SOMERFARE TUCKSHOP NEWS TERM 4, 2012 Somerfare is ready for Term 4 with our new Smart Choices menu. Somerfare offers a range of healthy fresh foods and to encourage healthy eating and to help make the choice easy, the latest Somerfare menu (attached to the end of this newsletter) has highlighted green and amber items in compliance with Smart Choices. You will see several changes on the menu, including the removal of red items and a significant reduction in the number of amber items offered. Some of the new green items include, half serve lavash, Mediterranean rice salad, the introduction of two new meals - four nuggets with vegetable sticks or two falafels with vegetable sticks. In response to student feedback, Somerfare now offers new look Veggie Sticks and Hommus, sold separately to replace the old Crunch & Dip. SOMERFARE SPECIALS New homemade specials for this term are Ham & Pineapple or Vegetarian Supreme Pizza on Wednesdays and Beef or Vegetarian Burgers on Thursdays - both of these are LUNCH ONLY. The other specials for the week remain the same - Sushi on Mondays; everyone's favourite Tuesday Toasties; and Friday the ever popular Sushi and Vietnamese rolls. Soups, Samosas and Hot Chocolates are no longer available, but will return in the winter terms in 2013! Please note that the Flexischools menu also reflects these changes. ONLINE ORDERING WITH FLEXISCHOOLS If you have not already done so, it is not too late to register with FLEXISCHOOLS to access Somerfare’s ONLINE ORDERING system. It is very straight forward and will only take a few minutes. All menu items are on there - with the Smart Choices indicators - and you can even order in advance or place a standing order for the term. It is a more efficient system for everyone and is quick and easy to use. Take the worry out of writing a bag and finding the right change. Go online! Note that orders must be placed before 8.30am. For more information please go to www.flexischools.com.au. Paper bag orders are still accepted over the counter. Morning tea must be in before school, and lunch can be in before school or at morning tea time. Please remember to write your name, class and lunch or morning tea on your bag. IOUs Please note that Somerfare NO LONGER offers IOUs. Students will need to ensure they have money with them when purchasing over the counter or when placing an order over the counter. SOMERFARE JUNIOR SCHOOL RULES Just a reminder that Junior School students (Years Prep to 6) are NOT permitted at Somerfare at morning tea or before 8.00am. They are permitted ONLY after second bell at lunch time. Junior School students must purchase their morning tea and lunch by placing an order. Remember, ordering online is easy and can be done well in advance. Paper bag orders can be handed in over the counter before school or placed in the box provided at the Junior School Reception before 9:00am. VOLUNTEERS Although there are only eight weeks in Term 4, it is never too late to jump on a Tuckshop team and help out. It is very flexible, we ask for only one day per month and you can come for a couple of hours or stay for the day. Either way your help is very valuable to us as it helps the Tuckshop run smoothly and ensures that we get all our orders prepared in time for morning tea and lunch. We always need extra hands to help us serve and your daughters‟ love to see you there. It is a lot of fun and a great way to meet other parents or catch up with friends. VOLUNTEER ROSTER 2013 We are currently filling the roster for 2013 and with many of our Year 12 mums leaving at the end of the year, we are calling for more people to join us. CO-CURRICULUM ACHIEVEMENTS Congratulations to the following students: - Renae Batten-Brines (9F) who, on 21 to 23 September, placed first in the floor exercise, third on uneven bars and was second overall.at the Women‟s Artistic Gymnastics State Challenge for the Queensland Team. - Katherine Tronson (11M) who competed at the Queensland Ice Skating Championships and received a silver medal in her level. She will now be in the Queensland team competing at National level in December this year. - Olivia Munro (4A) who has been accepted into the Interstate Training Program of the Australian Ballet School. The Australian Ballet School has about 250 students across four levels (ages 9 to 14) in this training program. DIRECTOR OF CO-CURRICULAR MUSIC Mr S Williams SOMERVILLE HOUSE SOLO INSTRUMENTAL AND VOCAL COMPETITION 2012 The Somerville House Solo Instrumental and Vocal Competition will be held in the Music Department on Sunday 14 October with the Prize Winners‟ Concert on Monday 29 October. The competition is open to all Somerville House instrumental (including piano) and vocal students whether learning at school or externally. We look forward to a wonderful Competition on Sunday and Concert on Monday 29 October. SENIOR MUSIC DINNER Years 9-12 Music students and their families are invited to join the Music Convenors, Prefects, Middle School Monitors and Music Staff to celebrate another successful year of musical achievement at our annual music dinner on Thursday 08 November at 6.00pm at the COTAH Restaurant in the Southbank Institute of Technology. Full details and booking forms are available in the Music Department Foyer. SOMERSOUNDS 2012 CD – A CELEBRATION OF JUNIOR SCHOOL MUSIC The Somersounds 2012 CD is a collection of wonderful music from our very own Junior School Music Ensembles and students. Choirs, Bands, String Ensembles and Class Items are all included on the CD, performing their very best work from 2012. This is a great way to celebrate our students‟ music-making through the year. All proceeds go to making 2013 an even better year for Music. I am sure this would make a lovely Christmas gift for family and friends. The CD cover is a wonderful painting by Jordan Lee in 6A. It is entitled 'Ode to William Robinson'. An order form is included in this Newsletter and also available in the Music Department Foyer. Please contact Ms Deb Gill for an order form or information regarding the CD at dgill@somerville.qld.edu.au INTERMEDIATE END OF YEAR AWARDS CONCERT – Wednesday 24 October 5.00pm The following ensembles will be performing at the Intermediate End of Year Concert (this list is not in performance order) Intermediate Concert Band, Junior Concert Band, Clarinet Choir, Guitar Ensemble, Flute Ensemble, Stradivari Strings, Cantamus/Cantilena, Junior Percussion Ensemble, Amadeus Strings. Students are offered a pre-concert early dinner from 3.30pm-4.15pm. MUSICFEST 2012 - STRINGS This term, Somerville House String Ensembles will be entering the Music Fest Competition, the biggest school competition in the southern hemisphere. Please keep the following dates free. Notes with specific details will be forwarded shortly. It is vital that the students attend all rehearsals punctually, leading up to the competition. Somerville Strings and Amadeus Strings will be transported by bus to and from the competition. Departing at 3.15pm and returning to Vulture St at approximately 6.15pm. Please return your permission slips.
