The league was moved up to CIF-Southern Section Division 1 status in the sport for the first time. The league had done very well
in Division 2 recently, especially La Canada. The Spartans had finished at least in third place in either boys or girls for seven
consecutive years.
Lopez admits that the Spartans' streak probably won't continue when the Division 1 finals are held tonight at Long Beach's
Belmont Plaza pool. The first race is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
"I hope we make the Top 8," he said. "But I told our kids we're not going to whine or complain about it. These are the facts."
La Canada, which won the league boys title and shared the girls title with San Marino and South Pasadena, qualified in seven
final events and six consolation events. San Marino, which was second to La Canada in the boys, qualified four in the finals and
three in the consolations.
The league still has an excellent chance at scoring individual victories. Reigning Division 2 champion Katy Campbell of La
Canada is one of the favorites in both the 200 and 500 freestyles.
Her better shot at winning is in the longer distance. Teammate
Christian Renfro is seeded third in the 200 free.
"It was the prelims; we're not going to show all of our cards," Lopez said.
La Canada's Brandon Nguyen and Garrett Chin are in the 200 individual medley finals. Bo Mattix is in the 100 backstroke finals
and the Spartans' 400 free relay team will swim for first place.
San Marino's Nicole Hau and Stephanie Samudro both qualified for the 100 butterfly final. Samudro also qualified fifth in the 100
breaststroke. Stephen To is in the boys 100 fly final.
Both of the league's 50 free champions are in the consolation final.
Temple City's Filip Dagkovich, who had a lifetime-best 20.99 in the league finals, needed to go even faster in the prelims to make
the finals. He went 21.18 and is seeded 10th. La Canada's Sarah Olson is also seeded 10th.
"The times were shocking," Lopez said of the sprints.
The Division 2 and 3 finals will be Saturday at Belmont Plaza.
Keppel is one of the favorites to win in Division 3, in both boys and girls. They begin at 10a.m. Division 2, which will feature the
Pacific and Prep leagues, is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
"If everything falls in place, we have a good shot," Keppel coach Ish Perez said. "We're looking forward to it."
The Aztecs won the division's girls title last year and the boys placed third.
