Since 2002 we have organized the IAESTE
Global Environment Forum every summer.
The objective of this forum is as follows: Since
the foundation of IAESTE in 1948 IAESTE has
exchanged more than 300,000 students from
over 80 countries worldwide. The main aim of
IAESTE activities is to provide opportunities to
students from a scientific/technical background
to better understand foreign countries through
a practical training/internship.
Every summer IAESTE Japan receives 70 - 90
international students as IAESTE trainees who
work at Japanese industries in various
engineering/scientific fields. This summer Japan
will organize the third Forum to be held at
Kiyosato Resort Area (1600m) which faces
Mount Fuji and the beautiful South Japan Alps
from 13-18 August. Several professors and
experts in economics are invited as well as
those in engineering, and they will provide
brief comments so as to stimulate discussion.
The Forum is really an informal and casual
meeting. Music, movies, sports, and campfire
are available. Instructors are active Directors of
IAESTE Japan. Prof. Shinohara serves as a
consultant for the Cabinet of Japan, Mr.Hirano
is an executive director of Nishimatsu
Construction Company as well as the National
Representative to the World Road Federation,
and Prof.Tanimoto is the President of the
International Commission on the Preservation
of World Stone Heritages for ISRM
(International Society for Rock Mechanics) and
well known through his contributions to the
Great Sphinx in Egypt and Dunhuang Caves in
China. Their observations in both social and
natural sciences are very much related with
global environmental issues.
Hopefully in the near future, IAESTE friends
will join the World Economy Forum and help
strive for real and steady peace in the world.
IAESTE Malta : 20 Years Later
IAESTE Malta became a full member in 1984,
and this is therefore our 20th anniversary.
IAESTE Malta is a student-run committee, and
has been so ever since it was born locally. Our
commitment to be a student-run service for the
students has been unwavering ever since.
Throughout these twenty years IAESTE Malta
has strived to give the best possible opportunity
for students to work abroad, and gain
invaluable work experience. This is especially
important in today’s world where experience is
very highly valued by prospective employers
when selecting candidates for a job. In Malta
the student population is always on the
increase and so students who have gained
experience through a traineeship abroad are
given that extra edge when joining the
workforce.
During these past years Malta has consistently
been at the top of the exchange list in relation
to population size and number of students sent,
a fact of which we are proud. IAESTE Malta
exchanges an average of 35 jobs per year, which
is high compared to our population of only
400,000. Being a small island however, makes
us a very close community, a fact which is
always noted by the students who come to
Malta for their traineeships.
IAESTE Malta has always made every effort to
try and make the students’ stay as enjoyable
and fruitful as possible. During our Summer
Reception programme a number of events are
always organised. Barbecues on the beach are
always a must, as is a weekend trip to the
smaller sister island of Gozo. Trips to nearby
Sicily, which is only 3 hours away by
catamaran, have also been organised. Cultural
visits to museums and the Neolithic temples,
the world’s oldest free-standing buildings in the
world, are also a regular feature.
Since IAESTE Malta became a full member, the
committee members have tried to integrate
themselves into the international IAESTE scene
as much as possible too. IAESTE Malta has
attended every GC since it became a member,
except for one. In 1999, IAESTE Malta was host
to a very successful JUMP seminar, (a training
and motivation seminar), and the students who
attended still speak of it with fond memories.
