News From Teakwood Village Main Office
By Lori Fliger
_____________________________________________________________________
Happy Ground Hog Day! Happy Valentine’s Day! And Happy February! As
promised I am addressing the Rules and Regulations in each month’s newsletter.
This month we will address parking. Many of you have guests who are
visiting you this winter and we need to make sure, for all residents, that we are parking
correctly. All residents must park in their own carport. You must be able to fit all your
personal vehicles in said carport as Teakwood does not have parking for excess resident
vehicles. Your guests may come to the main office and get a parking pass that will allow
them to park in guest parking for the duration of their stay, which of course would be
in compliance with the Rules and Regulations on guests. Remember, there is no street
parking nor is parking on the grass/lot allowed. We need to keep our streets clear for
maintenance, emergency and safety purposes. Also, should you be having a delivery,
the delivery vehicle is allowed to park on the street for the delivery only. Make sure that
all vehicles do not restrict your neighbor from entering or exiting their carport, restrict
Thank You, Thank You From Jim Flanary
_____________________________________________________________________
I
would like to thank everyone for all the cards, phone calls, prayers, and food you sent
during and after my recent heart attack. Betty and I have many wonderful friends
here in Teakwood, and your kindness was truly appreciated. Again, many thanks!
New Year’s Eve Party
_____________________________________________________________________
Jerry Chase did another great job as the entertainer
at our dance. He was so good that everyone was
still dancing past midnight. Appetizers were put
out at 9:00 p.m. and a bottle of champagne was on
each table at 10:00 p.m.
A very special thanks to June Davidson and
Monique Benfield who are the best help in the world.
Because I was running to the hospital and doctors with
Jim, Monique stepped in and aided Claire, making our
job a lot easier. We also can’t forget Natalie and Will
Kleinmeyer for setting the tables so well.
A Special Thank You
_____________________________________________________________________
This past year Ronnie Kierstead’s mother took ill and we took over as Social Directors.
We had a lot of fun and a few complaints; however, all in all, it wasn’t too
bad. So many people aided us and we want to thank them all, again and again.
So once more, thank you all for the help you have given us and Teakwood East, Betty
Flanary and Claire Kanan.
Love is a game that two can play and both win.
States, but it doesn’t have to be. American Heart Month seeks to increase public knowledge
of cardiovascular diseases, raise funds for research, and prevent heart disease by
Young At Heart News
Submitted by Barb Wautlet
_____________________________________________________________________
There has been a flurry of activity in
the past few months. We provided the
snacks for the Halloween party at Florida
First Start School. (Not candy, however, the
teachers don’t approve of sugar treats for the
little ones.) We also bought treats for the
Christmas party, (applesauce, string cheese,
homemade Christmas cookies, and juice) and
Renee Ouellette acted as the photographer,
taking family pictures with Santa and giving
them to each family.
A generous donor gave us her Schwinn bicycle and we sold it on Craig’s List for
$175.00. The Memorial Heart Tree generated just under $2,200 from donations this
year. We adopted twenty children for Christmas, shopped for them, and delivered the
gift bags to Florida First Start.
We donated $2,850 to Mildred Helms Elementary School to adopt nineteen classrooms.
Each teacher is given $150 to buy a needed “extra” for the benefit of his/her
students.
Joan, Aggie, Gail and I spent an afternoon cutting cute figures and alphabet letters
from felt, foam and sponge to reinforce the storybooks for the children.
And so, we continue to be good stewards of your money, holding fast to our Mission
Statement to enrich the educational and social needs of the children in the Largo area.
Christmas Decorations
_____________________________________________________________________
John and Monique Benfield would like to thank those who helped take down the
Christmas decorations both inside and outside both Halls. The crew of June and
Earl Davidson, Sheila and Robert Leach, Darla and Jim MacDonald, Karolin Clipperton
and Mona and Harley Thompson took everything down and stowed it all away
in a flash. Their help was invaluable and they were a pleasure to work with!
