NCAA TOURNAMENT GAMES
March 1, 1995
ncaa division III first round
Binghamton 55
St. John Fisher 79
Rochester, N.Y. — Led by the underclassmen trio of Reagan Stevens,
Stephanie Rom and Cathy Mackin, BU earned the first-ever NCAA
tournament berth, men or women, in 49 years of Binghamton basketball.
The Colonials (19-8) received the sixth seed in the eight-team East Region,
and played an away game at third-seeded and undefeated St. John Fisher
(28-0). The Cardinals, the nation’s winningest Division III program, spoiled
BU’s post-season party early, however, shooting 62% in the first half to build a
49-23 margin. Fisher also enjoyed a significant edge from the free throw line,
canning 28-of-38 attempts on their home floor. Mackin led BU with 11 points,
while Stevens added 10.
Geneseo 71
Geneseo, N.Y. — The Colonials (21-7) earned the East Region’s sixth seed for the second straight year, thanks to a strong finish (10-2 to close out
the regular season). The team’s reward was an away-game rematch with conference-rival Geneseo, which had knocked off BU, 76-64, for the SUNYAC
championship four nights earlier. In this game, the teams were tied, 50-50, with 10 minutes left before the Knights used a 13-4 run to reinstate a lead they
would not relinquish. A young team featuring three starting underclassmen pulled to within four points with 1:22 left, but Geneseo held firm. Maryanne
Prendergast and Stephanie Rom each tallied 16 points for BU, which also received 15 points from Cathy Mackin. Potent scorers Reagan Stevens and
Alicia Koppenhoefer, who were averaging a combined 22 points per game, were held to a collective nine on 2-for-17 shooting.
ncaa division III first round
Ithaca 73
Binghamton 66
Binghamton, N.Y. — After clinching the program’s first-ever SUNYAC
Championship in its final year in the league, BU (23-4) earned the third seed in
the eight-team East Region, setting up a home NCAA first-round game against
the sixth-seeded Bombers. The junior trio of Stephanie Rom, Cathy Mackin
and Alicia Koppenhoefer had steered the Colonials to a national ranking of
25, and a perfect record in the West Gym. Against Ithaca, BU shot 54% in the
first half, but found itself tied, 31-31. In the second period, BU started to pull
away, building what seemed to be an insurmountable 16-point lead midway
through the half. Ithaca, however, rallied with five second-half three-pointers
— the final of which was part of a rare five-point play with 55 seconds left
that clinched the stunning comeback. In her final collegiate game, Reagan
Stevens scored 16 points with 10 rebounds, and Koppenhoefer and Karen
McClelland added 12 points apiece. Binghamton, which held the Bombers to
38% shooting on the game, committed 21 costly turnovers in suffering their
third-straight NCAA first-round exit.
