Jochen Rabe joined Buro Happold to push the field of Sustainable Strategies and Solutions in Europe and beyond out of
the Berlin office. He is specialising in the fields of Corporate Sustainability Strategies, Integrated Urbanism, Sustainable
and Green Infrastructure, Innovation and Systems Thinking. He has over 20 years experience in major development
projects both in the UK, Germany, Russia and overseas. Jochen has extensive expertise in running multi-disciplinary
teams working on a wide range of major projects. These cover corporate sustainability strategies, regional development
plans, strategic plans for major developments, feasibility studies, asset management, urban design and environmental
assessment through to detailed design, project implementation and post-occupancy management.
Jochen is currently leading a regional development plan in Russia for an conurbation of 400,000 population directly
linked to world’s biggest potash industry. He is advising Uralkali as a major player in the mining industry on the
sustainable development of their business and sites and worked with leaders in the field of sustainability and corporate
social responsibility such as Marks & Spencer and the Co-operative Group. Jochen currently leads a major research
project for the German Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Planning on new transmodal mobility with a special
focus on electromobility.
He worked closely with architects such as Grimshaw Architects, Foster and Partners and Terry Farell and Partners and
was the strategic planner for major schemes such as the Greenwich Peninsula, London and the Northern Quarter,
Portsmouth.
Jochen lectured at Cambridge University and talked at numerous conferences with a particular focus on integrated
design and climate change and the interface of the built and natural environment. The essence of Jochen’s work is to
develop highly sustainable and innovative yet durable and cost-effective strategies and solutions. He is also working on
a major Automotive Plant Feasiblity Study, Russia. While at Arup Jochen was the Global Leader on Green Infrastructure.
