VOICE
Some Words from
the Principal:
Being responsible “Digital” Citizens:
This is a major issue for teenagers today
when they have such ready access to
social media.
Social media can have positive benefits
when used responsibly as it enables
us to have instant access to contacts
anywhere in the world. It can be used
for educational purposes, to rally public
support for an important issue or simply
to keep in touch.
As parents we need to be aware that
young people have grown up in a
digital world and that the thought of no
internet, mobile phones or social media
is not only almost unimaginable but
also frightening to them. The typical
response when parents hear about their
son or daughter being bullied on social
media is to protect them by stopping all
access. However, if young people feel
that this is how we as adults will react
many will decide that they will endure
the on line bullying rather than lose all
access to social media.
Emerald Secondary College along with
our local primary schools, has been
working with the Emerald and District
Rotary Club to organise a Community
Forum on being responsible Digital
Citizens. The Rotary Club has arranged
for Robyn Treyvaud, a renowned
expert, on Cyber Safety as guest speaker
on May 1st. Further details will be
provided closer to the date.
I have included excerpts from an article
by Michael Grose, a parenting educator,
which provides some very practical
advice.
“Keeping Kids Safe in a Cyber World”
Social Media sites have taken cyber
bullying and harassment to a new level.
Here’s how to keep your kids safe when
online.
Cyber bullying is one of the biggest,
safety issues facing young people today.
Bullying and harassment online is now
commonplace. For instance, over a
third of teenage girls have been sexually
harassed via the Internet.
The emergence of social media sites has
seen cyber bullying go to a new level.
Messages and images can now spread
like wildfire reaching a huge potential
audience in the time it takes to upload
an image or shoot off a text message.
Once the family home offered young
people an escape from schoolyard
bullies. Now the cyber world is so
invasive that their bedrooms offer no
guarantees of safety any more.
Parents should use the same offline
preventative strategies to maximise
their children’s online safety as they’ve
always used. These strategies include:
teaching children about the right way
to behave online; don’t let them spend
all night in the cyber world; and ask
questions about what they are doing and
where they go when they’re online.
Parents need to remind kids that things
in the online world can spin out of
control very quickly. A written message
or image can be circulated electronically
so rapidly that the scope and scale of
cyber bullying can be greater than any
other form of bullying.
The following seven key messages form
the basis of an online safety strategy for
kids. They should be taught to kids so
they become second nature, just as the
messages about stranger danger were
absorbed by an earlier generation.

1. Respect others. Make kids
aware that what they send can offend.
Discuss with kids the types of messages
and images that can cause harm to others
when sent. Teenagers often walk a fine
line with what they do and say to each
other offline, yet it’s relatively harmless.
The same type of behaviour online,
however can be a different story, as they
are very public.
2. Think before you send.
Remind kids cyberspace is a very public
and permanent form. A text message
or image sent to just one person can be
passed to a potentially unlimited number.
Once they are sent they’re almost
impossible to erase and take back.
3. Treat online passwords like
your house key. Teach kids to keep
passwords guarded at all times. Young
people can be incredibly trusting of
each other, which is to be encouraged.
However, there are some things, such as
online passwords that they don’t share,
not even with their best friend.
4. Block bullies. Teach kids to
block bullying messages. They can
filter out messages and addresses online.
Similarly, they block text messages from
bullies as well.
5. Don’t reply to harassment.
Bullies can retain proof of your response,
which can further be spread around.
Besides responding to bullying behaviour
often simply encourages the bully to
continue.
6. Save the evidence. If kids are
bullied they should keep the pictures and
offending messages. They can be used as
proof that bullying has occurred.
7. Tell someone. The insidious
part of bullying is that kids on the
receiving end often don’t seek help,
as they think there’s something wrong
with them. Talk with kids about going
to a trusted adult, when they feel their
rights or safety have been violated. They
should, with your help, report online
bullying to the appropriate service
provider.
Sticking the proverbial head in the sand
regarding kid’s use of communications
technology is no longer an option for
parents. Savvy parents need to learn as
much as they can about children’s and
young people’s online lives so they can
respond to situations appropriately.
