchased the complete orchestrion chassis including the
piano, pipes, etc. from the Link Piano and Organ Co. of Binghamton,
New York (earlier, the Automatic Musical Co. of the same city).
Around the Link chassis the Automatic Orchestra Company built a
large, ornate, and lovely orchestrion case.
The Automatic Orchestra Co., owned by Mr. Marquette, sold its
products under the "Marcola" trademark.
This colorful orchestrion uses the regular and easily available Link
RX rolls, three of which go with it. Extras are available at low cost.
These rolls encompass a wide variety of old-time popular favorites and
are enjoyable to listen to. Advanced collectors consider Link
nickelodeon and orchestrion music to be among the best arranged in
the business.

CHOICE WEBER XYLOPHONE PIANO
The wonderful Grandezza model
This Weber Grandezza is, case-wise, the twin brother of the one listed
and sold from page 34 of our Catalogue No.8 (it seems like many years
ago when we "Tote that - so much has happened since then!).
Instrumentation consists of a superb quality piano with sophisticated
expression controls, a large and melodious xylophone, and a mandolin
attachment. The case measures 6'2" high, 5'4" wide, and 3' deep. It is
of light golden oak and is well preserved. Refinishing will not be
necessary.
This Grandezza is in choice unrestored condition and is a survivor of
a small group we purchased a few years ago. You would have to look at
ten other Grandezzas (you'll never find that many to look at!) to find
another this nice!
This Grandezza is excellently preserved throughout. As a xylophone
piano with realistic human-like expression the Grandezza has no peer. It
is superb. The day is here when really choice Grandezzas are hard to
find. And the day is coming soon when even poorly preserved ones will
be difficult to locate!

ATTRACTIVE IMHOF & :vIUKLE ORCHESTRION
With display orchestra bells...
This lovely Imhof & Mukle orchestrion was originally built about
1907. It was sold by E. Boeker of New York City, and may have been
one of the many ex-Boeker instruments that entertained passengers on
the Hudson River steamboats plying their way from New York and
points north to Albany.
The Boeker firm went out of business in 1914, whereupon Mr.
Boeker moved to California. Accompanying him were several boxcars
full of Imhof & Mulde orchestrions! This adventure is a story in itself
and perhaps in some future issue we can devote the proper space to it.
The Imhof & Mukle orchestrion offered here is a fairly compact one,
as these large pieces go. It measures 7'9" high without the top gallery,
or 8'9" with the ornate top finial in place. It is 5'6" wide and 3'4"
deep.
The instrumentation consists of a piano, mandolin, two ranks of
pipes (divided into four rows), and drum and trap effects. Highlighting
the front of the orchestrion is a fully displayed bell lyre or glockenspiel
which plays automatically by means of pneumatically actuated strikers
on the back side. At one time glockenspiels of this type were used on
the orchestrions of many different makers, but time has been unkind to
these musical monoliths, with the result that the only other surviving
orchestrion with a display glockenspiel we know of is the Style 17
Wurlitzer PianOrchestra in the fabulous private collection of Jerry
Cohen.

HOME MODEL VIOLANO VIRTUOSO
A lovely specimen!
This is a choice unrestored example of the beautiful, popular, and all
too rare Home Model Violano Virtuoso. Manufactured around 1915 it
bears the serial number 232.

example of a rare, rare instrument! Telephone us COLLECT to reserve

The Home Model is built into an elegant mahogany cabinet. As the
name implies, it was intended for use in the home. The particular
specimen we offer was used in later years in a public place as a coin slot
has been inexpertly affixed to it (this should be removed by its next
owner; or at least a better looking one should be put in its stead).
Around 1912 - 1915 there were two main models of the Violano ­
Virtuoso: the "Home Model" such as the one we offer here, and the
curved front "CQmmercial ModeJ." Both types were made in limited
numbers compared to the later rectangular case styles and, as a result,
both types are rare today. We know of a number of advanced
collections that have either a Home or a Commercial model, but we
know of no collection having both.
This instrument measures 5'5" high, 4'1" wide, and 2',9" deep. It has
a mahogany case with fluted columns at each side of the front.
BasicaUy the case is sounq, and all that will be required will be
refinishing (plus the recommended removal of the coin slot and a smaU
external" lock on the bottom doors). At each side of the case is a
beveled glass window. To our knowledge, home models did not have
these originally. We surmise that these windows, strategically placed in
order to see the violin better from either side, were installed long ago,
perhaps shortly after the instrument was made. As the windows are
installed neatly and with their bevelling look quite contemporary it
would be our suggestion to leave them there. In fact, they make the
instrument look even more attractive!
The internal mechanisms will need the customary cleaning and
checking out of the parts. There appear to be no major problems, so the
work should be interesting. Or, we can do it for you in our rebuilding
department for low cost.
With the Violano are three 5-tune rolls. This is a very choice and very
pretty Violano, and we are sure you'll be really proud of it! We

