distributed amongst themselves and was immediately spent<br />

on their daily expenditure and supporting of families.<br />

The lifestyle of these soldiers had its impact on the<br />

social and cultural life of Indian society. All soldiers, the<br />

Hindus and Muslims, lived in a camp together and served<br />

either the Hindu or Muslim ruler or leader without any<br />

hesitation. Their economic needs and profession joined<br />

them together and created an atmosphere of religious<br />

tolerance.<br />

At present we have lashkars (armies) who are<br />

fighting religious wars to revive the golden period of history.<br />

To finance their expenditure they also resort to kidnapping<br />

for ransom, seizing the properties of rivals and compelling<br />

people to pay them donation. In matters of religion and<br />

social life they are not tolerant but extremist. This is how<br />

two private armies differ <strong>from</strong> each other.<br />
