Physicians With Heart Returns to Tajikistan This Fall
For the third time in five years, the Physicians With
Heart airlift will return to Tajikistan, a former Soviet
Republic experiencing widespread poverty. The 7
million Tajiks face both high non-communicable and
communicable disease rates as well as infant and
maternal mortality rates that are among the highest
in the WHO European Region. Malnutrition is a major
public health concern. This year’s PWH delegation
will deliver medical aid and supplies to help address
this ongoing need.

125 residents and students to attend the
National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and
Medical Students. Thank you for supporting this important
educational endeavor.
You also support an educational program aimed at a much
younger audience, Tar Wars, an in-school program aimed at
keeping fourth and fifth graders smoke-free. The Tar Wars
poster contest winners recently wrapped up a once-in-a-lifetime
visit to Washington, DC, during which they met with legislators
on the hill.

Tar Wars: Kids Get the Word Out
With your help, the Foundation provides
$75,000 annually to support Tar Wars, the
Academy’s tobacco-free education program
for kids. In particular, these funds helped
cover expenses for the 2010 Tar Wars
National Conference and Poster Contest
held in Washington, D.C., on July 26-27.
At the conference, each student shared his
or her poster’s “stay tobacco-free” message
with the other state winners. The following
morning, after a brief training by AAFP
government relations staff, the students, their families and state coordinators headed off
to prearranged appointments with their states’ senators and representatives during which
they delivered a print of their poster and a Tar Wars promotional brochure. The visits
provide visibility for Family Medicine, the AAFP, and tobacco-use prevention.
Future contest plans include videos and multimedia presentations—in addition to the posters.
Family Medicine Interest Groups: The “Go-To” Resource

Time to Talk CARDIO Showed Success
in Clinical Settings
In 2009, the AAFP Foundation partnered with Time to Talk CARDIO (TTTC),
an educational program developed to help patients and providers improve
communication skills to help better manage heart health. Based on initial research
conducted Register in AAFP Here! pilot practices, results showed that TTTC significantly increased
overall use of communication skills and improved overall satisfaction with medical
visits for patients and providers. TTTC is currently implemented in various AAFP
practices across the U.S., with several practices continuing to assess it in 2010.

Mute in Rudaki
This school is home to 190 students (ages
6 to 18) and provides a positive learning
environment for children with hearing
and speech impairments. Many of the
students are from orphanages throughout
Tajikistan, others from low-income families
and even some from high-income families
because of the level of specialized
instruction. The Children’s Project will
provide new sewing machines and an
oven for the home economics class,
enabling the children to learn a trade.
