Founded in 1994, Operation Jump Start is a Long Beach community based non-profit program dedicated to assisting disadvantaged youth, ages 12-18, who show strong promise to succeed both academically and in life. Many of these students come from single parent, low-income, immigrant and refugee families. The primary goal of the program is to change the lives of these youths through education. Many of the students are first generation high school graduates, and all of them are first generation college entrants. According to the Editorial Projects in Education (EPE) Research Center, in the 2003-2004 school year only 63.5% of students graduated from high school. However, Operation Jump Start graduates defy the odds: 100% graduate from high school 98% attend college immediately after high school 81% of the college entrants attend a four-year college or university Operation Jump Start matches each student with a volunteer adult mentor who provides them with a powerful example of professional and social opportunities available to the collegeeducated. The five-year relationship with the same mentor is a significant factor in the student’s success. While the overall program gives the student skills, mentors provide them with role models. Mentors provide over 360 hours of dedicated time to each vulnerable child and crucial long-term support. These are students from difficult backgrounds who are finally being given a chance to achieve their educational goals and build better futures for themselves, their families, and the community. The Long Beach Police Officers Association has proudly supported Operation Jump Start for the last six years. We wish to recognize and thank Lieutenant Ty Hatfield who sits on their Detective Songcheak Ier and his mentee board of directors, and Detective Songcheak Ier who has volunteered as a mentor for the last year. The neighborhood around Los Cerritos Park in North Division celebrated the 4 th of July with a spectacular street parade that concluded with a large family-style picnic at the park.The annual event draws hundreds of local residents together to celebrate the national holiday. The Long Beach Police Officers Association brought our barbeque to the event and cooked 1500 hot dogs for the crowd. As soon as the parade ended, the park’s grassy fields went from empty to packed. Numerous people walked up to shake hands and express their thanks. We specifically want to thank our honoraries, retirees, and volunteers who showed up for a couple of hours to cook and wrap the hot dogs. Involvement in positive community events such as this build trust and friendly cooperation between the Association and our neighborhoods. On Saturday, June 12 th , the Long Beach Police Officers Association proudly sponsored the California Special Olympics at Cal State Long Beach. We towed the POA barbeque to our designated spot near the Pyramid. Over the course of several hours, the POA served 1000 hot dogs and hamburgers to the Special Olympic athletes and their family members. We extend a special thanks to Detective Stephanie Hall, PSA Kim Cloughesy, and retired Officers Cindy Orel and Steve Ditmars who joined several POA Directors at the event. On Saturday, June 26 th , the West Eastside Community Association (WESCA) sponsored a Summer Kickoff event at Orizaba Park. The event included music, a mobile skateboard park, bouncers for the children, and other family fun activities. The Long Beach Police Officers Association was happy to respond with the barbeque to cook hot dogs for the families. Officer Scott Miller and PSS Kym Cloughesy joined POA Directors Tom Keleher, Jack Dial, and Jim Foster in cooking and preparing approximately 700 hot dogs during the lunch hour. We also thank 4 th District Council Member Patrick O’Donnell and WESCA President Jan Ward for their continued support of the Long Beach POA. RAP SHEET 31
