Buckingham Browne & Nichols, a coeducational day school in Cambridge, 

Massachusetts, was established in 1974 by the merger of two independent 

schools, the Buckingham School and the Browne & Nichols School, 

founded respectively in 1889 and 1883. Located on three campuses, we work 

as one school in the pursuit of excellence. We celebrate the diversity of our 

community, which enriches our daily experience. 

At BB&N we foster intellectual curiosity, critical thinking and a deep concern 

and respect for others. Our educational program, coordinated from Beginners 

through Grade Twelve, provides a rigorous core curriculum, taught in flexible 

and innovative ways. Students acquire the skills and discipline necessary for 

academic accomplishment and learn to reflect, take risks, and discover. 

The curriculum is strengthened by our commitment to a comprehensive 

program in the arts and athletics. In all of our experiences, both those within 

the School and those which use our urban location, we encourage self-reliance, 

knowledge of oneself and a capacity for leadership. 

The connections between our faculty and students are at the heart 

of our School. We ask all members of our community to be engaged leaders, 

compassionate individuals and productive citizens who live our school’s 

motto: “Honor, Scholarship, and Kindness.”

Dear Friends, 

With this Annual Report of Gifts, we thank you for your commitment to the School and celebrate 

the many accomplishments and programs your generosity has made possible. 

The past year has been one of numerous activities and accomplishments for our students and for the 

School. On the Upper School campus, September 2006 started with a new theater and a renovated 

and beautifully refurbished library. As the months went by, we watched from some choice observation 

spots (one of which was the Library!) as the new wing took shape. Outside the classroom building, 

the landscape was dominated by construction equipment forcing us to relocate (but not curtail) many 

academic and athletic activities. 

This September we proudly opened our doors to a project that reshapes our Upper School art, science 

and academic facilities and, with a focus on student and faculty spaces, enhances our commitment to 

strengthening connections among all members of the BB&N community. Between the new wing (recently 

named Renaissance Hall) and the new Student Commons we have, literally and figuratively, created a new 

heart for the campus. This would not have happened without your generous support of the early stages of 

the Opening Minds Campaign, which has now surpassed $46 million on our way to our $62 million goal. 

Even as BB&N depends on the Campaign to fund and shape the future through new facilities and an 

increased endowment, the School looks to the Annual Fund to support the people and programs that 

make BB&N the special place it is today. Classroom activities, field trips, student clubs, plays, musical 

events, art classes, athletic teams, away games, books in the libraries, professional development for the 

faculty, financial aid for our families—all these contribute to the fabric of our community and all are 

made possible by your generous support of the Annual Fund. Once again, we have broken a record for 

annual support by raising more than $2.2 million to support the ongoing operations of the School. With 

thanks to our donors, we applaud the many parent and alumni/ae volunteers who have worked to make 

this happen. 

At the core of BB&N is an extraordinary group of people—students, faculty, and staff—engaged in an 

exceptional educational program. In this report we profile some of the exciting new programs that graced 

our campuses this year, as well as some of the many accomplishments of our students and faculty. I 

hope you’ll agree that these are indicative of the vitality, 

engagement, and innovation you find in and out of our 

classrooms. Each profile and highlight brings to life the 

different ways in which minds and hearts are opened at this 

great School.

• Opening Minds Campaign tops $46.4 million 

in total support for endowment, capital projects, and annual 

giving at the end of the second year of the public phase of 

the Campaign. 

• Annual Fund receives an all-time record 

$2.2 million in operating support, including a record 

$614,617 in annual Fund gifts from alumni/ae. 

• $1 million Alumni/ae Challenge—to match all new 

gifts of $25,000 or more from new alumni/ae donors—nears 

completion, with commitments from 27 alumni/ae totaling 

$900,000. 

• Class of 2007 Senior Parents raise $1,041,851 for 

faculty endowment, annual gifts, and other capital projects. 

• Upper School Building and Renovation Project,

The BB&N Annual Fund exists to fill the gap between tuition 

dollars and the actual cost of educating each student. It is critical 

to balancing the School’s operating budget and guarantees the 

continued tradition of excellence that defines a BB&N education.

It’s one thing to boast a good location. It’s quite another to genuinely 

take advantage of it. This past year, Upper School Science Department 

Chair Leah Cataldo launched a program that squeezed great benefit out 

of BB&N’s closeness—both in miles and in relationships—to some of the 

planet’s brightest minds. 

