THE PMSA INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC FESTIVAL 2012 - SUNDAY 21 OCTOBER and MONDAY 22 OCTOBER
The students selected for the PMSA Combined Schools Instrumental Music Festival come from Brisbane Boys'
College, Somerville House, Clayfield College and the Sunshine Coast Grammar School. The variety of students
attending will ensure that all of the ensembles will be of a very high standard. Each of the conductors working with
the groups is very experienced, well-credentialed and experts in their fields.
Festival Symphony Orchestra – Ms Loreta Fin (Somerville House – Director of Strings)
Festival Symphonic Band – Mr David Law (Redeemer Lutheran College, QYO – Director of Instrumental Music)
Guest Conductor Festival Big Band - Mr Charlie Simms (Sunshine Coast Grammar School – Head of
Instrumental Music)
During the Festival, students will attend rehearsals and tutorials, culminating in a Concert at 6.30pm on Monday 22
October. All activities will be hosted by Somerville House with the final Concert to be held in Harker Auditorium.
THE COMBINED JUNIOR SCHOOL MUSIC FESTIVAL CONCERT

Somerville House is hosting the Combined Junior School Music Festival 2012 on Friday 12 October at Somerville
House. Students selected are from Ascham School, Somerville House and Brisbane Boys College and they will
be rehearsing through the day and then presenting a wonderful concert in Harker Auditorium at 6.30pm. Entry is
free and all are welcome. Come and enjoy the wonderful work of the Junior School students from these three
schools.

The QGSSSA Netball Support Group Annual General Meeting will be held on Wednesday 17 October in the PE
classroom commencing at 3.45pm.

Queensland School Championships in Bundaberg 22 to 24 September 2012
Somerville House rowers performed exceptionally well at the Queensland School Championships in Bundaberg on
22 to 24 September. Somerville House won the first place on the medal tally table with 10 gold, 5 silver and 4
bronze medals.
The Year 9 rowers won gold medals in the single scull (Harriet Hudson), double scull (Madeleine Horridge and
Harriet Hudson) and quad scull (Harriet Hudson, Madeleine Horridge, Gabrielle Wiltshire, Georgina Gabrielli
and Margaret MacKenzie).
The Year 10 students came first (Susie Taylor) and second (Rebecca Apel) in the single scull; first (Rebecca
Apel and Susie Taylor) and third (Hannah Triscott and Miriam Ballinger) in the double scull. The crew of
Rebecca Apel, Susie Taylor, Miriam Ballinger, Hannah Triscott and Sophie Bates won gold medal in the Year
10 quad scull and silver in the Year 10 coxed four.
The Year 11 rowers won two gold, one silver and one bronze medals. Samantha Davidson and Bronte Wilson
came first in the double scull and second in the pair. The crew of Samantha Davidson, Bronte Wilson, Ellen
Ziesemer, Ellie McKill and Sophie Bates won gold medal in the quad scull and bronze medal in the coxed four.
The Year 12 rowers won gold (Julia Salisbury and Samantha Sheehan) and bronze (Elizabeth Murdoch and
Denai Rex) medals in the pair. The crew of Elizabeth Murdoch, Julia Salisbury, Samantha Sheehan, Denai
Rex and Sophie O’Brien came second in the quad scull. Samantha Sheehan won bronze medal in the open
single scull.
Three Somerville House students represented Brisbane in the Interregional events. Susie Taylor and Rebecca
Apel won gold medals in the Under 16 quad while Samantha Sheehan came second in the Open quad scull.
Many Somerville House rowers, apart from winning medals, made it to the finals of numerous events winning
fourth, fifth and sixth places in the finals. Congratulations to the Somerville House rowers, their coaches and
numerous supporters with excellent results at the State School Championships.
