Tar Wars: Kids Get the Word Out
With your help, the Foundation provides
$75,000 annually to support Tar Wars, the
Academy’s tobacco-free education program
for kids. In particular, these funds helped
cover expenses for the 2010 Tar Wars
National Conference and Poster Contest
held in Washington, D.C., on July 26-27.
At the conference, each student shared his
or her poster’s “stay tobacco-free” message
with the other state winners. The following
morning, after a brief training by AAFP
government relations staff, the students, their families and state coordinators headed off
to prearranged appointments with their states’ senators and representatives during which
they delivered a print of their poster and a Tar Wars promotional brochure. The visits
provide visibility for Family Medicine, the AAFP, and tobacco-use prevention.
Future contest plans include videos and multimedia presentations—in addition to the posters.
Family Medicine Interest Groups: The “Go-To” Resource
Thanks to your financial support, medical students have the best “Go-To” resource for
exploring Family Medicine in an informal but educational (and fun!) setting.
The AAFP Foundation
donated $75,000 in
2010 to the Family
Medicine Interest
Groups (FMIG) Funding
Initiative, which
supports FMIG activities
in medical schools
across the nation.
FMIGs provide
information and
practical advice that
may not be offered in
the medical school
curriculum—What can I expect as a family physician? How do I research residencies?
Where can I find ideas for community service projects? And more. Your continued
donations will help your AAFP Foundation support this critical resource.
2010 AAFP Foundation Pfizer Immunization
Awards Program Winners
The AAFP Foundation sponsors the AAFP Foundation Pfizer Immunization Awards
through a grant provided by Pfizer Inc. These awards make it possible for Family Medicine
residency programs to implement and share their best practices, and receive recognition
for identifying and developing solutions to overcome barriers to childhood immunizations.
2010 National
Conference Scholarships
Your continued support helped to fund
125 National Conference Scholarships,
giving students and residents the
opportunity to attend this year’s
National Conference of Family Medicine
Residents and Medical Students in
Kansas City.
If you’ve ever wondered if your donation
makes a difference, read this comment
from a fourth-year medical student from
the University of Illinois College
of Medicine.
“Attending this conference
affirmed my interest in Family
Medicine and it is in part
because of your generous
gift that I plan to pursue a
Family Medicine residency as
I enter the match. Thank you
so much for the wonderful
opportunity, [and] I hope that
in the future this scholarship
will continue to inspire firsttime
student attendees as
much as it has inspired me!”
