Time to Talk CARDIO Showed Success in Clinical Settings In 2009, the AAFP Foundation partnered with Time to Talk CARDIO (TTTC), an educational program developed to help patients and providers improve communication skills to help better manage heart health. Based on initial research conducted Register in AAFP Here! pilot practices, results showed that TTTC significantly increased overall use of communication skills and improved overall satisfaction with medical visits for patients and providers. TTTC is currently implemented in various AAFP practices across the U.S., with several practices continuing to assess it in 2010. Physicians With Heart continued from page 1 The Children’s Project The Children’s Project is an important and heartwarming part of every PWH airlift. Benefitting hundreds of children each year, the project provides much-needed items for orphanages, institutions, schools or hospitals in the recipient country. Volunteers, who bring vitamins, furniture, bedding, clothing, school supplies and The mission of the Physicians With Heart project is to procure and distribute medical aid, provide medical education to local physicians, and to improve the quality of life for children in the host country. Physicians With Heart is a partnership between the AAFP Foundation, the U.S. State Department and Heart to Heart International. In Tajikistan, the project team will be visiting three boarding schools, each in dire need of basic items such as chairs, desks and school supplies. Boarding School #4 in Dushanbe This school is home to nearly 400 socially orphaned and homeless children (ages 7 to 16). The Children’s Project will furnish two classrooms with desks and chairs, a teacher’s desk, coat racks and blackboards. Boarding School in Yavan This school cares for 180 children (ages 6 to 18) and is home to 100. The Children’s Project will provide personal lockers for the children living at the school, in addition to desks and Your AAFP Foundation through the Family Medicine Philanthropic Consortium (FMPC) will be awarding grants to AAFP Constituent Chapters and Chapter Foundations in December 2010 as it concludes its 2010 FMPC Grant Awards cycle. To be eligible, Chapters had to submit a grant application which was then reviewed by the FMPC Steering Committee, a peer leadership group of Chapter executives and family physicians. It is through your support of the national Dues Check-Off campaign that the FMPC and the AAFP Foundation are able to provide grants for deserving Chapter-level programs. Children in Dushanbe and Yavan will receive backpacks, school supplies, hats, gloves, socks and underwear, and handmade quilts made with the loving hands of volunteers. Boarding School for the Deaf and Mute in Rudaki This school is home to 190 students (ages 6 to 18) and provides a positive learning environment for children with hearing and speech impairments. Many of the students are from orphanages throughout Tajikistan, others from low-income families and even some from high-income families because of the level of specialized instruction. The Children’s Project will provide new sewing machines and an oven for the home economics class, enabling the children to learn a trade.
