About the Conference Theme
New Directions: Blueprint for the Future
On behalf of the 2007 Conference
Planning Committee of the
Minnesota Community Education
Association, we’d like to warmly
welcome you to the 42nd Annual
NCEA Conference.
This year’s conference theme,
“New Directions: Blueprint for the
Future,” was developed by conference
planning committee members.
They envisioned a conference that
would provide each participant:
Best practices and research
based strategies in Community Education
programs
Cutting edge ideas for developing
“new directions” in Community Education
programs and processes
Opportunities to meet new
people and build relationships for
continued collaborative community
success
Over the last year, many volunteers
have worked hard to provide
you with an outstanding and comprehensive
conference. We hope we
have met your expectations. During
the conference, we hope you will
take advantage of the many fine
conference activities and the excellent
facilities, meet the exhibitors,
and enjoy the Twin City area.
If you should have any questions
or need any assistance during your
stay, please stop by the “Warming
House” hospitality booth. We want
you to feel you are at home. Your
Minnesota friends will be happy to
help you.
Again, welcome and enjoy the conference!
Judy Jenson, Doug Spray
and Wendy Webster
Tri-Chairs, Local Planning Committee
A special thank you to
Jennifer McNeil for her
significant volunteer time
toward designing this program
brochure. Your time and hard
work are greatly appreciated.
& More
Explore Twin Cities
Minneapolis was recently named
the “Most Fun City in America,”
in part because it’s loaded with
things to do. The area boasts 57
museums, and the most theater
seats per capita outside New
York. And that’s not all, there
are amusement parks, dozens
of nearby casinos and so much
shopping that a Travel + Leisure/
AOL readers’ poll ranked the
city the fourth-best place in the
country to shop.
Collegial Support and Professional Development for Community Education Leaders
In Memory
of William Patterson
On May 3, 2007, community educators
across Minnesota, and the country, lost a
friend and colleague to cancer. William
Patterson was the Community Education
Director for Farmington Area Public
Schools in Minnesota, when he passed
away due to complications stemming
from leukemia at the age of 54.
A highly skilled and experienced community
education administrator, Bill was
well respected in the community education
community. For 17 years, Bill was
a leader who helped many school districts
and community organizations address
the diverse and challenging expectations
of a demanding public. He possessed a
knack for uniting people and communities
to respond to difficult community issues.
He was never too busy to offer support
and lend a hand to complete projects
of varying degrees of difficulty.
A member of the Farmington Rotary
and Lions Club, Bill was dedicated to
the school district and his community.
Bill was also involved in countless ways
with statewide efforts to position MCEA
and support community educators in our
“leading edge” work.
In all things that Bill did, he worked to
create a strong connection between the
school district and the community they
serve. He did so through his own personal
commitment of time and effort, and in the
process he developed close friendships with
co-workers, parents, students and members
of community organizations. Bill had
a wonderful gift for solving problems and
a singular wit that helped everyone keep
perspective and a positive outlook. He was
a person of talent, dedication and tremendous
character, and he will be missed.
Bill leaves behind his loving wife Stella
and their four children; Sarah, Paul,
Kristen and Alex.
It’s the deadliest combination going:
bullies who get what they want from
their target, bullied kids who are afraid
to tell, bystanders who either watch,
participate, or look away, and adults who
see the incidents as simply “teasing” and
a normal part of childhood. Discussing
her new book, “The Bully, The Bullied,
Departs from the Hyatt Hotel Lobby
Completed in 2006, the new Minneapolis Central Library is
part of the Minneapolis Public Library system that was established
in 1885 under the vision that a community would be
stronger and more prosperous if knowledge was shared rather
than held as a private commodity. To reflect the greater community
that it serves, the library collection includes fiction and
non-fiction materials in 18 languages. The library also hosts
a New American Center, which offers materials specifically to
serve new immigrants. The library also houses a partnership with
Minneapolis Community Education to make an adult basic education
teacher available to library patrons. Jump on the shuttle
bus to visit this innovative and inviting site — it’s no wonder
that Minneapolis is one of the nation’s most literate cities!