The brand-new Contemporary Topics and Research in Science and 

Technology course gave four seniors deeply interested in science the chance 

to study their gaze on topics and issues under current investigation, from 

biotechnology advances to alternative energy sources to global warming. 

What turned a well-crafted course into a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, 

however, were the class’s visits to and from some of the region’s most 

esteemed scientists—some of whom were BB&N parents, some of whom 

were BB&N alumni, and all of whom gave the students firsthand exposure 

to the exciting research—from nanotechnologically structured spill-proof 

coatings for clothing to genetically engineered life-saving proteins—taking 

place in their laboratories. 

“The chance to step beyond classroom doors into a larger community as 

diverse and culturally and intellectually stimulating as Cambridge is a rare 

privilege for a student to have,” says Head of School Rebecca T. Upham. “It 

places these students and the School at the vanguard of science education.”

“Through the Eyes of Youth: 200 Years of US-Russia 

Relations” bicentennial essay competition for high 

school students in Russia and the United States. The 

competition, held in eight regions across Russia’s 11

BB&N’s Launch Project lived up to its name in its pilot year as several 

Lower School faculty members designed technology-based learning 

initiatives that sparked student engagement to new heights. 

Reading specialist Anne Mackay’s project was a perfect example, as she 

used a laptop computer and movie recording software to help BB&N 

kindergarten students discover the storytelling muse living inside 

their imaginations. The youngsters took Anansi stories from the Ashanti 

tribe of West Africa and retold them in their own words, with Mackay 

and kindergarten teachers helping them write scripts, build sets, and act 

out the reimagined stories while the cameras rolled. 

Mackay’s formal Launch proposal describes the project as “a multimodal, 

multi-sensory storytelling experience.” More simply stated, the 

end result was delightfully real: a collection of well-told colorful tales 

burned for posterity onto a DVD that brought the Lower School crowd 

to its feet at the premiere viewing, and copies of which now live in heavy 

rotation in each student’s home DVD player. 

And just as technology has helped kindle the excitement of learning 

at the Lower School, so too has the innovative success of the Launch 

Project encouraged BB&N to replicate the model across all three 

campuses this year.

The unsung heroes of the two-year cycle of Upper School renovation and 

new construction have been the faculty and students who survived, and 

even thrived, amidst the steady barrage of noise, dust, and distraction. So, it 

was an exciting moment earlier this year when two members of the BB&N 

community stepped over the caution tape to instill a student-designed visual 

stamp on the project. 

This synthesis of talent and opportunity was dreamed up by Drawing Teacher 

John Norton, who staged a competition that challenged BB&N students 

to design a signature “look” for one of the most visible components of the 

whole construction project: the stairwell that serves as the centerpiece of the 

dramatic new front entry to the Main Building. 

The winning entry sprang from the mind of one of BB&N’s most creative 

graphic artists: David Seliger ’08. Putting a playful twist on the whirly icons 

already established across the project by Centerbrook Architects, as well as 

the Opening Minds Campaign logo, Seliger transformed 17 unassuming steps 

into an engaging symbol of the energy, vitality, and connections that exist 

throughout the BB&N community. 

“As enjoyable as the 2-D design process was,” said Seliger as he and Norton 

toured the construction site in late May, “being able to touch my design cut 

from metal is far more gratifying. I’m definitely looking forward to the time 

when everyone I know at school will be using the staircase many times a day.”

Each year, projects come to the fore at BB&N that summon from students 

the three touchstone qualities that make up the School’s motto: Honor, 

Scholarship, and Kindness. He Dared to Dream—a documentary film 

produced last year by eight Middle Schoolers—was just such a project. 

Under the guidance of Middle School Arts Department Chair Libby 

Maclaren and in close collaboration with local filmmaker David 

Medzorian, the students interlaced period footage and audio with 

commentary shot at the Middle School to create a film focusing on the 

life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and documenting the civil rights 

movement from Rosa Park’s 1955 arrest to Dr. King’s 1968 assassination. 

“Dr. King lived his life using what he called the weapons of love and 

peace,” said Molly Davis ’11 in the film. “There was only a donkey and cart 

to carry his body at the end. But surrounding that donkey and cart were 

the hearts and souls of people all around the world who cried for an end 

to violence and justice for everyone.” 

