HENRYSTREET SETTLEMENT

THECENTEROF IT ALL
Since 1893 the Henry Street Settlement has been
the center of artistic excellence on Manhattan’s
Lower East Side. Our founder, Lillian Wald, believed
everyone should have access to the arts and
created opportunities for people of all ages and
backgrounds to benefit from live performances,
exhibitions, and training in a wide range of artistic
disciplines. Some of the most adventurous artists
of the past century have trained, taught, or
performed at Henry Street, including John Cage,
Aaron Copland, Dizzy Gillespie, Martha Graham,
Alwin Nikolai, Jackson Pollack, Anna Sokolow, and
Orson Welles.
The Settlement’s Abrons Arts Center continues
to offer superb training programs for all ages
and skill levels in dance, music, theater, and the
visual arts. All classes are taught by experienced
teaching artists, and our students are provided
numerous opportunities to enhance their learning
by attending the professional performances
and exhibits offered in our theaters and galleries
throughout the year.
Explore this catalogue and you’ll discover a dynamic
array of arts training opportunities. Whether you’re
seeking professional enhancement, pre-professional
training, or simply looking to introduce an artform
to your child, you’ll find it here at the Abrons Arts
Center. Come be at the Center of it all!
MUSIC
MUSIC Alison Jones, Director
For over one hundred years, Henry Street
Settlement has introduced and trained
students in the joys of musical performance.
Our Music Program’s exciting curriculum
offers a wide range of musical styles,
including classical, jazz, Latin, rock, folk,
R&B, and hip hop.
All students 7 to 17 years of age, enrolled
in private or group classes are scheduled
for free weekly theory classes. Theory
classes teach the foundation and structure
of music, note reading, rhythm, sight
singing, pitch recognition, ear training and
music history. Theory is a required class.
Placement is by age, level, and ability.
Theory is optional for students 5 and 6
years and 18 and up.
Informal mini-recitals are held monthly.
Students gather in small groups, perform
and share their learning experiences
with each other, discuss the pieces and
the composers, and how feelings and
thoughts are expressed in the works. These
classes prepare students for recitals and
concerts, and help students gain confidence
in playing and singing. In addition,
participation in student performances and
attendance at Abrons Arts Center concerts
scheduled throughout the year expose
students to a wide variety of musical and
performance styles.
A meeting with the Music Director is
suggested for all perspective students,
regardless of age, so the best teacherstudent
match can be made. Registered
students may practice in designated studios
free of charge during the school year.
All classes listed are offered in both the
fall and spring semesters unless noted
differently. Each semester includes 16
classes, once a week (though semesters
run longer than 16 weeks to accommodate
holidays).
Instrument Rental:
Students may rent instruments from the
Music School for a nominal fee, subject to
availability. All students are required to pay
a deposit. Deposit fees vary according to
the instruments rented.
MUSIC
EARLY CHILDHOOD CLASSES
The Early Childhood program offers classes
for children ages 10 months–6 years.
Following the Dalcroze method, children are
gently taught listening skills, the difference
between imitation and originality; and
coordination and spatial concepts. Singing
is an important part of the program’s
curriculum. Storytelling and movement are
incorporated into the classes to make the
learning experience even more fun and
meaningful for the child. Puppets, scarves
and balls are used along with the children
playing basic percussion instruments.
SING ME A SONG
Charlie the Lion and his puppet friends sing
songs from around the world and invite the
children to move to the music. In addition,
storytelling is incorporated into the class
lessons to help stimulate visual, aural, and
mental sensors. The children play basic
percussion instruments such as small drums,
bells, and egg shakers to explore different
rhythms and sounds. This class is for both
child and parent (or supervising adult).
Ages 10 months–1.5 years:
Tuesdays, 9:30–10:15 am; $320 per semester
MUSIC MAKES ME SMILE
Singing, listening, and moving to music in
different moods help the children learn how
to express themselves. They also develop
muscular coordination and listening skills.
Basic percussion instruments such as small
drums, finger cymbals, and maracas are
played to explore simple rhythm patterns.
Popular children songs are learned for
singing and playing along with instruments.
Puppets, balls, and scarves add to the funmaking
in the class. This class is for both
child and parent (or supervising adult).
Ages 1.5–3 years: Tuesdays, 10:30–11:15 am
or Saturdays, 9:45–10:30 am; $320 per
semester
LOVING MUSIC
Listening and moving to music helps the
child understand spatial concepts and
improve muscular coordination. Singing and
playing basic percussion instruments such as
drums, sticks, cow bells, triangles, and wood
blocks are used to explore different rhythms.