Student Accident:
I remind parents that neither the school
nor Department have accident insurance
in case of a student being injured at
school. There are a range of companies
that provide accident insurance and
parents who are considering this option
need to check carefully to ensure that it
meets their needs.
Grounds/Yard Supervision:
Staff supervision does not officially start
until 8.20am and finishes at 3.45pm
although there is a staff member rostered
on bus duty until 4.00pm. Parents who
have students arrive at school prior to
8.20am need to be aware that there is
no one on official supervision until this
time. There are staff at school prior to
this time but they are not “on duty”.
Afternoon supervision finishes when the
final bus departs.
Junior School Report :
Yr 7:
We would like to welcome our new Yr 7 students to the
Junior School at ESC. So far, staff have been impressed
by the way these students have adapted to Secondary
School life and we are very proud of the way they have
conducted themselves.
Yr. 7 students will enjoy a day of activities at Cardinia
Lake on March 22nd. This day is designed to help
students further develop their connections with their
peers and their Home Group teachers. Excursion
paperwork was given to students earlier in the week.
Yr. 7 have also met their Peer Support Leaders and
have participated in activities organised by these Yr 10
students. We look forward to getting to know our Yr 7s
more over the year.
Year 8:
A big thanks to the Yr 8 students who helped out on our
First Day Conferences. These students were prepared
to give up their own time and they all fulfilled their role
well. Thank you to: Tyler Jarrett, Ben Tohill, Lara
Chaloner, Jacynta Howden, Kai Fallon, Hamish
Burnie, Sarah Marotta and Daniel Edwards.
Yr 9:
Our Yr 9 student are lucky enough to be the first
group to experience our new program, ‘Connect’. This
program runs on Wednesdays and throughout the year
students will be exposed to a variety of sessions that are
aimed at enriching their schooling and providing them
with valuable life-skills. Students will also be able to
experience a variety of teaching approaches.
Contacting the school:
A big thank you to all of the parents who attended the
First Day Conferences. A reminder that parents should
contact their child’s Home Group teacher if they have
any concerns that need to be discussed.
Music @ ESC:
We would like to welcome back all instrumental music
students for another great year of music at ESC! Our
instrumental program provides students with the opportunity
to develop confidence, persistence, excellence and positive
relationships with peers and teachers through learning
music. As students receive weekly lessons from specialist
instrumental teachers, they are also members of unique music
ensembles where students learn fun music and practice for
upcoming performances. All students are welcome to enrol for
instrumental lessons for 2013. Forms may be collected from
the general office.
I would like to remind students who are already enrolled with
the program, that ensemble rehearsals are already underway.
As there will be performances throughout the year, full
attendance at rehearsals is a crucial part for students to be well
prepared.
this concert will be able to go ahead.
Evonne Neal – our specialist instrumental teacher for
woodwind in 2012, was no longer able to return to ESC due
to last minute circumstances. At present, we are still in the
process of appointing a new teacher and working to fill the
position as soon as possible. The new woodwind teacher
will contact students who have enrolled to learn woodwind
instruments once he/she has been appointed on staff, and
lessons will commence immediately.
We look forward to another year of fantastic music at ESC.
2013 WINTER CONCERT:
The 2013 Winter Concert will be held on the 20th June 7pm.
We expect this exciting event to be a great night of
showcasing students’ musical talent and work. In hopes that
the AEU 38 hour week work bans are lifted as a result of
successful negotiations with the government, we expect that
completed this task at home , but
she was the second person to have
completed and then present this task the
next time she had science. Well done
Emily!
Top effort Emily
The next three students, Tristan
Gardener, William Gardner &
YEAR 9 CONNECT PROGRAM: From the students.................
In the first two weeks of the Connect Program we have done many things.
In the first week we listened to a comedian named Declan Fay. He taught us
to stop trying to fit in and to be ourselves. We then did rotations of 4 different
activities, ncluding creating a Dream Board identifying our interests and
goals, we wrote a letter to ourselves outlining our feelings about Year 9,
being involved in the Connect Program and what we hope to get out of it
(which is to be opened at the end of the year), Theatre Sports – which involved
participating in a number of games and activities, and finally the Amazing
Race which had us following clues and taking challenges around the school.