The Middle Schoolers’ film was more than a 30-minute history lesson; it 

was also a testament to the power of young adults getting in touch with 

their hearts as well as their brains, engaging with difficult topics, and 

producing a compelling statement on themes that resonate as strongly 

today as they did 40 years ago: fairness and prejudice, kindness and 

cruelty, strength and frailty.

to Seattle, WA, to attend the People of Color 

Conference (PoCC) hosted by the National 

Association of Independent Schools. The 

conference brings together people of color for 

networking and support, as well as finding ways to 

build and sustain inclusive, diverse communities. 

In late November 2007, BB&N will be a host school 

for the PoCC held in Boston.

The Almy Society honors BB&N benefactors Charles and Elizabeth Almy who bequeathed their 

residence to the School. Membership in The Almy Society is offered to those who have arranged 

to leave a legacy gift to the School through their will, participated in the BB&N Gift Annuity 

Program, established a charitable trust, designated BB&N as a beneficiary of a retirement plan or 

life insurance policy, or arranged for a future gift of their home. We are indebted to this special

BB&N Faculty Compensation 


Income from BB&N’s general faculty compensation 

endowment is used to support 

the school’s faculty compensation budget. 

Class of 2001 Parents’ Faculty 

Compensation Fund 





These funds were established by parents of 

the Class of 2001, 2003, and 2004 to support 

BB&N’s faculty compensation budget. 

Two BB&N eighth graders achieved perfect scores 

in the Mathematical Association of America’s 

junior high school examination. The 25-question, 

45-minute multiple choice examination applies the 

concepts taught at the junior high level to a wide 

range of problems. 

New funds established in 2006-2007. 

The BB&n endowment, which had a market value of $45 million as of June 30, 2007, is 

comprised of more than 130 named and general endowed funds, the income from which 

supports approximately 5.5% of BB&n’s operating budget each year. 

established through both outright gifts and bequests by alumni/ae, parents, and friends 

with a vision for BB&n’s future, these funds provide the long-term financial support 

necessary to sustain many areas of the BB&n operating budget, from faculty compensation, 

professional development, and financial aid to academic and athletic programs. 

The following list describes many of BB&n’s current endowment funds and the areas of 

the budget they support. new funds created during 2006-2007 are highlighted below. 

The Class of 2007 Faculty 


This fund was established by parents in 

the Class of 2007 through their Senior 

Parents’ Gift campaign and will provide 

permanent endowment to support 

BB&N’s faculty compensation and 

professional development budget. 

John H. Etter Teaching Fund 

Established in honor of John H. Etter ’49, 

Director of Athletics for more than 40 

years, this fund supports the Director of 

Athletics position. 

The Legends Fund 

The Legends Fund was created in 2007 to 

recognize BB&N’s faculty “legends” upon 

their retirement and to honor their extraordinary 

commitment to the School during 

their many years of service. This fund 

provides permanent support to BB&N’s 

faculty endowment for compensation, 

professional development, and summer 

travel grants. 

Mary Newmann Faculty Compensation 

Fund 

Established in 2000 by current and former 

trustees of the Buckingham School, 

Browne & Nichols, and BB&N, this fund 

honors former Head of School Mary 

Newmann and supports the School’s 

general faculty compensation budget. 

Edwin H. B. Pratt Faculty Fund 

Established in 1975 through a bequest 

from the Edwin H. Baker Pratt Trust, this 

fund supports BB&N’s faculty compensation 

budget. 

Edwin and Aileen Pratt Faculty 

Development Fund 

This fund was established by members of 

the Edwin and Aileen Pratt Fund Committee 

in 1978 in recognition of the Pratts’ 

invaluable service to the School. The 

fund supports the moral and intellectual 

atmosphere at BB&N by providing for 

faculty compensation. 

Rudman Family Athletic Fund 

Established in 1984 by the Rudman 

family on the occasion of the 40th anniversary 

of Stanley and Dorothy Rudman 

P’66, ’70, GP’05 and redesignated in 

2003 by Jeffrey Rudman ‘66, this fund 

underwrites the salary of the boys’ football 

coach at BB&N and supports general 

expenses of the football and/or general 

athletic program.

Frances Ackerly Fund for Gender 

Studies 

Established in 1991 in honor of faculty 

emerita Frances Ackerly, this fund supports 

professional development for 

Middle School faculty to do research,

write, attend conferences, and educate 

the community on gender issues in 

education. 

