Now in its fourth decade of operation, America East<br />

has evolved into one of the most comprehensive NCAA<br />

Division I conferences with a commitment to broadbased,<br />

competitive athletics programs, complementing<br />

the academic integrity and missions of the member<br />

institutions.<br />

Progressive in its approach to its more than 3,400<br />

student-athletes, America East recognizes champions<br />

in each of its 20 sports: baseball, men’s and women’s<br />

basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, field hockey,<br />

men’s and women’s indoor track and field, men’s and<br />

women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s outdoor track<br />

and field, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and<br />

women’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s<br />

tennis, and women’s volleyball. America East also conducts<br />

the nation’s most comprehensive academic recognition<br />

program for student-athletes.<br />

With a geographic footprint covering the Mid-Atlantic<br />

to Northeast regions of the United States, America East<br />

strives to develop champions in academics, athletics and<br />

leadership at its nine member institutions: <strong>University</strong><br />

at Albany, <strong>Binghamton</strong> <strong>University</strong>, Boston <strong>University</strong>,<br />

<strong>University</strong> of Hartford, <strong>University</strong> of Maine, UMBC,<br />

<strong>University</strong> of New Hampshire, Stony Brook <strong>University</strong> and<br />

<strong>University</strong> of Vermont.<br />

Academics…<br />

• Vermont won its seventh-straight America East<br />

Academic Cup after its student-athletes registered a<br />

cumulative GPA of 3.17. Six of the nine America East<br />

schools had student-athletes with GPAs of 3.0 or better.<br />

• America East’s nearly 3,400 student-athletes set a<br />

new league record with a combined 3.07 grade-point<br />

average in 2010-11. More than half of the conference’s<br />

student-athletes were named to the Academic Honor<br />

Roll for maintaining GPAs of 3.0 or better.<br />

• <strong>Binghamton</strong> <strong>University</strong>’s Sven Vloedgraven (tennis) and<br />

<strong>University</strong> at Albany’s Nikki Branchini (lacrosse) were<br />

named 2010-11 America East Male and Female Scholar-<br />

Athletes of the Year, respectively.<br />

• Three schools (Boston U., New Hampshire, Vermont)<br />

ranked among the nation’s best in Graduation Success<br />

Rate (GSR), with scores of 94 or better. Nearly one-third<br />

of all America East teams had perfect GSR scores.<br />

• Thirty programs from America East schools received<br />

Academic Progress Rate (APR) public recognition<br />

awards from the NCAA for finishing among the top 10<br />

percent in the nation.<br />

• Seventeen student-athletes received a total of 19<br />

National Academic All-America honors.<br />

Athletics…<br />

• Every America East school won a conference<br />

championship or regular-season title for the first time<br />

since 2005-06.<br />

• Boston <strong>University</strong> won its sixth straight America East<br />

Stuart P. Haskell, Jr. Commissioner’s Cup and 11th<br />

overall to surpass Delaware for the most Cups in<br />

conference history.<br />

• Twenty-nine America East student-athletes earned<br />

All-America recognition, including one each in men’s<br />

basketball and men’s and women’s soccer, five in men’s<br />

lacrosse, two each in women’s lacrosse, baseball and<br />

field hockey and 15 in cross country/track & field.<br />

• America East was second among all men’s lacrosse<br />

automatic-qualifying conferences in RPI.<br />

• Albany was the final undefeated women’s lacrosse<br />

team in Division I, with an 18-0 record, before losing<br />

to national champion Northwestern in the NCAA<br />

quarterfinals.<br />

• UMBC defeated Princeton in the first round of the NCAA<br />

Men’s Soccer Championship, the eighth time in 10 years<br />

an America East team had advanced in the tournament.<br />

• Boston <strong>University</strong> had 13-straight shutouts, the second<br />

longest streak in NCAA women’s soccer history.<br />

• America East finished fourth in the field hockey RPI<br />

behind only the ACC, Big 10 and Big East and had two<br />

teams (Albany and Boston <strong>University</strong>) ranked in the<br />

final NFCA Top 20.<br />

• Stony Brook placed seventh as a team at the NCAA<br />

Women’s Cross Country Championship.<br />

• After winning its first America East baseball<br />

championship since 2006, Maine beat FIU in an NCAA<br />

Regional game to give America East an NCAA win in<br />

each of the last three seasons.<br />

• Sven Vloedgraven of <strong>Binghamton</strong> was selected to the<br />

NCAA Tennis Singles Championship for the secondstraight<br />

year. He is the only America East studentathlete<br />

to have played in the event.<br />

Leadership…<br />

• For the second straight year, America East partnered<br />

with Newman’s Own Foundation to encourage<br />

community service among students through the<br />

NOF Campus Community Challenge. Nine grants<br />

of $7,500 to $25,000 were awarded to honor and<br />

support student groups engaged in philanthropy and<br />

community service. In total, more than $100,000 was<br />

given to America East student groups. Top selections<br />

were: <strong>University</strong> at Albany, The Giving Circle ($25,000),<br />

<strong>Binghamton</strong> <strong>University</strong>, Boys and Girls Clubs ($15,000),<br />
