Relocation:
We’re Moving!
Welcome to the Black Country
University Technical College (BCUTC)
– the first of its kind and a place
where students can explore and
develop their interest in science
and engineering and build a
brighter future.
There has never been a better time to
study towards a career in the
engineering industry as we are set to
move to a new multi-million pound
campus in central Walsall; transforming
engineering in the Black Country!
The new state-of-the-art campus will be
relocated next to Ofsted outstanding
Walsall College, which will increase
opportunities for collaboration and
benefit student learning.
Being part of the wider Walsall
Learning Quarter will also give students
access to the £11m Business and
Sports Hub and £300,000 Engineering
and Manufacturing Workshop.
The BCUTC has a strong legacy of
delivery and our move to a central
Walsall location will improve access for
students from across the Black
Country and further boost the
region’s capability to meet the skills
gap in engineering.
The BCUTC will continue to operate as
normal until the move, when students
will transfer to the new campus from
April 2016.
I am thrilled to be the new Principal
of the Black Country UTC and look
forward to putting all of my energy
into securing the highest outcomes
for our students.
In meeting current students, staff and
parents, there is a clear sense of
pride in the school and a
determination to succeed.
The successful partnerships already
established at the UTC, such as that
with Siemens UK, will give our
students a cutting edge in the
workplace and certainly attracted me
to the role.
I started my teaching career in
Walsall, working in the town for nearly
10 years, and I am delighted to be
back to build upon the progress which
has already been made to bring
science and engineering back to the
forefront in the Black Country.
It’s an exciting time for the Black
Country UTC and I look forward to
welcoming you on board.
The Black Country UTC
What is a UTC?
University Technical Colleges (UTCs) are
government-funded schools that offer
14–18 year olds a great deal more
than traditional schools. They teach
students technical and scientific
subjects in a whole new way and are
educating the inventors, engineers,
scientists and technicians of tomorrow.
Skills for the future
The UK needs advanced technical skills
at all levels if we are to prosper in the
21st century. Whether in manufacturing,
wind farms, rail links or hi-tech hospitals
we need a workforce that can develop
new products, stretch and reuse existing
resources, and meet all the challenges of
the future.
A valuable technical
education
UTCs integrate technical, practical and
academic learning and create an
environment where students can thrive
and develop the abilities that industry
needs. To do this, a UTC:
• focuses on technical specialisms
• works with employers and a local
university and/or college to develop
and deliver their curriculum
• provides essential academic education
and relates this to the technical
specialisms
• has the latest equipment and
technology used by industry
• dedicates at least 40% of time to the
technical specialism including design
and building, working in teams and
problem solving.
UTC students benefit from access to:
• industry experts and specialist facilities
• real-life employer projects that stretch
their technical skills and creative
thinking
• teaching and mentoring from
specialists who currently work in
industry.
What You Will
Study
Students studying at the BCUTC will
combine practical, hands on learning
with academic subjects and will work
on projects set and monitored by
employers providing them with a
unique advantage in the world of work.
In Year 10 & Year 11 you will study:
• Core GCSEs in Maths, English
(Literature and Language), double or
triple Sciences, ICT and German
• One optional GSCE in either History,
Business or PE
• Plus Technical Engineering study
In Year 12 & Year 13 you will study:
There are 3 routes to choose from:
• Route 1:
Technical and Academic studies – mix
of A-levels and Engineering
• Route 2:
Apprenticeships – in conjunction with
Walsall College
• Route 3:
Access to Engineering – if you haven’t
quite got the grades to go straight on to
an Apprenticeship, this programme
gives you the opportunity to learn more
about Engineering as well as brush up
on your basic skills. You will also be
able to retake Maths and English
GCSEs.
How You Will
Study
We operate business hours rather than
those kept at schools and sixth form
colleges, with sessions commencing at
8.30am and ending at 5pm on
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and
at 4pm on Monday and Friday.
This does include some additional time
for private study and a range of
enrichment activities. This means that
over a two year period students get the
equivalent of almost a year’s extra time to
study - so there is no need for homework
in Year 10 and 11.
Our Mission
The Black Country UTC will:
• deliver an innovative integrated
curriculum embedding Science,
Technology, Engineering and
Mathematics (STEM), providing
opportunities for pupils to follow a wide
range of vocational pathways.
• provide young people with the skills
needed to progress into employment,
further education, training and higher
education according to their individual
abilities, aptitudes and ambitions.