Betsy Allen Fund for Lower School 

Special Initiatives 

Established in 2006 by a group of 

parents to honor Betsy Allen, a beloved 

member of the BB&N Lower School 

faculty for nearly 30 years, this fund 

provides support for specialists and other 

resources to train and educate Lower 

School teachers—particularly Morse 

Building (Beginner, Kindergarten, and 

Grade 1) teachers—on child development 

issues and other areas related to but 

outside of specific curricular topics. 














Enrichment Fund 

Established by parents in the Classes of 

1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1997, 

and 1998 during their senior year, these 

funds support BB&N’s general faculty 

professional development budget. 

Class of 1999 Faculty Development 

Fund 

Established by Class of 1999 students 

during their senior year, this fund supports 

BB&N’s general faculty development 

budget. 

Clifton Family Fund 

Established in 1987 by former trustee 

Roger Clifton P’86, this fund promotes 

programs for faculty that will expand their 

understanding of new points of view and 

encourage them to be more responsive 

and inclusive in their teaching. 

The Curhan-Pokross Fund to 

Promote Faculty Excellence 

Established by Prof. and Mrs. Ronald C. 

Curhan P’86, ’89 and David R. and Muriel 

Pokross GP’86, ’89, ’09 to encourage and 

promote faculty excellence in the Upper 

School, this fund provides training and 

professional development opportunities 

for Upper School faculty. 

Educational Technology 


Gifts designated for educational technology 

endowment provide support for 

BB&N’s educational technology training 

budget. 

Garai Family Math Faculty Fund 

Established in 2006 by Gabor Garai and 

Susan Pravda P’11, ’13, this fund is used 

to enhance and enrich BB&N’s math 

program on all three campuses by providing 

support for professional development 

for math faculty, for external consultants 

related to the math program, and other 

general support for the interests and 

talents of the math faculty. 

The Hixon Family English Faculty 


The Hixon Family English Faculty 

Endowment Fund, established in 2007 

by Diana and Anthony Hixon P’07 and 

Augusta Hixon ’07, is intended to be 

used to provide support for professional 

development for Upper School English 

Department faculty. 

David L. Kasdon Fund 

Established by Mrs. Jenifer Kasdon 

P’91,’98 in memory of her husband, Dr. 

David L. Kasdon ’63, P’91, ’98, this fund 

supports Upper School faculty professional 

development. 

Helen Landess Fund 

Established in 1989 by Dr. and Mrs.

P’91, ’94 to honor Mrs. Helen Landess, 

a beloved teacher in the Lower School 

for 37 years, this fund supports Lower 

School faculty development with a focus 

on language arts. A portion of the income 

from this fund also supports the annual 

Landess Author Series for the Lower 

School community. 

Livingston Fund for Middle and 

Upper School Science 

Established in 1997, this fund is used 

to support professional development 

initiatives for Middle and Upper School 

Science faculty, with a preference for 

Upper School faculty. 

Sidney L. and Lester O. Simonds 

Faculty Development Fund 

This fund was established in 1986 by 

Marshall Simonds and Jonathan O. 

Simonds ’48 in honor of their fathers, 

Sidney L. Simonds ’10 and Lester O. 

Simonds ’13. The fund promotes faculty 

excellence by furthering professional 

development of faculty. 

Sixth Grade Fund for Lower 

School Faculty 

Established in 2006 by parents of 

the Class of 2012 and intended to be 

perpetuated by parents of future classes 

of sixth grade parents, this fund is to 

be used to enhance broadly the lives of 

Lower School faculty as well as the overall 

learning environment of the Lower School, 

and is to be allocated each year for 

special initiatives and endeavors that are 

particularly meaningful to Lower School 

faculty. 

Anne Elliott Smith Math Faculty 


This fund honors the memory of a 

beloved and distinguished Middle School 

mathematics teacher, Anne Elliott Smith. 

The fund provides support for curriculum 

development in mathematics or related 

studies with a preference for faculty and 

programs at the Middle School. 

Elizabeth Thacher Stowe Teaching 

Fund 

This fund was established in 1974 in 

honor of Elizabeth Stowe, who served as 

Headmistress of the Buckingham School 

from 1963 until 1974 in recognition of 

her talents as a stimulating teacher and 

able administrator. The fund supports 

faculty professional development with 

special emphasis on projects designed 

to expand the interrelationship of the 

teacher and student in the teaching 

process. 

Marian Vaillant Fund 

Established in 1984 by Annette B. Cottrell 

Merle-Smith ’49 and her husband to 

honor the former headmistress of the 

Buckingham School, the Vaillant Fund 

supports faculty development through 

professional meetings, seminars, and 

workshops. 