These activities were designed to help us bond with each other and have a
great start to the Connect Program.
In the second week we examined the personal characteristics we would bring
to the Connect Program, then wrote them on a cut out person for display in our
HG rooms. We then explored our different learning styles by taking a test on
Multiple Intelligences and compared our own results with the rest of the class.
In the afternoon we planned our activities for our Home Group’s activity day at
Emerald Lake Park.
It has been interesting being involved in the Connect Program 2013 as well
as a challenges getting used to spending the whole day working on alternative
tasks with our Home Group members and our Home Group Teachers, but there
have been many fun moments and we hope there will be many more in the
future.
CONNECT – the Launch of Emerald New Year 9 Program:
On Wednesday 6th February all Year 9 students undertook their first day in the Connect Program. The day was kicked off in
EPAC with an official introduction by the programs coordinator, Mrs Ritu Arora, which was then followed by a guest speaker
Declan Fay. Declan is one of Australia’s leading comedy writers. He has performed at the Comedy festival, the fringe Festival
and written for some of the best (and worst) television shows. He provided many relevant points and had the students entertained
with his own personal school stories.
Later the students engaged in activities run by their home group teachers. Mr Closter had students running all over the school in
an Amazing race challenge, along with them having to rock climb on the gym wall.
A huge thank you also goes to Gemco (the local Emerald Theatre Group) who also ran a theatre sports session which students
undertook during the day. This session challenged their own personal comfort zone and by the sounds of things there were some
pretty natural actors in amongst the Year 9 cohort, so a huge thank you to David Greenaway, Evie Houseman & Ash Herring
from Gemco.
This term students will continue to look at themselves, as part of the Personal Term focus, and how they learn and adapt to
different learning environments. Parents will shortly receive some extra information about what is coming up as well as an
update on several other ‘Connect’ related matters.
Staff Profile – Emily Pearson
Emily has joined our staff this year and is excited to be teaching
Science and Health at ESC. Prior to entering the teaching
profession Emily studied Science at Monash University,
specialising in how the human
body works. She was involved
in the development of a research
project to increase the survival
rate of pre-term babies, and this
was a highlight of her university
experience.
Emily is the Home Group
teacher of one of our Yr 12
Home groups - 08B. She is
looking forward to working
closely with them in this, their
final year of schooling. Emily
has been working hard in these
initial weeks on getting to know her students and she is looking
forward to the year ahead. Emily enjoys keeping fit, travelling,
and exploring the quirky cafes of Melbourne. Welcome from all
of us at Emerald Secondary College, Emily.
Staff Profile – Steve Barrett
Steve began his teaching career here at ESC. This year he is
SOMETHING ABOUT YR. 7s:
With two weeks of classes having passed I would like to
comment on how well our Year 7 students have settled in. All
students seem to be enjoying the differences that secondary
school brings. As I have visited classes I have seen students
on task and engaged in their lessons. Many of the staff have
commented on how the first day interviews have assisted in this
smooth transition. We would encourage any parent who has
questions or concerns about their child to contact their child’s
home group teacher and continue the dialogue that began on
that first day. Just a reminder to parents that the Year 7 Health/
PE booklet was not on the original booklist and that the office
is accepting the $30 payment for this. The booklet will then be
given to your son/daughter.
common theme that ESC is a ‘great school.’ They spoke about
many of the opportunities that students can undertake in their
time here. They all acknowledged that they are looking forward
to representing the student body in 2013. We wish them well and
look forward to them continuing to lead by example.
Bushfires - Evacuation Drill and Code Red days
It has been a hot start to the year and given this is a factor the
school took the opportunity on Monday 11th February to hold an
Evacuation Drill. Given the time of year and recent “fire activity”
in the area all students understood the need for such a drill and
were terrific in their cooperation. It is vital that we educate our
new and returning students on our evacuation process if we are
faced with an emergency situation. If your child has expressed
a particular concern about their safety, please do not hesitate to
contact your child’s home group teacher.
The College will be in constant communication with relevant
authorities throughout this Term so that we can keep ourselves
informed of any issues relating to the threat of bushfires. We
have been monitoring the situation before dismissing classes and
buses at the end of each day with announcements throughout the
whole school.