• develop world class innovative practice
in teaching and learning within
engineering and science in order to
provide a model of excellence both
within the region, across the country
and internationally.
Ethos
The Black Country UTC will create
an outstanding learning environment
where students will be passionate
and committed to developing the
skills required for a career in science
and engineering.
Black Country UTC students will become:
• successful team leaders
• confident and resilient students
• positive with a ’can do attitude‘
• creative, caring and enterprising
• technical and reaching high
academic standards
In line with our vocational and
professional ethos, students are
expected to maintain the highest
standards of attendance, behaviour,
attitude and appearance.
Mission
Statement
“Developing the next
generation of world class
engineers, designers and
scientists through innovative,
inspirational, technical and
academic learning.”
Working Together
…with parents
All staff at the Black Country UTC are
aware that parents or guardians are a
student’s first and most important
educators, so we do our best to ensure
that they are fully involved in the
education process and have a stake in
all the developments regarding their
child’s learning.
…in Learning
Companies
and the
Pastoral
System
…to move
forward
Listening to the views of everyone is
critical to us to make sure that not only
do we meet the needs of all of our
students but also that we involve
everyone in the development of the
Black Country UTC.
We believe passionately in being an open
learning environment, which develops
good relationships with home; this means
we contact parents or guardians regularly
and we encourage them to contact us
whenever they feel it would be helpful.
…with
employers
We have fantastic partnerships and
links with a range of businesses to
ensure that our students gain the right
skills for the workplace.
These strategic partnerships provide our
students with opportunities to work in
state of the art environments and with
market leading technology. They also
provide excellent opportunities to work on
live briefs set by employers, attend
workshops and to gain work experience.
When students join the Black Country
UTC they will be allocated to Learning
Companies. These are mixed groups of
students from different year groups.
Not only will these be the core of the
students welfare and development
system but they will be the basis of
employer led project activities that
promote the skills of communication,
time management, planning, teamwork
and enterprise.
Through the pastoral system students
will be assigned a personal tutor to
support them via one-to-one discussions
and group discussions. Tutors will provide
guidance and advice to ensure that
students really benefit from all that is
on offer.
They are also the key point-of-contact for
parents. In addition to this they
encourage the enterprise culture and
promote social, moral well-being.
Therefore not only will there be an
opportunity for students to contribute to
the running of the school through the
student council but also parents will be
able to join the parental forum. All of
these will be accessible online in the
future as well as there being
regular gatherings.
“UTCs create a route for technician
engineers with practical skills that
can be more readily used in the
workplace. They give students an
early career focus to help engender
engineering aspiration through
specialist teaching and equipment.
Siemens UK fully supports the UTC
ethos and vision and is delighted to
support the Black Country UTC,
investing in the skills of the future.”
Brian Holliday, Divisional Director,
Siemens UK
“For the first time in our 35 year history,
Lodent Precision is employing
apprentices on a large scale and this all
thanks to the Black Country UTC. The
students were interested, polite, eager to
learn, good communicators,
conscientious and in fact a pleasure to
have on site.”
Chris Sharrant,
Director at Lodent Precision
“We have been impressed not only with
the inspirational and motivational
learning experience but with the change
in our son from a slightly nervous unsure
individual into the confident young man
he is now.”
Karen Palmer, parent
“Adam has been offered a Higher Level
Apprenticeship at ZF Lemforder – they
felt he was too qualified for the lower
Apprenticeship and created a higher
level position. Thanks to the BCUTC for
their support.”
Jackie Phillips, parent
“My son attended the Black Country
UTC’s Sixth Form, passed his exams with
the help of his brilliant teachers and is
currently on a three year Apprenticeship
with Network Rail. Get your children there
if you can – it’s a fantastic opportunity!”
Linda Asprey, parent
“Thank you for all you did for him whilst
he was with you! Let's hope he continues
to do us all proud.”
Linda Jones, parent
When I came to an Open Day I felt really
inspired and knew the chance to work
with so many employers would be a
great opportunity.
BCUTC is not like other schools as
the teachers go into the subjects in
more detail and you do a lot more
practical experiments working with
different machines.
This really helps you to understand how
the teachings apply to the real world and
think about the types of career you
could go in to.
The classes are also smaller than in
school so you get more one to one
support. Because of this I did better in
my GCSEs than I thought I would and got
an A and B in subjects I’d studied for the
first time in Year 10.
