THE PMSA INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC FESTIVAL 2012 - SUNDAY 21 OCTOBER and MONDAY 22 OCTOBER<br />

The students selected for <strong>the</strong> PMSA Combined Schools Instrumental Music Festival come from Brisbane Boys'<br />

College, <strong>Somerville</strong> <strong>House</strong>, Clayfield College and <strong>the</strong> Sunshine Coast Grammar School. The variety of students<br />

attending will ensure that all of <strong>the</strong> ensembles will be of a very high standard. Each of <strong>the</strong> conductors working with<br />

<strong>the</strong> groups is very experienced, well-credentialed and experts in <strong>the</strong>ir fields.<br />

Festival Symphony Orchestra – Ms Loreta Fin (<strong>Somerville</strong> <strong>House</strong> – Director of Strings)<br />

Festival Symphonic Band – Mr David Law (Redeemer Lu<strong>the</strong>ran College, QYO – Director of Instrumental Music)<br />

Guest Conductor Festival Big Band - Mr Charlie Simms (Sunshine Coast Grammar School – Head of<br />

Instrumental Music)<br />

During <strong>the</strong> Festival, students will attend rehearsals and tutorials, culminating in a Concert at 6.30pm on Monday 22<br />

October. All activities will be hosted by <strong>Somerville</strong> <strong>House</strong> with <strong>the</strong> final Concert to be held in Harker Auditorium.<br />

THE COMBINED JUNIOR SCHOOL MUSIC FESTIVAL CONCERT<br />

6.30PM FRIDAY 12 OCTOBER – HARKER AUDITORIUM<br />

<strong>Somerville</strong> <strong>House</strong> is hosting <strong>the</strong> Combined Junior School Music Festival 2012 on Friday 12 October at <strong>Somerville</strong><br />

<strong>House</strong>. Students selected are from Ascham School, <strong>Somerville</strong> <strong>House</strong> and Brisbane Boys College and <strong>the</strong>y will<br />

be rehearsing through <strong>the</strong> day and <strong>the</strong>n presenting a wonderful concert in Harker Auditorium at 6.30pm. Entry is<br />

free and all are welcome. Come and enjoy <strong>the</strong> wonderful work of <strong>the</strong> Junior School students from <strong>the</strong>se three<br />

schools.<br />

The QGSSSA Netball Support Group Annual General Meeting will be held on Wednesday 17 October in <strong>the</strong> PE<br />

classroom commencing at 3.45pm.<br />

Queensland School Championships in Bundaberg 22 to 24 September 2012<br />

<strong>Somerville</strong> <strong>House</strong> rowers performed exceptionally well at <strong>the</strong> Queensland School Championships in Bundaberg on<br />

22 to 24 September. <strong>Somerville</strong> <strong>House</strong> won <strong>the</strong> first place on <strong>the</strong> medal tally table with 10 gold, 5 silver and 4<br />

bronze medals.<br />

The Year 9 rowers won gold medals in <strong>the</strong> single scull (Harriet Hudson), double scull (Madeleine Horridge and<br />

Harriet Hudson) and quad scull (Harriet Hudson, Madeleine Horridge, Gabrielle Wiltshire, Georgina Gabrielli<br />

and Margaret MacKenzie).<br />

The Year 10 students came first (Susie Taylor) and second (Rebecca Apel) in <strong>the</strong> single scull; first (Rebecca<br />

Apel and Susie Taylor) and third (Hannah Triscott and Miriam Ballinger) in <strong>the</strong> double scull. The crew of<br />

Rebecca Apel, Susie Taylor, Miriam Ballinger, Hannah Triscott and Sophie Bates won gold medal in <strong>the</strong> Year<br />

10 quad scull and silver in <strong>the</strong> Year 10 coxed four.<br />

The Year 11 rowers won two gold, one silver and one bronze medals. Samantha Davidson and Bronte Wilson<br />

came first in <strong>the</strong> double scull and second in <strong>the</strong> pair. The crew of Samantha Davidson, Bronte Wilson, Ellen<br />

Ziesemer, Ellie McKill and Sophie Bates won gold medal in <strong>the</strong> quad scull and bronze medal in <strong>the</strong> coxed four.<br />

The Year 12 rowers won gold (Julia Salisbury and Samantha Sheehan) and bronze (Elizabeth Murdoch and<br />

Denai Rex) medals in <strong>the</strong> pair. The crew of Elizabeth Murdoch, Julia Salisbury, Samantha Sheehan, Denai<br />

Rex and Sophie O’Brien came second in <strong>the</strong> quad scull. Samantha Sheehan won bronze medal in <strong>the</strong> open<br />

single scull.<br />

Three <strong>Somerville</strong> <strong>House</strong> students represented Brisbane in <strong>the</strong> Interregional events. Susie Taylor and Rebecca<br />

Apel won gold medals in <strong>the</strong> Under 16 quad while Samantha Sheehan came second in <strong>the</strong> Open quad scull.<br />

Many <strong>Somerville</strong> <strong>House</strong> rowers, apart from winning medals, made it to <strong>the</strong> finals of numerous events winning<br />

fourth, fifth and sixth places in <strong>the</strong> finals. Congratulations to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Somerville</strong> <strong>House</strong> rowers, <strong>the</strong>ir coaches and<br />

numerous supporters with excellent results at <strong>the</strong> State School Championships.<br />