We will continue to reflect on our evacuation procedures and
make improvements where necessary to ensure all of us know
what to do in the event of an emergency.
A reminder to parents that if we are faced with an evacuation
event, PLEASE DO NOT COME UP TO THE COLLEGE TO
COLLECT YOUR CHILD. This would make an emergency
situation even more dangerous. We appreciate your support in
this matter.
If a “Code Red” day is forecast, Emerald Secondary College
will be closed. No staff or students will be on-site at this time.
When notified by the Department of Education of a closure, we
will communicate this with you via letters, sms and our college
website.
School Leadership:
Emerald is proud of the opportunities that it offers students
to undertake leadership roles. On our very first assembly for
the year our new student leaders ran the assembly. They all
spoke with confidence and clearly had the respect of the student
audience. Their individual messages to the students had a

Staff Development
2013 Focus for Staff
As teachers, we aspire to enable
all our students to become
successful learners, confident and
creative individuals, active and
informed citizens. To do this we, as
teachers, must constantly challenge
ourselves and continue to create
a culture that fosters and supports
our own learning and development.
This year the focus for staff
will be on Quality Teaching &
Learning, Positive Relationships
and Personalised Learning. These
areas are the focus of our Annual
Implementation Plan (AIP) and
forms part of our Strategic Plan
which is implemented via the
Principal, Assistant Principals and
Leading Teachers.
A new Professional Growth model
will be introduced for all staff at
the end of this term focusing on
these three areas. This will involve
staff working in teams, setting
goals, undertaking professional
development and participating in
peer observation sessions that will
take place throughout the year.
New Staff
2013 saw the addition of six new
staff at ESC, Stephen Barrett
(Science/Humanities), Emma
Holmes (Maths/IT), Emily
Pearson (Science), Alice Enter
(Humanities/Science), Pauline
Hoskin (Library) and Roderick
McLeod (Instrumental Music).
An induction program took place
for new staff at the beginning of
the school year and continues
throughout the year. It is fantastic
to see new young teachers come
into a school such as ESC with
fresh ideas and a real desire to
assist students with their learning. I
wish them well for the year!
CLEAN UP AUSTRALIA DAY
SUNDAY 3RD MARCH
9.00-11.00 AM
EMERALD SECONDARY COLLEGE
www.cleanupaustraliaday.org.au
From the Maths KLA:
Is your ESC Student prepared for class?
In order to get the most from his/her maths lesson every student needs to bring:
1. The appropriate Text Book.
2. The associated Homework book in Yrs 7-10 (these need to be in class as
there are sheets/activities that may be done in class.
3. The appropriate calculator. The TI30 (green) for Yrs 7-9 and Yr 10 Maths
for everyday living and Yr 10 (standard). The Tinspire (CAS) is required for Yr
9 SEAL, year 10 Enriched Maths, year 11 General Maths, year 11 Mathematical
Methods and all year 12 maths.
4. Two (2) A4 exercise books. The first is for writing notes and keeping
glossary and the second is for completing work. Both may be collected at times for
checking and the other may still be required. These two need to SEPARATE.
5. Pencils, Pens, erasers, rulers. Compasses, protractors and other maths tools
are useful.
This year all classes from Yr 7-10 have a Common Assessment Task that assesses
students’ readiness for class as well as completion of work and setting out of work.
As such there will be regular equipment audits and book checks. We are aware that
a minority of students are awaiting back orders of the textbooks but this should be
sorted in the near future.
Is any extra help needed?
If your students needs extra help in maths there are two opportunities for him/her to
seek extra help outside of class. On Tuesday lunchtimes, Mrs Heather Maxwell runs
a ‘homework assist’ session in the library, during which she can help students with
their homework. Heather was part of the Quicksmart team last year and this year
is coming in on a voluntary basis. On Thursday lunchtimes a team of teachers who
can help with both senior and junior maths will be in A2. Bring lunch with you.
When the industrial dispute is over it is also hoped that a regular afterschool session
may be able to be introduced as well.
Homework?
Remember that any unfinished class work is homework. All classes in Yrs 7 to 10
should be also receiving regular homework from a homework program in maths.
Please follow up with your student if they say they don’t have any homework.
