On June 25 th , the City of Newport Beach officially announced they had chosen Long Beach Police Commander Jay Johnson to become their next Chief of Police. City Manager Dave Kiff stated, “Commander Johnson went through a rigorous recruitment process, including at least five separate interviews. In each phase of the process, Commander Johnson stood out as a candidate with great integrity, professionalism, diverse experience, a strong education, and an excellent sense of our community." Commander Johnson's hiring marked the second time in less than a decade that the Newport Beach Police Department has seen something they liked in LBPD leadership. Johnson will take over the chief’s position from former LBPD Chief Robert Luman, who served as interim chief in Newport after retiring from Long Beach in 2006. Commander Johnson is a 23- year veteran of the Long Beach Police Department, and he was just recently assigned to the Emergency Operations Division after serving as South Division commander since 2004. During his tenure, Commander Johnson also worked Patrol, Narcotics, Felony Detail, Gang Enforcement, Community Policing Team, and Special Enforcement Section. Commander Johnson’s career includes 12 years on the SWAT team in the roles of team member, team leader, tactical sergeant and lieutenant. He has a master’s degree in public administration from Cal State Long Beach, and he is a graduate of the FBI National Academy. He has been recognized for outstanding service and work performance more than 75 times during the past two decades. Despite his promotion, Commander Johnson will always have a special bond with Long Beach. His two brothers (Commander Jeff Johnson and Officer Joel Johnson) continue to work at the department, and he leaves behind countless friends who consider themselves blessed to have worked around such a great role model. The Long Beach Police Officers Association wishes Chief Johnson and his family the very best, and we are confident the people of Newport Beach will be highly impressed with their newest chief.
