On June 23 rd , Sergeant Tom Marcoux was honored as the Long Beach Police Department 2009 Sworn Employee of the Year. During 2009, Motor Sergeant Marcoux distinguished himself by skillfully and professionally planning and executing complex traffic safety support operation for nearly every high profile event in the City, including all parades, the Fourth of July, the Long Beach Marathon, the Gay Pride Festival, Sea Fest, and the Long Beach Grand Prix. He also regularly oversees the DUI, driver’s license, and seat belt compliance checkpoints at high-risk locations in the City. As the supervisor of the Traffic Section, Sergeant Marcoux wrote a number of successful grant applications to the California Office of Traffic Safety, which totaled over $1.5 million. The funding from these grants has supported proactive enforcement programs to combat driving under the influence and promote both pedestrian and bicycle safety. Sergeant Marcoux recently coordinated a successful traffic safety operation in the Port of Long Beach focused on truck traffic, which helped to ensure the vehicles leaving the Port were in compliance with mandatory State safety requirements. Sergeant Marcoux also helped to integrate and supervise the new Impact Motors team. These officers are part of a proactive force funded by Proposition H oil production tax revenues. They specifically target areas of high gang and violent crime activity. The success of this effort has been widely acknowledged and has proven to be a very effective force multiplier. During his career, Sergeant Marcoux has worked in Patrol, Metro, SWAT, Narcotics, Internal Affairs, and Special Events. His strong command presence and competent police skills earned him the well-deserved respect of his peers and supervisors. As both a Sergeant and an acting Lieutenant, he has proven himself to be a dynamic and effective supervisor. The Long Beach Police Officers Association thanks Sergeant Marcoux for his outstanding service to the Police Department and the community. On Wednesday, June 23 rd , the Long Beach Police Department proudly hosted its 42 nd Annual Awards Ceremony at the Carpenter Center located at Cal State Long Beach. The event gives us an opportunity to thank the men and women of our department who have distinguished themselves with extraordinary service over the last calendar year. Our good friend Bruce MacRae hosted the event, and Fox 11 News reporters Christine Devine and Tony Valdez narrated the ceremony.
