data for 2006 or the most recent data made available by different Brazilian institutions, as
well as by FIESC economic and industrial policy unit.
In this publication, the reader finds detailed statistics on production, sales, imports and
exports of Santa Catarina industry. Moreover, Santa Catarina Strategic Information embraces
the evolution of figures about sectors which supply the industry (agricultural and
animal production, extractive industry, electric energy generation and distribution, and
transportation infrastructure) with materials or services. Moreover, you find here general
information on Santa Catarina geography and economy: population, trade, tax collection,
Industrial Santa Catarina
Santa Catarina has an outstanding industrial park in Brazil. Santa Catarina’s transformation
industry ranks fourth in the country in number of companies, and fifth in number of
employees. The food sector is the main employer, followed by apparel and textile sectors.
Santa Catarina has the seventh highest GDP in Brazil: R$70.2 billion in 2004.
Preliminary estimates for 2005 are R$83.9 billion. The secondary sector is responsible for
52%, services, for 34%, and the primary sector, for 14%. The share of the transformation
industry in the secondary sector is 42%.
Our industrial economy is characterized by its concentration in different hubs, which gives
the states different regions a balanced development pattern: ceramic, coal, and disposable
plastics hubs in the south, food hub in the west, textile and crystal hubs in the Itajaí River
Valley, metal mechanic and furniture hubs in the north, timber hub in the Highlands and
technology around the Capital City.
Despite this regional concentration, many counties have been making different choices,
which leads to the strengthening of different sectors, such as the apparel industry in the
north and in the south, and furniture in the west.
There are many important industries in Santa Catarina, some of which are internationally
renowned. We lead the Latin American household appliances (white goods), machinery
for the timber industry, starting drivers, automotive pulleys and bearings, crochet threads,
elastic bands, and jersey shirts markets. In addition, Santa Catarina features Latin America’s
largest independent foundry. It also outstands as the world’s largest producer of hermetic
compressors, dental instruments, beer mugs, and two-ply toilet paper. The state is also
considered the second main producer of jersey clothing. We are the largest swine and
fish producers and the second chicken producers in Brazil. We are leaders in the domestic
production of trophies and plaques, telephone exchanges, air compressors, forged and
fire galvanized electrical hardware for electric energy, cable TV and telephony distribution,
pine doors and jambs, bicycle parts, plastic packaging for fertilizers, corrugated cardboard
packaging, recycled PET and polyethylene ropes and strings, processes food (poultry and
pork), telephone directory assistance software, casting technology for the automotive
industry, cast iron connections for hydraulic and gas networks, machinery for the wood
sector, sportswear, mainly surfware, and exhaust replacement.
The largest Brazilian distributor of disposable medical and hospital products is located in
Santa Catarina. The state stands out for being the number one Brazilian state in the use of
the transformation industry installed capacity, which operates at an average of 83% of its
production capacity.
Santa Catarina is one of the main exporting states in Brazil. In 2006, we exported US$6
billion – 4.3% of total Brazilian exports -, which made Santa Catarina rank ninth amongst
