CHAPLAIN'S CORNER
Ms C O'Gorman
Trivial Pursuit question: Which army has as its war-cry „blood and fire‟? Answer: the Salvation Army. This seems
to be a strange motto for a Christian denomination! These words refer to the blood of Jesus shed on the cross to
save all people from sin and the fire of the Holy Spirit which purifies Christian believers. The Salvation Army is one
of the most respected Christian denominations in Australia today, although they do not see themselves as a
separate denomination, just a group of Christians taking the love of God to needy people around them, in a nondiscriminatory
way. They feed the poor, comfort marginalised people often living on the streets, provide shelter for
those who need it, visit and minister to criminals in prison and all of that before they preach anything.
Recently the 100 th anniversary of the death of William Booth, the founder of the Salvation Army was
commemorated. The metaphor of an army may seem to be a rather strange one to choose for a Christian
organisation; even today, members of the Salvation Army can often be seen in their uniforms, and instead of
ministers, bishops and youth leaders, they have captains, majors and lieutenants. It is helpful to remember that
Booth established this Christian movement at a time when Britain controlled a great empire and military action and
concepts were much more a part of daily awareness and language than they are for us today.
Local woman Eva Burrows, a graduate of Brisbane State High School, at one stage became the world-wide leader,
the General of the Salvation Army, thus making it the only Christian denomination that has so far allowed a woman
to rise to that level of leadership. General Burrows was indeed an inspirational leader whose life was one
dedicated to the service of others.
When William Booth died, 150 000 people filed past his coffin as he lay in state and 40 000 attended his funeral,
such was the impact of this man and the army which he founded. When we read what the Bible says about faith
without works we can see why this is the case. People are not inspired by a faith that does not lead to practical
actions. When the love of God is shared in practical ways, especially with those who are not the easiest to love,
then people see the reality and the integrity of that faith and only then are they willing to listen to the message of
the cross, which William Booth understood was central to the message he was seeking to convey. Long may the
Salvation Army serve the world!
HEAD OF MIDDLE SCHOOL
Dr K Williamson
NAPLAN
Student reports for NAPLAN were delivered to Somerville House just before the vacation. The results are being
checked carefully by Middle School teachers for any obvious discrepancies across numeracy and the four areas of
literacy. Each of the reporting scales, which span Years 3, 5, 7 and 9, describes individual student performances in
relation to their respective national averages and their distributions.
General information about the national literacy and numeracy assessments will be posted to parents this week
along with the student reports. In particular, descriptions will be provided on how to interpret student reports, the
scales that are used and their significance. For more information which may assist you with the interpretation of
the report or more generally about NAPLAN, please refer to www.naplan.edu.au
Students‟ results at Somerville House for the NAPLAN tests were again excellent this year. A full summary of the
School‟s results compared to the distribution and averages of the national and state results will be published on the
School website once the official results are officially confirmed on 12 October by ACARA.
STUDENT LEADERSHIP
The Middle School endeavours to develop a strong student culture that focuses on the foundations of leadership
and service from the early to later years, and this is reinforced both inside and outside the classroom. Student
leaders are provided with on-going support through opportunities to be involved in a wide range of decision making
within the School. The process of choosing student leadership positions in the Middle School for 2013 will
commence next week and will continue for the following three weeks. Initially, Middle School Captains will be
chosen and this will be followed by the selection of House Co-Captains.
During pastoral care sessions, students will discuss the essential qualities deemed desirable for effective student
leadership. They will work through issues of leadership styles and the requirements of each role. Subsequently,
voluntary voting by Years 7, 8 and 9 students (weighted for different Year levels) will produce a short-list of
candidates. Teachers will then vote on and provide further information about this selected group.
3

In the final stages, the Head of Middle School and the Head of Year 8 will interview the short-listed candidates
using consistent and pre-determined criteria. The recommendations for Middle School Captains in 2013 will then
be forwarded to Mrs Kearney for her consideration. Details about the selection process for Middle School House
Captains will be presented in the Newsletter closer to the appointment dates.