Susanne B. Williams Fund for 

Social Studies Research 

Established by Mr. Manning A. Williams in 

honor of his wife Susanne Williams P’69, 

’71, ’74, a former second grade and social 

studies teacher in the Lower School, the 

Williams Fund supports programs that 

encourage an interdisciplinary approach 

to the Lower School social studies curriculum, 

as well as opportunities for Lower 

School faculty to study and travel with their 

families. 

FINANCIAL AID 

Financial aid endowment funds have been 

established over the years by alumni/ae, 

parents and friends of the School who are 

committed to making a BB&N education 

available to talented students regardless of 

their financial means. Financial aid endowment 

funds support either the general 

financial aid budget of the school, or the 

financial aid award to a specific type of 

student specified by the donor. 

BB&N Financial Aid Fund 

Income from BB&N’s general financial aid 

endowment supports the School’s annual 

financial aid budget. 

The Alpert Family Financial Aid 

Fund 

The Alpert Family Fund was established in 

2007 by Norman W. Alpert ’76 to support 

the general financial aid program of BB&N 

by providing funding for an inner city 

student, with a preference for an Upper 

School student. 

The Armida V. Beatrice 


This fund was established by G. Joseph 

Beatrice P’74 in memory of his wife. The 

fund provides financial assistance to an 

Upper School scholar-athlete. 

A. Ellis Benjamin Fund 

Established in 1951 by A. Ellis Benjamin 

P’46, ’50, ’53, this fund provides financial 

aid to an Upper School student. 

Robert F. Bradford Scholarship 

Fund 

This fund honors former Governor of the 

Commonwealth and former trustee Robert 

F. Bradford ’18, who set standards of 

distinguished public service in the fields of 

government and education.

BB&N’s general financial aid budget with 

a preference for a Lower School student. 

Florence V. Burden Foundation 

Fund 

Established in 1996, this fund is to be 

used for financial aid for minority and/or 

economically disadvantaged students in 

the Lower School. 

John and Archontoula Bucuvalas 


Established in 1998 by Michael Bucuvalas 

’66 and his wife Martha, this fund 

provides financial aid for talented and 

deserving students, with a preference 

for students from the Somerville Public 

Schools. 

Cable Family Financial Aid Fund 

Established in 2005 by members of the 

Cable family, this fund is to be used to 

support the general financial aid program 

at BB&N.

Created in 1982 by Eleanor Earle P’61, 

’65 in memory of her husband, this fund

Established in 2004 by John Fitzpatrick

Fund

this fund supports international travel 

opportunities for talented students with

E. Vincent Merry Fund 

Named in memory of E. Vincent Merry, 

husband of BB&N former trustee Karan 

A. Merry P’86, ’91, this fund was established 

in 1980 and provides financial 

assistance for academic or special programs 

for minority students and faculty. 

Lawrence J. and Anne Cable 

Rubenstein Scholarship Fund 

Established in 1997 by the Cable family 

and the Lawrence J. and Anne Cable 

Rubenstein Foundation, this fund provides 

financial aid support to less advantaged 

children in the Boston area. 

Steppingstone-to-Opportunity 

Fund 

Originally established in 1997 by John 

Simon ’80 and his wife Susan, this fund 

supports BB&N’s financial aid program 

with a preference for 7th and 8th grade 

students from the Steppingstone Program. 

Funds may also be allocated to other 

students with demonstrated financial 

need in grades nine through twelve, with 

preference given to former Steppingstone 

students. 

Craig B. Stonestreet Fund 

Established in 1991 by family and 

friends in memory of Craig B. Stonestreet, 

Browne & Nichols Class of 1949 and 

former Director of the Upper School, 

income from this fund is used to provide 

financial aid to deserving Upper School 

scholar-athletes. The Fund also provides 

an annual prize to a member of the junior 

class in recognition of high scholarship, 

excellence in athletics, and constructive 

influence within the School. 

The Thompson Foster Street 

Foundation Fund 

Established in 2004 by David J. 

Thompson ‘85 and Elizabeth Thompson, 

this fund supports BB&N’s financial aid 

program with a preference for a scholarathlete 

from a diverse ethnic background. 

Alexandra and Ben Trustman 

Financial Aid Fund 

Established in 2001 by a BB&N 

grandparent in honor of her two BB&N 

grandchildren, this fund is used to support 

the general financial aid program 

with a strong preference for assisting an 

African-American student and a slight 

preference for a Lower School African- 

American student. 