FISCHER AMPICO STYLE "A" GRAND
If you are seeking an inexpensive, yet choice rebuildable, Ampico
grand piano then this Fischer rna) be ideal.
It is a 5'2" grand manufactured in 1922. It has the conventional
Style A Ampico mechanism. The Ampico drawer slides out from
beneath the keyboard to permit changing of rolls. When not in use the
Ampico mechanism is out of sight. As is the case with any type of
reproducing mechanism, the Ampico does not interfere with the normal
piano action or touch in the event that you want to play it by hand. In
fact, if you wish, you can even accompany the artists' rolls as they
play'
The pneumatic components of this Fischer Ampico will need the
usual rebuilding. They are in excelle.nt restorable condition. The case is
of mahogany and has checked varnish. It will definitely need
refinishing. Several lighter colored plaques add interest to the cabinet
work. The refinishing, incidentally, is something that you can do using
materials purchaseable at any hardware store. The supplies for
pneumatic rebuilding will cost you less than 8100. "Rebuilding the

ART STYLE FISCHER AMPICO GRAND
Spanish Renaissance case styling
"Art" case reproducing grands are rare. This is a nice on,,'
If you've been searchulg for a reproducing plano that is an elegant
piece of furniture as well, then consider this lovely Fischer Style A
Ampico. It is in a case of Spanish Renaissance design with matching
bench. The finish is in excellent condition and is the original two-tone
hand rubbed mahogany with gold trim on the legs and on the frieze
around the bottom of the piano case and bench.
The instrtunent is of 5'2" length and dates from 1925. It contains
the Style A Ampico drawer which slides out from underneath the
keyboard when you want to change rolls. Controls permit you to play
the roll through and then have it stop, or have the roll repeat.

(up to 30 minutes)..."

WILCOX & WHITE "SYMPHONY" PLAYER ORGAN
Circa 1895 Wilcox & White player reed organ. This instrument uses
the regular Wilcox & 'White Symphony rolls for automatic playing, or it
can be played by hand in the regular maruler.
The case is of attractive walnut and measures 5' high, 4'8" wide, and
2'2" deep. Some minor regluing of the front fretwork is needed, but
apart from this trivial matter thc case is excellent. The pneumatic
portion will need the usual rebuilding. The organ is simply
constructed, so rebuilding will be easy. All supplies are available
cheaply.
The organ has 16 draw stops, including those for controls. The
volume may be varied by means of a knee-operated swell. A
paddle.type tremolo introduces a vibrato effect into the music as
desired.
Wilcox & White of Meriden, Connecticut, was one of the leading
manufacturers of automatic musical instruments in the early days. The
peak of their output was in the late 19th'and very early 20th centuries.
In addition to the Symphony player organs they manufactured the well
known Angelus push-up piano players and, later, player pianos. The
Angelus Artrio reproducing piano was a product of this firm.

DECAP ORCHESTRION/ORG;AN IN CLASSIC CASE
With richly carved and ornamented front...
This lovely orchestrion was manufactured by Decap Brothers of
Antwerp, Belgium several decades ago. With its classic and beautiful
front is resembles the large piano orchestrions of the 'twenties. The
instrumentation consists of many ranks of pipes (the interior is,
literally, crammed with them) ranging from small scale flutes to large
bass pipes. An interesting rank is the metaUophone . - small flute pipes
with metal diaphraghm resonators.
Adding to the musical output of the pipes are the trap effects of a
large bass drum, a snare drum, a cymbal, and a triangle.
The instrument was designed to use Decap orchestrion rolls - but
considering the similarity of the tracker bar and considering the
excellent music available on Arburo rolls - we would recommend
converting it to use the Arburo selections. This can be done simply by
re·arranging the tubing. We'll furnish you with a copy of our Jazz
Orchestra instruction manual so you'll have the correct layout and
other information.
This Decap orchestrion is unrestored but in immaculate condition. It
will be a true pleasure to work on. Refinishing of the case wiu not be
necessary. Count on having to re-do the cloth and leather parts, but if
past instruments we've worked on are any indication, this is more
optional than necessary. As is the case with any instrument you ever
purchase from us, we'll happily recommend sources of materials,
provide restoration advice (or we can do it here), or help you in any

An old-timer among phonograph dealers, a gentlemen 'who has been
pursuing the lure of the wax cylinder for some twenty years, picked
this specimen as the finest Edison Opera model he found during that
time. The instrument is in choice original condition complete with the
wooden horn and the top cover (not shown in our photograph). The
Opera was well cared for originally and is in excellent playing condition

The Opera is the elite of the Edison phonographs. Unlike most other
models the reproducer arm does not move. Rather, the mandrel and
cylinder are moved beneath the fixed-position reproducer and tone
arm. The Opera was the top Edison phonograph of its type. It sold for a
substantial premium originally, with the result that production was
limited.