GRANDPARENTS AND GODPARENTS’ DAY
In the last week of Term 3, Year 8 students were very pleased to welcome their Grandparents, Godparents and
other special guests to Somerville House to express their appreciation to these important people in their lives. This
was a memorable occasion with a record number of guests attending on the day.
Year 8 students enjoyed lunch with their guests who were then taken on tours of the School. Following this, there
was a special service and performances held in Harker Hall that included various musical items performed by the
Year 8 mass choir and the musical groups. The quality of the performances was impressive and our appreciation
is extended to the Music staff for their significant contributions.
Congratulations to all students and staff who contributed to the service through their meaningful words, poems and
technology displays, and special thanks also to those who helped with producing programs, ushering, catering and
cleaning up afterwards. Grandparents and Godparents‟ Day was a very valuable experience for Year 8 students,
their guests and the Middle School staff.
STUDENT ORIENTATION: 2013
Students who will be new to Somerville House in 2013 and entering the Middle School will have an opportunity to
spend a day participating in normal school activities during the Orientation Week. „Buddies‟ have been assigned to
assist these girls, including new boarders who will meet and share meals with the current Year 7 and 8 boarders.
Overall, the main purpose of the week-long program is to familiarise new students in 2013 with the „geography‟ of
the Middle School and to develop initial contacts with teachers and other students.
During Term 4, current Year 6 students in the Junior School will also visit the Middle School and will be involved in
information talks/orientations based in the Year 7 Homerooms. Teachers will also work together during the term to
plan classes for next year. Year 6 teachers will provide important information which will help to determine the
composition of Year 7 classes for 2013. This is intended to assist with the transition of Junior School students into
the Middle School next year.
ICAS COMPETITIONS
Middle School students obtained excellent results in the ICAS Competition held last term. All students in Middle
School participated in the Competitions, whereas most schools in Queensland entered only a selection of students.
Nevertheless, the average results were statistically higher than those at the equivalent year levels in Queensland.
Special congratulations to all Middle School students who performed well in the Competitions, especially the
students who gained High Distinctions, placing them well within the highest 1% in their respective year levels in
Queensland:
HEAD OF YEAR 8
Mrs J Brunckhorst
YEAR 8s SHOULD BE CONGRATULATED!
Grandparents and Godparents‟ Day was a wonderful showcase of their musical talents and presentation. They
contributed to the exemplary reputation of Somerville House by their attitude of dignity and service, and by the
courtesy shown to our guests. Many a tear trickled during the performances as proud relatives and friends of the
students marvelled at their abilities and composure.
During the service the girls remarked on the wonderful role models their grandparents and godparents provided,
highlighting the importance of positive lessons learnt through communication and socialisation across generations.
4

At this time when there is a high prevalence worldwide of stress
among young people these connections with older generations
provide stability and comfort. As an American author, Phyllis
Theroux, says, “We should all have one person who knows how to
bless us despite the evidence.”
We are looking forward to Term 4 when we will focus on team
building and leadership activities in preparation for the students‟
leadership roles in the Middle School. Each student in Year 9 will
have a responsibility to set an example, contribute to and direct the
positive culture in the Middle School next year.
Providing projects to practise leadership, the Year 8 Charity
Committee has organised to raise money for, The Guide Dog
Association and RSPCA, by holding a bake sale. The students
have decided to bake cupcakes and hold an animal cupcake icing
competition on Monday 15 October. We are looking forward to
judging the delectable creations before they are devoured and hope
that you enjoy watching the emerging fondant sculptures in your
kitchen prior to the event.
Parents of Year 8s: Please note that Year 8s are required to
support the athletes at the QGSSSA Track and Field Carnival on
Friday 19 October as per the email sent recently. Students are
required to arrive at School by 8.05am to leave Somerville House
by 8.20am. They will return to Somerville House by 4.00pm.
Further communication will be sent via email.
HEAD OF SENIOR SCHOOL
Ms G Harris
The enthusiasm exhibited by our students this week as they returned from their vacation demonstrates their love of
learning and desire to achieve their set goals. It is the final term for our Year 12 students and this enthusiasm
needs to be maintained for what will prove to be a very short, sharp term to ensure that final exit results are
reflective of their ability.