I’m now studying an Advanced
Engineering Diploma alongside A-levels
and plan to pursue a career in animal
prosthetics or as a zoologist.
Adam Phillips
Level 2 Machinery Apprentice,
ZF Lemforder
“Studying at the BCUTC definitely gave me a head-start
in my career, I am now working as an apprentice at
ZF Lemforder.”
The opportunities BCUTC
offered me and the fact I
can go on to do the advanced
diploma was a big part of
the reason I decided to
come here.
The way the college is run is far more
like a business than a school, which
encourages students like me and helps
them to learn more effectively.
My course is completely focused on
engineering which means it will be a
lot easier to get into the industry as I
will have the skills employers want I
felt taking an Apprenticeship was a
better route for me to follow because it
seems to fit with my abilities better
than university.
I study one day a week at the college
and love the machine work and
machinery programming, some of which
can be very complicated but it has set
me up perfectly for my Apprenticeship
which I do the other four days of the
week. It actually feels like I am already in
the world of work!
I would definitely encourage others to
study at the BCUTC and personally I
hope to go into lean management
which is all about saving businesses
money and looking at how efficiencies
can be made.
Level 3 Engineering Progression
Diploma, A-level Biology and Chemistry
“You get so many more opportunities in these subjects than
at school, which gives you an advantage at university or if
you want to do an Apprenticeship.”
I was fascinated by Science at
school and could see myself
as a forensic scientist, so
when the BCUTC first opened
I couldn’t wait to apply.
Engineering was a new concept to me,
as at school you only do a small amount
of technology, but I’ve learnt so much
and find it really interesting and relevant
to everyday life.
Everyone is very friendly and I’ve
made so many new friends since
coming here. Students are treated
equally and girls are encouraged just as
much as boys.
Studying Science and Engineering
opens up so many career options. It’s
such a big industry and the type of roles
you could go into are diverse. I want to
go to university and use my skills in
Biomedical engineering doing
research work.
I would encourage anyone who has an
interest in Science or Engineering to
come to the BCUTC. You get so many
more opportunities in these subjects
than at school, which gives you an
advantage at university or if you want to
do an Apprenticeship.
Jonathan Palmer
Level 3 Technician Apprentice
“I learn lots of new skills from technicians with years of
experience during my three days at Sandvik Coromant.
But at the same time I am also getting hands on
experience myself, while also getting paid a wage.”
After completing the
Advanced Diploma in
Engineering at the BCUTC, I
felt ready to step into the
workplace and was successful
in gaining an Apprenticeship
role with Sandvik Coromant.
They are an engineering company with
offices all over the world, which opens
up so many opportunities for me to
develop my career with them. They will
even pay for me to go to university.
I learn lots of new skills from technicians
with years of experience during my three
days at Sandvik Coromant. But at the
same time I am also getting hands on
experience myself, while also getting
paid a wage. The other two days are at
the BCUTC, which gives me the chance
to develop my theoretical knowledge
and discuss any questions I have
with tutors.
I would definitely encourage anyone to
do an Apprenticeship, as they are the
way forward, especially in Engineering as
many companies in the industry need
people with new skills.
I found the transition to industry very
straightforward as the school hours at
the BCUTC are from 8am to 5pm, which
helps you to prepare for working life. If
you are interested in Engineering,
coming to the BCUTC gives you a unique
opportunity to broaden your horizons on
the subject and puts you on the right
path to a successful career.
Level 3 Engineering Progression
Diploma, A-level Product
Design and Physics
“Studying Science and Engineering really appealed to
me and my parents were very encouraging. The learning
style is very different here.”
I didn’t want to stay on at
school to do my GCSEs and
thought I’d have a better
chance of progressing at
the BCUTC.
Studying Science and Engineering really
appealed to me and my parents were
very encouraging. The learning style is
very different here.
It’s more interactive and you get many
opportunities to work on live briefs for
employers. Last year, I took part in a
project where I had to design a product
for a local company and present this to
one of their senior managers. I was
given real feedback and this gave me so
much more confidence for when I
eventually go into the workplace.
The equipment we use is a lot more
advanced than in schools and more
similar to those used in the industry. I’m
now studying Product Design at
A-level and use a rapid prototype
machine to create different products.
After completing Year 13, I’d like go to
university or do a Higher Apprenticeship
so I can work in the energy industry
looking at renewable resources.
