Are you ready for something
completely different beyond
Limited category? Would you
like to shoot a match purely for
fun, partake in a little history,
and quickly rationalize why you
shot worse than usual? Try a
match with an old, completely
stock handgun.
Many competitors have other
handgun interests besides practical
shooting and may have a
half-century-old pistol somewhere
around the house. Perhaps
a war souvenir or
something passed down from a
relative. If it has been properly
cared for and hasn't been
abused, such a gun may be fired
in an IPSC match. This article
will focus on WW II guns.
Before going further, I must
stress that if the gun isn't safe
it shouldn't be fired. If it has
VINTAGE PRACTICAL SHOOTING
considerable collector value,
don't jeopardize it by taking it
to a match. Besides, someone
might scare you by offering to
buy it for what it's worth. Let
your conscience be your guide.
Most guns are somewhere between
unsafe and valuable and
can be fired without causing
any damage or loss of value.
I am amazed at how many
shooters don't know much
about WW II handguns. Last
year I shot four or five different
WW II pistols at local matches,
incorrectly thinking that most
ROs would recognize a P38
Walther or P08 Luger. Many
did not know what a Remington
Rand was, and thought a parkerized
.45 was a Colt 1991A1 or
Springfield offering. (Remington
Rand, not associated with
Remington Arms, made almost
half of the 1.8 million .45s during
WW II.)
The WW II vintage guns you
might try in an IPSC match
will probably be chambered for
.45 auto, 9mm or .38 Special.