Repertoire includes songs from around the
world and musical theater. The concept of
music notation is introduced in this class.
Children attend by themselves.
Ages 3–4 years
Tuesdays, 11:30 am–12:15 pm or
Saturdays, 10:45–11:30 am
$320 per semester
LET’S PLAY THEM ALL
Children learn the basics of playing various
instruments such as guitar, flutophone,
violin, keyboard and drums. As children
pick the one they like, they are gently
encouraged to continue learning it.
Ages 4–6
Fall Semester: Fridays, 5:45–6:30 pm or
Saturdays, 11:45 am–12:30 pm
Spring Semester: Fridays, 5–5:45 pm or
Saturdays, 10–10:45 am
$320 per semester
MUSIC
SUZUKI VIOLIN PROGRAM
The Suzuki learning method is a wonderful
way to introduce very young children to
music. From the beginning, students and
parents (or supervising adults) together
experience music making. Children take
one private and one group class per week
with an adult. In order to help the children
practice at home and reinforce what is
learned during the lessons, the adults are
required to attend a weekly group class
during the first year of study. An interview
with the Director and teacher is held prior
to enrollment in the program. Children
and adults may rent violins (subject to
availability) from the Music School at a
nominal cost. Inquire about fees.
Ages 3 and up (with one parent or
supervising adult)
Fees for New Students:
Fridays, 2–7 pm
ONE-ON-ONE INSTRUCTION
The best way to excel in vocal and
instrumental studies is by taking private
lessons with a teacher. The one-on-one
experience allows students to progress at
their own pace with individually designed
courses of study. Lessons are available in
piano; the string family: violin, viola, cello,
bass; the woodwind family: flute, oboe,
clarinet, bassoon, saxophone; the brass
family: trumpet, French horn, trombone; the
percussion family; voice; guitar; D.J.-ing;
music production; theory and composition.
Students who receive tuition assistance
are limited to private instruction in one
discipline. They may, however, also enroll in
group classes that are different from their
private instrumental or vocal studies.
Private Lessons (once a week):
Fees per semester
30 minute lesson: $400
45 minute lesson: $625
60 minute lesson: $800
MUSIC
GROUP INSTRUCTION
Students who prefer to learn with others
are invited to enroll in group classes.
Students are placed in appropriate classes
according to their age and level (beginning
to intermediate); we do not offer group
classes for advanced students. Classes
are limited in size to guarantee that all
students receive personalized attention;
those limits vary depending on factors such
as the instrument, room, and instruction
level. Group instruction is offered in piano
(keyboard), violin, guitar, percussion, voice,
DJ-ing and music production.
GROUP PIANO (KEYBOARD)
Students in group piano classes learn
on electric keyboards. The keyboard lab
has four Yamaha keyboards and one
teacher console. As the students progress,
several classes are given on pianos to
familiarize them with the touch and sound
of real pianos.
Ages 6–7
Level 1: Beginner
Fall Semester: Fridays, 3:30–4:15 pm
EARLY CHILDHOOD
CLASSES
DANCE
CREATIVE MOVEMENT
In this introduction to dance, young children
develop an understanding of the connection
between rhythm and music in relation to
movement, as well as an awareness and
control of their bodies. Children learn to
follow leaders, basic movement, listening
skills, and creative expression.
Ages 2–3: Thursdays, 9:15–10 am; $175
Ages 3–5: Thursdays, 10:15–11 am; $175
Ages 3–5: Saturdays, 9:15–10 am; $175
MUSIC
SING ME A SONG
Charlie the Lion and his puppet friends sing
songs from around the world and invite the
children to move to the music. In addition,
storytelling is incorporated into the class
lessons to help stimulate visual, aural, and
mental sensors. The children play basic
percussion instruments such as small drums,
bells, and egg shakers to explore different
rhythms and sounds. This class is for both
child and parent (or supervising adult).
MUSIC MAKES ME SMILE
Singing, listening, and moving to music in different
moods help the children learn how to
express themselves. They also develop muscular
coordination and listening skills. Basic
percussion instruments such as small drums,
finger cymbals, and maracas are played to
explore simple rhythm patterns. Popular children
songs are learned for singing and playing
along with instruments. This class is for
both child and parent (or supervising adult).
child understand spatial concepts and
improve muscular coordination. Singing and
playing basic percussion instruments such as
drums, sticks, cow bells, triangles, and wood
blocks are used to explore different rhythms.
Repertoire includes songs from around the
world and musical theater. Children attend
by themselves.
Saturdays, 10:45–11:30 am; $320 per semester
THEATER
CREATIVE DRAMATICS