The Mildred and Clarence 

Williams Financial Aid Fund 

Established in 2007 by Clarence G. Williams, 

Jr. ’85 and his wife Joanne Taylor, 

the Mildred and Clarence Williams Fund 

is named in honor of Clarence’s parents. 

The Fund is to be used to support the 

general financial aid program of BB&N 

with a preference for supporting an Upper 

School inner city student of color and 

preferably a student who entered BB&N 

in the Lower or Middle School. 

ACADEMIC PROGRAMS 

Asian Studies Endowment Fund 

Established in 1999, this fund supports 

faculty salaries and program expenses 

related to the Chinese or other Asian 

language studies program. 

Maureen Baker Lower School 

Language Arts Fund 

Established in 2004 by a group of Lower 

School parents to honor Maureen Baker, 

a Lower School teacher at The Buckingham 

School and BB&N from 1964 

to 2004, the Baker Fund supports the 

Lower School language arts program with 

a preference for Morse Building (Beginner, 

Kindergarten, and Grade 1) students. 

Uses for the fund include support for a 

poet-in-residence, a visiting author or illustrator 

specializing in writing for younger 

students, or professional development 

in the language arts for Morse Building 

faculty. 

Larry Cabot Fund for Girls’ Crew 

Established in 2000 in honor of long-time 

faculty member and girls’ crew coach 

Larry Cabot, this fund supports the program 

expenses of the girls’ crew program. 

Class of 1987 Audio Visual Fund 

Established in honor of the graduating 

students in the Class of 1987, this fund is 

used to support current and future needs 

of the audiovisual program at the Upper 

School. 

Class of 1988 International Fund 

Established in honor of graduating 

students in the Class of 1988, this fund 

supports international education at BB&N 

by providing study and travel opportunities 

for students and faculty; curriculum 

expansion in international studies, 

including foreign languages; or bringing 

internationally renowned speakers to the 

School. 

Class of 1989 Art Fund 

Established in honor of graduating 

students in the Class of 1989, this fund 

supports all aspects of the art program 

at BB&N and may be used for faculty 

enrichment, visiting artists, speakers, curriculum 

development, cultural activities, 

travel, or special equipment. 

Class of 1990 Science Fund 

Established in honor of graduating students 

in the Class of 1990, this fund supports 

the teaching of science at BB&N. 

Comitas Fund – Lower School 

Established in 1996 through an anonymous 

gift, this fund provides program 

support to promote anti-bias, gender-fair

curriculum and seminars, the hiring of 

faculty of color, and diversity and gender 

equity training at the Lower School. 

Comitas Fund – Middle School 

Established in 2000, this fund provides 

program support to promote anti-bias, 

gender-fair curriculum and seminars, the 

hiring of faculty of color, and diversity 

and gender equity training at the Middle 

School. 

George Deptula Russian Program 

Enrichment Fund 

Established in 1995 by the Dangel 

family in honor of former Russian History 

teacher George Deptula P’66, this fund 

enriches the programs of the Russian 

Department by supporting the acquisition 

of resource materials, underwriting visits 

by distinguished guest speakers, and 

providing financial assistance to enable 

students of Russian to travel and participate 

in special programs.

James Ducey Book Fund 

Established in 1986 by J. Richard Hunneman, 

Jr. ’42, this fund supports the purchase 

of books and periodicals in science, 

technology, and applied sciences. 

English Seminar Learning Fund 

Established in 1997, this fund was 

established in honor of Jane Clark, former 

Middle School teacher and Academic Skills 

Coordinator. The fund supports BB&N 

programs that directly benefit students and 

accommodate their learning styles, with a 

preference for programs for 7th and 8th 

grade students. 

Fesus Girls’ Crew Fund 

Established in 1993 by Mr. and Mrs. 

George J. Fesus P’90, ’93, this fund supports 

the girls’ crew program. 

Fraulein Grote Fund for German 

Culture 

This fund supports Middle or Upper School 

department expenses related to German 

culture, literature, and history. 

Middle School students and faculty continued 

their tradition of community outreach by 

participating in the annual Giving Thanks Day. 

This year, preschoolers from the Peabody School 

in Cambridge visited the Middle School for a 

morning full of fun activities. Middle School 

students and faculty also supported a variety of 

local organizations that need a helping hand— 

this year reaching out to Safe Passage, On the 

Rise, Horizons for Homeless Children, Bristol 

Soup Lodge in Waltham and the Boston Medical 

Center among many others. 

