EDUCATION
LIFE'S JOURNEYS TAKE
US DOWN ROADS WE
DIDN’T KNOW EXISTED
“Just as I ‘fell into’ my credit career, so too I ‘fell into’ teaching,
but I fell in love with both! The beauty of teaching is that it is a two
way street. If you want credit to remain exciting and fresh, then
try teaching it. It’s a great complement to your credit career.”
- JULES EAMES CMCICM(GRAD), CICM TUTOR
AS credit management gears up,
new opportunities are opening
for credit professionals to teach.
Debbie Tuckwood, Director of
Learning and Development, explains
what’s involved.
2014 marked not only the year that
the Institute received a Royal Charter, but
many credit management departments
were gearing up and professionalising
teams. As a result, the Institute received
the highest number of entries for
qualifications for a decade and over 90
more learners qualified as Associates than
the previous year. The Institute trained
four more MCICM(Grad) teachers last
year to meet this growing demand but
needs more. For a second year, all Credit
Academy classes were full and many were
booked up months ahead. Do you have a
burning desire to teach? Read on to find
out what is involved:
Who are we looking for?
Enthusiastic, knowledgeable and
committed credit managers with a genuine
interest in developing people.
How much work is available?
It depends on which subject you can
teach, how much time you have and
the amount of MCICM(Grad) teachers
that run two courses a year. We would
contact you three times a year several
months before classes start to find out
your availability. Learning Support work is
available all year round.
Could I combine my credit role with
teaching?
Yes. Most of our teachers are full-time
credit managers. They generally teach
either 3-hour weekly evening classes at
local companies or fortnightly 90 - 120
minute virtual classes from home. Open
virtual classes usually run in the evening
from 19:00, although teachers start about
30 minutes earlier by uploading their
lesson materials.
I work part-time. Could I teach during
the day?
Yes. Some companies prefer day-time
classes, either weekly face-to-face
sessions in the late afternoon; lunchtime
virtual classes; or six full-day classes
delivered over several months.
Also we run classes in the afternoon to
suit companies in different time zones, for
example Office Depot is learning with us in
Romania.
Would I need any qualifications?
Yes. You would need relevant degree-level
professional or academic qualifications,
e.g. MCICM(Grad) and either a teaching
qualification, e.g. PTLLS, or be prepared
to complete teacher training within the
first 12 months. Most local colleges
run PTLLS evening classes or a one
week intensive course. Many of our
MCICM(Grad) teachers have passed twoyear
Certificates of Education or
PGCEs.
What would be involved?
You would be responsible for up to 15
learners (maximum 8 for Level 5
courses) for each qualification programme
that you signed up for. This would involve
planning and delivering lessons, providing
an induction for the learners, monitoring
individual progress, setting and marking
homework after each class, and evaluating
the course.
What training will I receive?
We would encourage you to shadow an
experienced teacher, maybe by listening
into virtual classes. You would have
initial training and support from one
of our lead teachers, and feedback on
your lessons. We arrange regular calls
to discuss results and update you on
the latest developments. Also we would
encourage you to attend relevant events
to keep up-to-date, e.g. CICM Education
Conference and Masterclasses, and keep
a record of your Continuous Professional
Development (CPD).
I’ve only just qualified, wouls I still
be suitable?
Absolutely, you would have the advantage
of up-to-date knowledge and recent
experience of CICM programmes.
How do I find out more?
Email education@CICM.com with details
of your qualifications, experience and an
indication of your availability and we will
be in touch. We hope you are interested.