On Saturday our Year 12 students gathered at The Hilton Hotel to celebrate their final year of schooling. The
students looked splendid in their formal attire as did their partners. Mrs Bottomley and her Year 12 Formal
Committee are to be congratulated on the success of their planning and hard work that directly led to a most
enjoyable evening. Our dedicated Year 12 Tutor teachers along with members of the Executive were very proud to
be in attendance at such a significant event for our Year 12 students.
During the vacation period many of our staff continued to demonstrate their dedication to their profession. Our
Drama staff accompanied students on an educational tour and two of our English staff, Ms Joanna Gardiner and
Ms Virginia Ayliffe presented at the Australian Association of Teachers of English Conference in Sydney.
This Friday 12 October we will hold our Commemoration Day Service. Students will begin assembling at
11.45am for a 12 noon start. As this is a significant formal celebration for the School with many Old Girls as our
guests of honour, all students should be impeccably dressed in their formal uniform.
5

QGSSSA Track and Field event will be held next Friday 19 October. This is a compulsory event for all Year 11
students to attend. Details about this will be sent via email this week.
2013 LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
At the Year 11 Conference held on the final Monday and Tuesday of Term 3, the current Year 11 students
Olsen, Head of Year 11, and supported by Mrs Ball and many other dedicated staff forms part of our ongoing
leadership development program.
This preliminary voting provides the School with an indication from the students about whom they think are
students that can inspire and lead the student body next year. This week all students and staff in the Senior
DIRECTOR OF eLEARNING
Mr Ian Gray
HOLIDAY LEARNING AND KEEPING UP WITH IT ALL
A lot of learning happens during holiday breaks. Not all of it is academic. For many of our teachers who attended
or presented at professional development conferences the learning was, however, both academic and refreshing.
For example Junior School Music teacher, Ms Maree Hennessy, presented at the KMEIA National Conference in
Adelaide. Her presentation concerned ‘Good Timing’ Rhythm and Metre Activities for Primary and Middle Years.
How do we keep up with all of the learning that is occurring in our community and globally? How do we maintain
records? Twitter is one solution. For example, through SomerChat I regularly post suggestions for helping
students to improve their e-Learning. If you want to follow the School Twitter postings, register with Twitter then go
to the blue „t‟ symbol on our website. Please email me if you have any comments or suggestions:
COMMUNICATION AND ADMISSIONS
Mrs E Macpherson
BRISBANE OPEN HOUSE
Last Saturday 06 October, provided a wonderful opportunity to showcase three of the School‟s most historic
buildings – the Chambers, Cumbooquepa and the Chapel, to the wider community. The day was a great success
with visitors in awe of our magnificent buildings and their historic significance. The timing of this event was
challenging, being on the final Saturday of the spring vacation, which resulted in working with a skeleton volunteer
staff of Somerville House staff, parents, Old Girls and students. With only a handful of volunteers available from
each of these groups, we had our work cut out for us in doing justice to our buildings and the School‟s rich history.
Once again, however, we saw Team Somerville at work, albeit with a small representation from our community.
Special thanks to the students who donned their uniforms two days early, as our visitors made just as many
favourable comments about them, as they did about our buildings.
Business Directory
Make the most of your involvement in our School community and advertise your business in the Somerville House
2013 School Calendar and Business Directory.
Each year the Business Directory incorporates a full calendar of School activities and is distributed at the beginning of each school year to all
current families, staff and advertisers. Advertising your business in the 2013 Business Directory is a unique way to support the School and gain
exposure among the Somerville House community.
In addition to the pocket-sized booklet, the Business Directory will be available online through the School’s website, making it accessible to the
entire Somerville House community and visitors to the website.
The cost of an advertisement in the 2013 School Calendar and Business Directory is $150. Advertisers have a choice of two options including a
text-only advertisement or a pre-designed advertisement (see examples below).
In addition to our Business Directory, members of the Somerville House community also have the opportunity to advertise in our Connections
magazine which is distributed twice a year to more than 10,000 past and present families. A 20% price reduction is available for those who
advertise in both the Business Directory and Connections Magazine, lowering the Business Directory advertising price to $120 (see attached).