Hintlian Library Art Book Fund 

This fund was established in 1987 by Ann 

Hintlian in honor of her daughter LuAnn 

Hintlian Ohanian ’73, and is used to 

purchase books on the arts for the Upper 

School library. 

Hodder Lecture Fund 

Established in 1998 by colleagues and 

friends, this fund honors the contributions 

of Elizabeth D. Hodder P’80, ’82, 

’85, ’87 to the Upper School during her 

eight-year tenure as Dean of Students. 

The fund supports a program to bring to 

the school a recognized artist, athlete, 

scholar or leader to meet with classes, 

give workshops, and/or speak at an All- 

School assembly. 

Hoyt Family Library Endowment 

Fund 

Established in 2003 through the trust 

of Natalie Hoyt, this fund is named in 

memory of her brothers Barrett Hoyt ’26 

and Harrison Hoyt ’34. The income from 

this fund is used for the purchase of 

books for the BB&N libraries. 

Lower School Reading Fund 

Established in 1999, the Lower School 

Reading Fund supports the “special 

needs” portion of the Lower School reading 

program by accommodating students’ 

learning styles as readers. 

Anna Minot Theater 

Production Fund 

Established in 2006 by Anna Minot 

Warren ’35, a lifelong professional actor 

who helped establish the Buckingham 

drama program, this fund provides 

income to help underwrite the annual 

production costs of the Upper School 

Drama Program including such expenses 

as costume purchase or rental, set 

materials, script and music rental, lighting 

supplies, and royalties. 

Pechet Family Book Fund 

The Pechet Fund is used for the purchase 

of books for BB&N’s libraries. 

Petropoulos Art Scholars Program 

Fund 

The Petropoulos Art Scholars Program 

Fund represents a new direction for the 

Petropoulos Art Prize Fund, originally 

established in 1983 by Andre Balazs ’75 

and Peter Gergely ’72 in memory of John 

B. Petropoulos P’93, a beloved member of 

the Browne & Nichols and BB&N Upper 

School Art Department faculty from 1962 

to 1982. The Petropoulos Art Scholars 

Program provides an enriched experience 

for Upper School students who participate 

in independent study programs in the 

visual arts. 

Saunders Family Fitness Center 

Equipment Fund 

Established in 1999 through gifts from 

Gary and Barbara Saunders P’00, ’04 

and Jeffrey and Debra Saunders P’03, 

this fund supports the purchase of 

replacement equipment for the Fitness 

Center in the Nicholas Athletic Center. 

The Sixth Grade Endowment Fund 

for Student Enrichment 

This fund was established in 2007 by 

parents in the Class of 2013 to enhance 

and enrich the learning opportunities for 

Lower School students through supplemental 

programs in the arts, sciences, or 

other academic areas. 

Reeves Stratton Science Fund 

Established in 1980 by Browne & Nichols 

alumni from classes that graduated in 

the mid-1940s, this fund honors the 

memory of B&N faculty members James 

Arthur Reeves and Charles Edward Stratton. 

The fund supports the purchase of 

reference materials for the Upper School 

library, provides materials for the Science 

Department, and supports faculty professional 

development. 

Marjorie Thompson Fund 

Established in 1989 by family and friends 

in memory of Marjorie Thompson to 

honor her contributions and devotion to 

the School during the many years she 

served as Director of Development, this 

fund provides support for the Head’s 

Discretionary Fund.

The Upper School Critical 

Languages Program Fund 

Established in 2006 by an anonymous 

donor, this fund honors Upper School 

Language Department Chair Armen 

Dedekian, a distinguished member of the 

BB&N language faculty since 1971, who 

has played a crucial role in strengthening 

and expanding BB&N’s nationally known 

Russian language program. The Fund provides 

program support for the teaching of 

non-traditional and less commonly taught 

languages including the currently taught 

languages of Russian, Chinese, and Arabic, 

with a preference for program support for 

Russian. 

John H. “Doc” Walters Fund 

Established in 1999 in memory of longtime 

Upper School science teacher Doc 

Walters P’68, ’70, this fund supports the 

purchase of equipment, professional 

development for science faculty, and other 

ongoing expenses of the Upper School 

Science Department.

