I get a lot of calls from people
saying their scope won't zero. I
ask them if it is shooting a tight
group or is it all over the target.
If it is a tight group, it's probably
a scope problem. More
times than not the mount was
installed at an incorrect angle.
The scope should be parallel to
the barrel. Not all barrels are
fit at the same angle. Some barrels
vary quite a bit. It depends
on the amount of lug engagement
the gunsmith fit the barrel
with. If the barrel is fit with
.055" lug engagement, the scope
must sit at a greater angle than
on a barrel with .040" lug engagement.
It is relatively easy
to check whether the scope is
installed correctly. Looking at
the right side of the pistol,
check the distance between the
barrel hood and scope bottom or
mount with dial calipers at
both ends of barrel hood. If it is
.150" from the barrel hood to
the scope at one point it should
remain within .010" along the
entire hood. Again, you need
the scope and the barrel to be
parallel.
If the person said the groups
are not consistent and the scope
won't zero but everything is fit
well, then another possibility
exists. I tell them to check to
see if the bullets are hitting the
compensator. You would not believe
how common this problem
is. Checking for this problem is
easy. First, clear the pistol and
double-check it. Jacketed bullets
will leave copper traces on
comp barrels that can be seen
ever so slightly. If you can see
copper traces, your bullets are
hitting your comp. Nowlin Custom
Mfg. makes a reamer that
will fix this problem. The
reamer pilots on the barrel to
align and oversize the comp's
exit holes with the correct
clearances. Your gunsmith or
one near you probably has this
tool, and it only takes a few
minutes to do the job. When
shooters call with this problem,
in most cases they have just
had to remove the comp from
the barrel for some reason, perhaps
to have the pistol refinished
or possibly because the
comp was beginning to turn or
loosen. Sometimes you get
lucky and it goes on just right.
However, if you have just removed
your comp and now your
gun won't zero, my first guess
would be that the comp is not
aligned properly.
Accuracy is not a luxury. It is
a necessity. The more accurate
your pistol is, the more confidence
you will have in it. To be
good at IPSC you must be confident
in your ability to hit
what you're aiming at. It's probably
a good idea to end each
practice session shooting the
best groups you can, and as
your confidence increases, so
will your skills.
