new gun control legislation.<br />
FBI and Justice Department<br />
figures show that fewer than<br />
one percent of homicides are<br />
committed with so-called "assault<br />
weapons."<br />
President Clinton's budget<br />
calls for a ban on all semi-automatic<br />
firearms, including hand-<br />
guns, rifles and shotguns.<br />
Please vote against and actively<br />
fight all gun control legislation,<br />
including any "health<br />
care" taxes on ammunition.<br />
Be sure to add a line for the individuals<br />
signature, both signed and<br />
printed, and their addresses. If you<br />
need the names and addresses of your<br />
congressman, call the USPSA office.<br />
■ PRESIDENT IS LYING<br />
The President of the United<br />
States is lying to gun owners<br />
and to the American people<br />
about an 'assault weapons'<br />
problem that does not exist.<br />
So-called 'assault weapons'<br />
are nothing more than semiautomatic<br />
civilian versions of<br />
selective-fire, full-auto, military<br />
assault rifles and submachine<br />
guns. In spite of their<br />
threatening appearance, these<br />
firearms are no more lethal<br />
than any other semi-automatic<br />
rifle or handgun. 'Assault<br />
weapons' are being arbitrarily<br />
banned simply because they<br />
look scary to many people, and<br />
this conveniently serves the<br />
purposes of the ban-the-gun<br />
lynch mob.<br />
The California'assault weapons'<br />
ban, for example, banned<br />
Colt's AR-15, which has a black<br />
plastic stock, and looks like the<br />
Army's M-16, but not the Ruger<br />
Mini-14, which has a nice<br />
wooden stock and is sold as a<br />
carbine.<br />
Yet, both rifles fire the same<br />
5.56mm NATO/.223 Remington<br />
cartridge, both can hold 20-<br />
round magazines, and both<br />
have the same rate of fire. More<br />
importantly, both firearms are<br />
very similar in performance<br />
and lethality to most semiautomatic<br />
hunting rifles not<br />
considered 'assault weapons' by<br />
the California law.<br />
The total number of people<br />
killed by legally owned 'assault<br />
weapons' in the last 10 years is<br />
statistically insignificant — al-<br />
