COMMUNICATION AND ADMISSIONS Mrs E Macpherson BRISBANE OPEN HOUSE Last Saturday 06 October, provided a wonderful opportunity to showcase three of the School‟s most historic buildings – the Chambers, Cumbooquepa and the Chapel, to the wider community. The day was a great success with visitors in awe of our magnificent buildings and their historic significance. The timing of this event was challenging, being on the final Saturday of the spring vacation, which resulted in working with a skeleton volunteer staff of Somerville House staff, parents, Old Girls and students. With only a handful of volunteers available from each of these groups, we had our work cut out for us in doing justice to our buildings and the School‟s rich history. Once again, however, we saw Team Somerville at work, albeit with a small representation from our community. Special thanks to the students who donned their uniforms two days early, as our visitors made just as many favourable comments about them, as they did about our buildings. WELCOMING BACK OUR PAST MOTHERS Miss N Claut, Community Relations Officer All Somerville House Past Mothers are invited to attend a Past Mothers‟ Chapel Service and Luncheon to be held at the School on Wednesday 24 October 2012. Catch up with other mothers of Somerville House students as you gather for Chapel, enjoy a delicious luncheon and view how the campus has changed since your daughters finished school. Form a table or let us seat you with other Past Mothers. Chapel will commence at 11.00am followed by welcome drinks and lunch in Cumbooquepa from 11.30am. THANK YOU TO DAY PARENTS FUNCTION Last Sunday the Chamber Room was abuzz as more than 100 boarding and day parents came together to acknowledge day parents for their support at the Boarders‟ Thank You to Day Parents Function. This function is a favourite on the Boarding Calendar and provides an opportunity to celebrate Boarding at Somerville House and acknowledge the contribution of day parents who have supported our Boarders throughout 2012. Thank you to the Boarders‟ Support Group and P&F who contributed to this annual function. STUDENT COUNSELLOR Mrs J Cowen RELEASE OF 2012 YEAR 12 RESULTS All results contributing to the Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) and OPs and FPs will be available in students‟ learning accounts on the Student Connect website from 9.00am on Saturday 15 December 2012 - https://studentconnect.qsa.qld.edu.au Students must know their Learner Unique Identifier (LUI) and password to log in and check their results. Students will be able to access their results more quickly if they have previously activated their learning account. Students will receive their Senior Education Profile in the mail from Monday 17 December 2012. Profile contents depend on student participation and results, and will be made up of one or more of the following documents: QCE, Tertiary Entrance Statement, Senior Statement, and Queensland Certificate of Individual Achievement. UQ ICT ENABLING SCHOLARSHIP These Scholarships, to the value of $3000 each, are awarded to students based on their Year 12 results. WILLIAM BLUE COLLEGE OF HOSPITALITY SCHOLARSHIP The 2013 scholarship is worth over $35,000. Students are required to submit an application form and finalists will be invited to attend a two-day workshop to be held at William Blue in the first week of October. One full scholarship will be awarded to a student who shows strong leadership skills, is passionate about hospitality and has a keen interest in establishing a career in the industry. HAWKER SCHOLARSHIP The Charles Allan Seymour Hawker Scholarship Trust Fund was established in memory of Charles Allan Seymour Hawker, an Australian scholar, soldier, pastoralist and statesman. The scholarships are tenable at one of the following Universities and affiliated Colleges: The Australian National University – Burgmann College The Flinders University of South Australia – St Mark‟s College The University of Adelaide – St Mark‟s College The University of Adelaide – Roseworthy Campus The University of Cambridge – Trinity College The University of New England – Robb College The University of South Australia – St Mark‟s College The Marcus Oldham College Preference will be given to applicants with avowed aspirations to enter actively into the Australian political field, public affairs, community service or any other such activity considered beneficial to Australia. Applications open 10 December and close 04 January 2013. Details: http://www.hawkerscholarship.org/ AUSTRALIAN ROBERTSON SCHOLARS PROGRAM Each year one Australian student is selected for the unique opportunity to complete a four-year undergraduate degree at two of the US‟ leading academic institutions, Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The scholarship provides for full tuition fees, accommodation expenses and other costs associated with undertaking a degree abroad, and gives recipients the opportunity to participate in summer programs. UQ SCHOLARSHIPS FOR ECONOMICS STUDENTS The Year 12 domestic Australian scholarship and the Year 12 onshore international scholarship are open to students currently completing Year 12 in Australia. The Year 12 indigenous scholarship is open to Aboriginal or Torres Strait Island students currently completing Year 12, or who have completed a gap year during 2012. To be eligible, students must apply by the closing date and be accepted into the Bachelor of Economics at UQ for 2013. Applications close Monday 19 November 2012.