I can’t imagine a person becoming a success who doesn’t give this game of life
everything he’s got. —Walter Cronkite
A Note From Betty and Claire
_____________________________________________________________________
We hope that everyone had a very merry Christmas at our Christmas dinner!
The dinner (for those of you who missed out) included a bottle of wine on
every table, a main course of ham with raisin sauce, scalloped potatoes, carrots,
cauliflower and apple pie for dessert.
We would like to thank Pauli and Betty Woods, Marie DeRee, Natalie and Will
Kleinmeyer, Sue Dietz, John and Monique Benfield, and Larry Kanan for all their help
with the dinner. Also, a thanks goes out to Chris Barnes who was our MC and also sang
a few Christmas carols.
The Most Valued Possessions Lie Within
____________________________________________________________________
A
young boy sought enlightenment from a wise monk who practiced pottery making.
One sunny afternoon after many years of study and meditation, the boy
was admiring one of the monk’s prized pots when it slipped from his hands and
broke into many tiny pieces.
The boy apologized profusely. But the monk remained calm. “You need not be
sad,” he said with a gentle smile. “It is still within me.”
The wise monk’s true pleasure came through the process of creating and shaping
the pot, not in owning it afterward. His joy was not in the destination, but in the journey.
RCS Food Pantry From Yvette Mularz
_____________________________________________________________________
Two weeks ago, the food donations we received only totaled twenty-seven pounds,
which doesn’t speak well for the cause. There are so many people who have little
and need help; and we, fortunately, have relatively so much. So I made a call to
all of you to please try to do better in the future. I am so happy that it worked. This
past week, the donations totaled 152 pounds! What a great difference! (Thirty pounds
of that total came from the estate of Pat Leonard.)
We never stop collecting so please help to keep the box brimming with staples.
You can bring any donations to my house (589 Blue Bird) or bring them with you
to coffee or bingo.
Again, a huge THANK YOU to all who donated and a “thank you” to those who
will read this and make this coming week a huge success.
How To Avoid Running Short of Newsletters
_____________________________________________________________________
As we proceed through the year circulation needs will change with the current population
in your park. We will need your help to keep us abreast of these changes and to avoid
your running short or printing extra books which aren’t needed. It helps us to know your
needs before you send in your copy (by 10th of each month) since we must print a part of your
publication in advance of your copy deadlines.
If you will require more or less copies for next month’s issue, please call Monthly Media
by the 10th of this month at 585-7388. Do not email or send note with your copy. Thank you.
O.C.
(Otha Crawford Hansford)
By Renee Ouellette
_____________________________________________________________________
Born in Stephens, Georgia in
1923, Otha, more affectionately
known as O.C., grew
up in Union Point, Georgia. As I sat
and listened to this “tall” Southern
gentleman tell me his life story, I
became captivated. His home at
693 Red Wing Circle, on the banks
of Lake Tiki, is a treasure chest of
collectables from the travels he and his late wife Betty have enjoyed over the years.
O.C. informed me that they have traveled to every one of the United States, except Hawaii,
and every Province in Canada, and he has a picture or a souvenir to prove it. He
has had several different careers over his life time, most notably that of a lineman for
the Schulman Electric Company and Southeast Utilities moving power lines across the
country. After working the “lines” O.C. looked for new opportunities and found them
in the flooring business. He owned and operated his own company, named Dustless
Floor Sanders, and proudly informed me that he installed most of the state gymnasium
floors in the late 50s, including the one in Largo High School. I joked with him about
the fact that his own house is carpeted throughout, not one hardwood plant to be seen.
After the flooring business he went into the production of hydroponic tomatoes and had
a green house on 58th Street in Clearwater. At that time he supplied vine ripe tomatoes
to all of our local Publix grocery stores.