Eric Benke Drug and Alcohol 

Awareness Fund 

Established in 2005 by the Upper School 

Parents’ Association, this fund honors Eric 

Benke, Director of the BB&N Upper School 

from 2000 – 2005, and his work with and 

for Upper School students, particularly his 

efforts to ensure their safety regarding drug 

and alcohol use. The Benke Fund is used 

to support additional drug and alcohol 

programs developed under the direction of 

the Upper School Counselor. 

The Jenny Fiol Birch 1987 

Financial Aid Fund 

The Jenny Fiol Birch Fund was established 

in 2007 by alumni/ae and friends of the 

Class of 1987 in memory of Jenny Fiol 

Birch ’87. This spendable fund honors 

Jenny’s cherished experience in Italy during 

her Junior year and is intended to assist 

BB&N financial aid students’ expenses for 

the School’s study abroad program. 


Community Family Fund 

Established in 2001 by a group of BB&N 

parents in response to the events of 

September 11, 2001, this fund provides 

support to current BB&N families in 

immediate need of tuition assistance 

following the death of a parent. 

Bartlett M. Hauthaway 


Established in 2001 by Bartlett M. 

Hauthaway ’42, this fund provides a full 

scholarship annually for one or more 

Upper School students of good character 

who are strongly motivated, intellectually 

or artistically promising, able to cooperate, 

eager to lead or create, and who have 

a deep and abiding interest in nature. 

Inavale Foundation Financial Aid 

Fund 

This gift provides a full scholarship to a 

deserving Upper School student. 

The Kinasewich Senior Speakers 

Program Fund 

The Kinasewich Fund was initiated by 

Chris Mosca ’75 in 2007 to honor the 

memory of Gene Kinasewich who served 

as a member of the faculty, a coach, and 

class dean from 1973 to 1977. This 

spendable fund will support a guest 

speaker program for BB&N Seniors to 

help them address issues they face as 

they leave BB&N. 

Lower School Faculty Training 

Program Fund 

Established in 2003 by Ethel Marran 

GP’12, this fund supports BB&N’s efforts 

to recruit and train young teaching professionals 

who will increase the diversity of 

the Lower School faculty and direct the 

After School Study Skills Program at the 

Lower School. 

Past Parents’ Financial Aid Fund 

Established in 1999 by parents of BB&N 

graduates, this spendable fund provides 

financial aid for an Upper School student.

Eva Belmont ’08 won two different musical 

contests: the Concord Orchestra Young Artist 

Competition and the Waltham Philharmonic’s 

Concerto Competition. Belmont performed the 

Saint-Saens Piano Concerto #2 in March with 

the Concord Orchestra, and performed the same 

concerto with the Waltham Philharmonic in May. 

The Porter Family Russian 

Program Fund 

The Porter Family Russian Program Fund 

was established in 2007 by Michael 

Porter P’06, ’07 in appreciation of the 

strong impact that the Russian program 

has had on students at BB&N and 

in honor of his daughter Sonia ’07’s 

experience in the program during her 

time at BB&N. This spendable fund 

provides income to support expenses of 

the Russian program not covered by the 

department’s operating budget such as 

costs associated with developing new 

programs or other expenses outside the 

normal classroom program. 

Al Rossiter Child Development 

Faculty Support Fund 

Established in 1999 in honor of Upper 

School faculty member W. Allen Rossiter, 

this fund supports the further understanding 

of child and adolescent development 

and mental health issues throughout the 

school community. 

Upper School Visiting Writers 

Fund 

The Upper School Visiting Writers Fund 

was established in 2002 by a group 

of Upper School parents to enhance 

the writing component of the Upper 

School English curriculum by inviting 

distinguished authors, poets, and other 

writers to BB&N to work with and give

Buckingham Browne & Nichols, a coeducational day school in 

Cambridge, Massachusetts, was established in 1974 by the merger of two independent schools, 

the Buckingham School and the Browne & Nichols School, founded respectively in 1889 

and 1883. Located on three campuses, we work as one school in the pursuit of excellence. We 

celebrate the diversity of our community, which enriches our daily experience. 

At BB&N we foster intellectual curiosity, critical thinking and a deep concern and respect 

for others. Our educational program, coordinated from Beginners through Grade Twelve, 

provides a rigorous core curriculum, taught in flexible and innovative ways. Students acquire 

the skills and discipline necessary for academic accomplishment and learn to reflect, take risks, 

and discover. The curriculum is strengthened by our commitment to a comprehensive
