Are you ready for something<br />

completely different beyond<br />

Limited category? Would you<br />

like to shoot a match purely for<br />

fun, partake in a little history,<br />

and quickly rationalize why you<br />

shot worse than usual? Try a<br />

match with an old, completely<br />

stock handgun.<br />

Many competitors have other<br />

handgun interests besides practical<br />

shooting and may have a<br />

half-century-old pistol somewhere<br />

around the house. Perhaps<br />

a war souvenir or<br />

something passed down from a<br />

relative. If it has been properly<br />

cared for and hasn't been<br />

abused, such a gun may be fired<br />

in an IPSC match. This article<br />

will focus on WW <strong>II</strong> guns.<br />

Before going further, I must<br />

stress that if the gun isn't safe<br />

it shouldn't be fired. If it has<br />

considerable collector value,<br />

don't jeopardize it by taking it<br />

to a match. Besides, someone<br />

might scare you by offering to<br />

buy it for what it's worth. Let<br />

your conscience be your guide.<br />

Most guns are somewhere between<br />

unsafe and valuable and<br />

can be fired without causing<br />

any damage or loss of value.<br />

I am amazed at how many<br />

shooters don't know much<br />

about WW <strong>II</strong> handguns. Last<br />

year I shot four or five different<br />

WW <strong>II</strong> pistols at local matches,<br />

incorrectly thinking that most<br />

ROs would recognize a P38<br />

Walther or P08 Luger. Many<br />

did not know what a Remington<br />

Rand was, and thought a parkerized<br />

.45 was a Colt 1991A1 or<br />

Springfield offering. (Remington<br />

Rand, not associated with<br />

Remington Arms, made almost<br />

half of the 1.8 million .45s during<br />

WW <strong>II</strong>.)<br />

The WW <strong>II</strong> vintage guns you<br />

might try in an IPSC match<br />

will probably be chambered for<br />

.45 auto, 9mm or .38 Special.<br />