While O.C. was working in St. Petersburg in 1950 he met his late wife Betty, and
fell in love at first sight. They were married and were blessed with four sons, twins Otha
and Owen, and Kevin and Keith. Their families and extended families have now grown
to include eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. O.C. is fortunate to have
all four of his sons living in the state of Florida. When O.C. and Betty first came into
Teakwood Village, twenty-six years ago, they absolutely loved the setting of their new
home. The most unusual feature is that they have the only porch in Teakwood Village
East with a hole in the roof for the palm tree growing right through the middle of it.
One good turn gets most of the blankets.
President’s Message
By Steve Gillis
_____________________________________________________________________
Christmas is over, the decorations have been put away. New Year’s Eve party people
have sung in the New Year. ….January’s events have been going like clockwork.
All these holiday dinners, dances, brunches, golf tournaments, Tuesday coffees,
weekly evening games are put on by someone for our benefit. The timeless hours that
our friends and neighbors VOLUNTEER in Teakwood West to make all these things
happen is something I hope we never take for granted. When you walk into an event,
a dinner, Wii game, shuffleboard tournament, or any of the many things happening in
the park, you know that it is ready to go and you are going to enjoy yourself. But it
takes time, planning, imagination and effort of a VOLUNTEER. If you are one of these
VOLUNTEERS, thank you for your efforts. If you just enjoy the work of these VOL-
UNTEERS, please say thank you to them. We would be lost without them. If you want
to help with one of the events and are not sure how to go about it or who to contact,
give me a call at 585-8940.
People are like stained-glass windows. They sparkle and shine when the sun is
out, but when the darkness sets in, their beauty is revealed only if there is light from
within. —Elizabeth Kubler-Ross
Teakwood West Neighborhood Watch
By Guy Shreck
_____________________________________________________________________
The Neighborhood Watch Program is now in effect
in Teakwood West. If you see anything that
looks suspicious, any criminal activity, or people
trespassing, call the Largo Police - 587-6730. With your
help, we can deter crime in our neighborhood. Also, remember
to lock your house, shed, car, bicycle, etc. With
the economy as it is, burglaries are on the increase. We
are going to be doing more night patrols walking between
and behind the mobile to check for broken windows,
open doors, etc. Again, please call the police if you notice anything out of the ordinary.
Food Bank
_____________________________________________________________________
Thank you again Teakwood West residents and Friday night bingo players - your
contributions to the RCS Food Bank totaled 403 pounds this past month - bringing
our grand total to 6547 pounds - over 3 tons of food donated since we started
collecting!!! The economic downturn in the Largo-Clearwater area has caused severe
hardships for many people, so please continue to bring your food donations to coffees,
dinners, Bingo, etc. (see list on the board of items most needed). They also accept food
coupons - you can drop them in the slotted box in the clubhouse. Note: This month’s
Can Bingo will be held on February 19 - see board for details.
Christmas Party - Dec. 20, 2009
Guy Shreck
_____________________________________________________________________
The Christmas Party was a great success and enjoyed by all who attended. The gift
exchange was fun - just ask Bob Cameron. The food was great and lots of variety
with London Broil provided by the club. Thanks to everyone who helped from
the setting up to the cleaning up. Special thanks to George Nash (Santa), Marge and
John Kittel (our official greeters), Joe Gladd, and Bob Martin for providing the music.
Christmas Dinner - Dec. 25, 2009
Bob and May Cameron
_____________________________________________________________________
Christmas dinner was a huge success with 120 in attendance. Turkey, ham and all the trimmings
were served and no one went away hungry.
We want to thank all the help and everyone who came to enjoy Christmas dinner with us.
New Year’s Eve -
Dec. 31, 2009
Steve Gillis
_____________________________________________________________________
The New Year’s
Eve Dance was
enjoyed by a good
crowd of party goers.
We danced to the music
of Rick Elkins. Spot
dances and door prizes
were awarded to lucky
dancers and ticket holders.
A light lunch was provided and then all counted down the final seconds of a great
year. Thank you to all who helped in the planning, setup and cleaning for the event.