EDISON ECLIPSE COIN PHONOGRAPH
The Edison Eclipse is one of the rarer early 20th century coin
operated cylinder phonographs. Powered by a small electric motor,
these instruments were operated by a nickel and used regular 2-minute
wax cylinders. To help entice nickels into the slot the phonograph
works are visible from the top, front, and both sides through windows
of beveled glass.
The cabinet is of attractive quartered oak with a carved lyre
ornament on the front center. The Eclipse has been refinished and
reconditioned throughout, so the next owner will have nothing to do to
it - except fiji its coin box with nickels!
Instruments such as this were once used in phonograph parlors - an
interesting type of business that flourished from about 1890 to 1905.
These were rooms or galleries containing sometimes dozens of coin
operated phonographs lined up in rows. To prevent uller acoustic
confusion, many Eclipses were equipped with individual earphones
(rather than a horn like the one we offer). Often the phonograph parlor
offered the patron a chance to try his luck on a Mills Dewey or Caille
Roulette gambling machine or, perhaps, the chance to see the flickering
pictures of a Mutoscope was more appealing.

WURLITZER Solo Violin Piano
QUESTION: In reading "Player Piano Treasury" I notice on page
102 the description of the Wurlitzer Flute or Violin Piano. According
to the Wurlitzer advertisement shown there the Style AX is available
with the basic piano plus a mandolin attachment and "violin effects."
On the next page in "Player Piano Treasury" there appears a
description of the Wurlitzer Solo Violin Piano. Except for the fact that
the Solo Violin Piano apparently doesn't have a mandolin attachment,
what is the difference between the two instruments?
ANSWER: Both are very different musically from each other and
each has a different construction.
The Style AX Violin Piano is a basic Wurlitzer 65-note Automatic
Player Piano with a rank of violin pipes added. These pipes, 38 in
number, are housed in a chamber built behind the piano sounding
board. The AX (or Style A if it has the long roll frame rather than the
changer) uses the conventional Wurlitzer Automatic Player Piano roll.
This type of roll provides that the 38 violin pipes will turn on or off as
desired. When playing the pipes play the same notes as the top 38 notes
in the piano scale (the pipes play the same notes at the same time that
the piano is playing them). This, incidentally, is the way that most
standard types of "nickelodeon" rolls are made - the standard "A",
"G", etc. roUs having basically the same principle of layout.
The Solo Violin Piano is an entirely different breed of cat. The
purpose of this instrument was to render soulfully played music with
expression. It was more of a "serious music" type of piano than was the
AX.
The piano part of the AX has expression provided by a soft pedal
and a sustaining pedal. Apart from the tonal differences imparted by
these the AX plays with the same quality and intensity all the time. The
Solo Violin Piano, on the other hand, has elaborate Welte-inspired
(Wurlitzer used the Welte expression mechanisms under a licensing
agreement and, in fact, even built pianos for the Welte facility at
Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) expression devices incorporated into the piano.
This pennits the instrument to be played with more "humanness" or
"feeling" than the AX. The violin pipes of the Solo Violin Piano are 51
in number and are housed in a chamber behind the piano sounding
board. Louvered swell shutters operate with two aperture positions.
This pennits the violin pipes to be: (1) very soft, when the shutters are
completely closed; (2) of medium softness, when tile shutters are open
just slightly; and (3) of "full organ" loudness when the shutters are
open all the way.
The main distinction of the Solo Violin Piano, however, is that the
51 violin pipes are controlled by their own separate perforations
completely different from the perforations which operate the piano
notes. So, rather than having to play the exact same notes as the piano
does at the same time the piano does, the Solo Violin Piano's pipes can
play entirely different notes! The pipes can play solo with the piano as
accompaniment, the piano can play solo with the pipes accompanying,
or either the piano or violin can play alone. This versatility made the
Solo Violin Piano ideal for playing elaborate musical passages.
The Solo Violin Piano was advertised as having "all the expression
and accent necessary to play the best classical music." In the 1920's
coin operated pianos featuring classical music were not as popular as
the more ornate mirrored or art glass fronted "nickelodeons" that
played popular tunes· and for this reason the Solo Violin Piano was not
a success in the marketplace. Only a few survive today.
