SEA 1414 Penguin Missile
SIMULATION TYPE: Tactical Missile Flight Analyser PROCUREMENT STAGE: Contract
The simulation component of the project will provide for missile firing training for aircrew, missile practicefiring
trajectory predictions and post firing flight analysis. The Penguin Mk 2 Mod 7 ASM is built by
Kongsberg Defence and Aerospace AS of Norway, and will be launched from Super Seasprite helicopters
operating from ANZAC Class frigates.
SEA 1428 Phase 2B/3, Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile
SIMULATION TYPE: Task Trainer PROCUREMENT STAGE: YOD 2005/06
SEA 1428 Phase 2B/3 seeks to introduce the Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile (ESSM) system into the ANZAC
Class ships (08 - HMAS Ballarat, 09 - HMAS Toowoomba, and 10 - HMAS Perth) and to retro-fit the
system into HMAS ANZAC and HMAS Arunta. The simulation component could be training systems for
targeting and firing, and changes to existing simulators.
SEA 1439 Collins Class Submarine Enhancements
SIMULATION TYPE: Various PROCUREMENT STAGE: Contract
As part of the new submarine project, various simulators were developed for the Collins Class submarines.
The main ones are the Combat System Simulator (CSS), located at the Submarine Warfare Systems Centre at
HMAS Watson, and the Platform Training Simulator (PTS), located in the Submarine Training and System
Centre at HMAS Stirling. Raytheon Australia Limited (originally Rockwell Systems Australia and then
Boeing Australia), was subcontracted by the Australian Submarine Corporation to provide the CSS. A major
option being considered is to move the CSS to HMAS Stirling on completion of the submarine combat
system development, test and fix period. This decision will be made as part of the strategy for the Collins
Class Replacement Combat System. The PTS consists of two components, a Submarine Control Simulator
(SCS) and a Propulsion Control Simulator (PCS), and is used to train Collins Class personnel to operate the
submarine platform and ship control systems. The SCS and PCS may be operated independently or and they
may be linked to provide control room and machinery control room communication and interaction
simulation. Link Miles in the UK, under subcontract to ASC, developed the PTS. The present contractor,
Thales Simulation, with input from SAAB Systems who developed the Submarine Integrated Ship Control,
Management and Monitoring System (ISCMMS), both again under subcontract to ASC, is undertaking an
upgrade to the PTS to reflect recent changes to submarine equipment and operating characteristics.
Consideration is also being given to procuring a Collins Class Propulsion Control Reference System (PCRS)
to provide an in-country test, development and training system for the Collins Propulsion System which has a
large simulation component. The final configuration of the PCRS, including the required simulation
component, and the prime contractor for that procurement is still being considered.