They include my wife Pat, Paul and Maggie Haubert, Don and Roberta Perry, Carolyn
Stettler and Steve Dyl.
I
am
pleased to announce that the brunch was a big success, and according to feedback
received, the warmed, spiced apples were a hit. A total of 184 meals were served
with the cooked excess delivered to the homeless shelter.
My sincere appreciation to everyone who helped to make this event a success,
namely: Don & Joan Ferrier, Paul & Dot Bryant, Paul & Joanne DesRoches, Sonny &
Terry LeBlanc, Barry & Sue Scott, Paul Haubert, Emma Smith, and my wife, Karen.
Also, thank you to the volunteers who cleaned up after us.
Join us for coffee and donuts and some early
morning conversation. In addition to greeting
and talking with your neighbors, you’ll
learn of any changes in our monthly activities.
Also, plan on staying at the second coffee of
the month for the Social Club General Meeting
following the coffee.
A note to our new neighbors in Teakwood West. First of all, WELCOME. We
would very much like to meet you at our morning coffees held on the first and third
Tuesday of every month. We gather in the clubhouse at 9:00 a.m. for fellowship and
donuts. This is a great way for you to become acquainted with your Teakwood West
neighbors. There is no charge – residents submit donations throughout the year to help
cover the costs. Bring your own coffee cup and if you want to take a chance on winning
one of the Share the Wealth prizes, bring a dollar for three tickets.
January hosts and hostesses were Don and Judy MacMillan, Don and Faye Whitley
and Earl and Marianne Jones. Don and Faye also served trays of cheese at the January
Coffees which were very much enjoyed by all of us. It was noted that Lou St. Jules is
now in his tenth year serving as emcee of the coffees.
Donut donations received in January:
Jan. 5 - Don & Judy MacMillan, Carolyn Stettler, Steve Dyl, Anna Mae
Weiss, Bill & Charlotte Bardash, Sharon Houston, and Jennifer Spanton
Jan. 19 - Kaye Eplett and Margie and Don McKinney
Staying Safe In The Household: How To Avoid Common Dangers
____________________________________________________________________
It’s almost a cliché to say that most accidents happen in the home, but the truth is
that if you’re not careful, you or your family can get seriously hurt just where you
feel most safe. Prevent an injury—or a tragedy—by watching out for these common
threats:
• Falls. Make sure carpets and rugs are fastened securely, electrical cords are
out of the way, and floors and staircases are clear of obstacles. Wipe up spills
immediately. Install grab bars in showers and bathtubs.
• Electrocution. Keep electrical outlets covered with safety plugs, especially
if small children are about. Examine cords regularly and replace any that are
worn. Keep them away from pets that might chew on them.
• Poisoning. Keep cleaning supplies, medicines, pesticides, and any other hazardous
substances locked up and out of reach of children and safely away from
food preparation areas. Post the number of a poison control center near your
phone, so you can call for advice without delay.
• Fire. Install smoke detectors in each bedroom, and on every floor, and keep
them in good working order. Have a plan for escaping the house in case of fire,
and practice it regularly. (Provided by First Draft)
The Annual TMHA Meeting is
scheduled for February 10th at
7:00 p.m. at the Aloha Hall. It is
important that you attend or send your
proxy form with a friend. This board is looking out for your interests in the park.
The TMHA board is selling coffee mugs at the cost of $3.00. These mugs have
the Teakwood Village logo on them and can be purchased at coffee or from any board
member.
FMO memberships are important so please renew or become a new member. The
FMO Association represents us as individual owners in legislative issues concerning
mobile homes.
Thanks, Hugh
CORRECTION: The “NOTICE OF TEAKWOOD HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIA-
TION ANNUAL MEETING” letter has incorrect dates on the Proxy Form. The
2009 dates on the form should read 2010 Annual Meeting held on February 10,
2010. Please make these changes on your proxy and initial the corrections if you will
be giving it to a neighbor or friend who plans to attend the Annual Meeting. Sorry for
this mistake.
