LIBRARY NEWS
BOOK WEEK MONDAY 19 AUGUST - FRIDAY 23 AUGUST Theme – ‘WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE!’
Where The Wild Things Are is now 50 years old!
It is hard to believe, but it has been 50 years since Max, Maurice Sendak’s little adventurer sailed across the years to
the land of the Wild Things.
Maurice Sendak, who passed away last year at 83, created a timeless children’s classic that has entertained generations
of young readers. Winning the 1964 Caldecott Medal for the Most Distinguished Picture Book of the Year, the
book has since been adapted in film, opera and on stage.
To help celebrate this fantastic book and occasion, this year’s Book Week festivities and activities will be centered on
this story.
BOOK WEEK PARADE
A highlight of Book Week is The Book Week Parade, which will be held on Wednesday 21 August at morning assembly.
The children are welcomed to come dressed as any book character of their choice.
So start planning your costumes. If you would like to focus on the theme of ‘Where The Wild Things Are’; we have a
few copies of the book in the library to assist with ideas. Or you could just as easily search the story
and images on the internet. Remember the internet is full of Book Week ideas and images. Some
other ‘Wild Things’ ideas are, wild jungle animals and wild birds, people in the wild, for example trekkers
in the jungle or the snow. Bikers are also considered wild and free. Let your imagination run
wild! I am looking forward to seeing a whole school of Book Characters parading.
PREMIER’S READING CHALLENGE NEWS
Our giraffe in the corridor is filling up with the super stars who have finished the Premier’s Reading
challenge. The finishing date for the challenge is Thursday 12 September,
Please check your child’s name on the PRC site to ensure correct spelling, so there are no mistakes on their certificate
and their published name in The Age lift out.
HOOPTIME
Senior Hooptime took place at MSAC on Tuesday 23 July. All the Year 5 and 6 students competed against other
schools in a fun and friendly environment. The OLGC students displayed great sportsmanship and they all worked
well within their teams. We had 8 teams competing, 3 rookie teams, 3 future star teams, an all boy and an all girl star
team.
There was a grand final for each pool. We had four teams in the finals, but only two all star teams competed in the
Grand Final. The all girls won and will go through to the next stage later in the year. Thanks to all teachers and parents
for coaching, and to Mrs Barry and Jo Ellingworth for organizing this event.
INTERSCHOOL NETBALL
On Wednesday 24 July, a Year 5/6 mixed netball team, Emma Fitt, Annie Purcell, Jacque Raftopoulos, Matt Rigo,
Sara Waldner, Long Tran, Eloise de Rauch and Sophie O’Connell attended the Division Winter Sports Netball Final.
We played against St James and Orchard Grove. Unfortunately we lost both games 15-9 and 18-8.
The team showed great sportsmanship and persistence during two very hard games. Thank you to Megan Domain
and Marie-Ann Fitt for driving and supporting the teams on the day.
