BB&n endowment and spendable Funds 46 Brizius Family Financial Aid Fund Established in 2006 by Charles and Kate Brizius P’19, this fund is used to support BB&N’s general financial aid budget with a preference for a Lower School student. Florence V. Burden Foundation Fund Established in 1996, this fund is to be used for financial aid for minority and/or economically disadvantaged students in the Lower School. John and Archontoula Bucuvalas Scholarship Fund Established in 1998 by Michael Bucuvalas ’66 and his wife Martha, this fund provides financial aid for talented and deserving students, with a preference for students from the Somerville Public Schools. Cable Family Financial Aid Fund Established in 2005 by members of the Cable family, this fund is to be used to support the general financial aid program at BB&N. Class of 1996 Financial Aid Fund Class of 1997 Financial Aid Fund Class of 1998 Financial Aid Fund Class of 2000 Financial Aid Fund Class of 2002 Financial Aid Fund Established by students in the Class of 1996, 1997, 1998, 2000 and 2002 during their senior year, these funds support BB&N’s general financial aid budget. Class of 1996 Parents’ Financial Aid Fund Class of 1999 Parents’ Financial Aid Fund Established by parents of the Class of 1996 and 1999 during their senior year, these funds support BB&N’s general financial aid budget. John H. Durant Fund Established by family and friends in memory of John Harding Durant ’41, this fund provides financial support to a student who exhibits an unbounded curiosity in the area of the natural sciences, with a preference for students interested in physics or chemistry. Osborne and Eleanor Earle Scholarship Fund Created in 1982 by Eleanor Earle P’61, ’65 in memory of her husband, this fund supports the general financial aid budget of the school. John and Jan Fitzpatrick Financial Aid Fund Established in 2004 by John Fitzpatrick ’73 and Jan Fitzpatrick, this fund supports BB&N’s financial aid program with a preference for a scholar-athlete from a diverse ethnic background. Annette D. Johnson Memorial Scholarship Fund Established by Mr. and Mrs. Dennis E. Johnson P’82 in memory of their daughter, Annette D. Johnson ’82, this fund provides general support for BB&N’s financial aid budget. Christopher James Kern Scholar- ship Fund Established in 2001 by family and friends in memory of Christopher Kern ’99, this fund provides financial aid to an Upper School scholar-athlete. George and Karen Levy Family Fund Established by the Levy family in 1994, this fund supports international travel opportunities for talented students with demonstrated financial need. E. Vincent Merry Fund Named in memory of E. Vincent Merry, husband of BB&N former trustee Karan A. Merry P’86, ’91, this fund was established in 1980 and provides financial assistance for academic or special programs for minority students and faculty. Lawrence J. and Anne Cable Rubenstein Scholarship Fund Established in 1997 by the Cable family and the Lawrence J. and Anne Cable Rubenstein Foundation, this fund provides financial aid support to less advantaged children in the Boston area. Steppingstone-to-Opportunity Fund Originally established in 1997 by John Simon ’80 and his wife Susan, this fund supports BB&N’s financial aid program with a preference for 7th and 8th grade students from the Steppingstone Program. Funds may also be allocated to other students with demonstrated financial need in grades nine through twelve, with preference given to former Steppingstone students. Craig B. Stonestreet Fund Established in 1991 by family and friends in memory of Craig B. Stonestreet, Browne & Nichols Class of 1949 and former Director of the Upper School, income from this fund is used to provide financial aid to deserving Upper School scholar-athletes. The Fund also provides an annual prize to a member of the junior class in recognition of high scholarship, excellence in athletics, and constructive influence within the School. The Thompson Foster Street Foundation Fund Established in 2004 by David J. Thompson ‘85 and Elizabeth Thompson, this fund supports BB&N’s financial aid program with a preference for a scholarathlete from a diverse ethnic background. Alexandra and Ben Trustman Financial Aid Fund Established in 2001 by a BB&N grandparent in honor of her two BB&N grandchildren, this fund is used to support the general financial aid program with a strong preference for assisting an African-American student and a slight preference for a Lower School African- American student. The Mildred and Clarence Williams Financial Aid Fund Established in 2007 by Clarence G. Williams, Jr. ’85 and his wife Joanne Taylor, the Mildred and Clarence Williams Fund is named in honor of Clarence’s parents. The Fund is to be used to support the general financial aid program of BB&N with a preference for supporting an Upper School inner city student of color and preferably a student who entered BB&N in the Lower or Middle School. ACADEMIC PROGRAMS Asian Studies Endowment Fund Established in 1999, this fund supports faculty salaries and program expenses related to the Chinese or other Asian language studies program. Maureen Baker Lower School Language Arts Fund Established in 2004 by a group of Lower School parents to honor Maureen Baker, a Lower School teacher at The Buckingham School and BB&N from 1964 to 2004, the Baker Fund supports the Lower School language arts program with a preference for Morse Building (Beginner, Kindergarten, and Grade 1) students. Uses for the fund include support for a poet-in-residence, a visiting author or illustrator specializing in writing for younger students, or professional development in the language arts for Morse Building faculty. Larry Cabot Fund for Girls’ Crew Established in 2000 in honor of long-time faculty member and girls’ crew coach Larry Cabot, this fund supports the program expenses of the girls’ crew program. Class of 1987 Audio Visual Fund Established in honor of the graduating students in the Class of 1987, this fund is used to support current and future needs of the audiovisual program at the Upper School. Class of 1988 International Fund Established in honor of graduating students in the Class of 1988, this fund supports international education at BB&N by providing study and travel opportunities for students and faculty; curriculum expansion in international studies, including foreign languages; or bringing internationally renowned speakers to the School. Class of 1989 Art Fund Established in honor of graduating students in the Class of 1989, this fund supports all aspects of the art program at BB&N and may be used for faculty enrichment, visiting artists, speakers, curriculum development, cultural activities, travel, or special equipment. Class of 1990 Science Fund Established in honor of graduating students in the Class of 1990, this fund supports the teaching of science at BB&N. Comitas Fund – Lower School Established in 1996 through an anonymous gift, this fund provides program support to promote anti-bias, gender-fair
curriculum and seminars, the hiring of faculty of color, and diversity and gender equity training at the Lower School. Comitas Fund – Middle School Established in 2000, this fund provides program support to promote anti-bias, gender-fair curriculum and seminars, the hiring of faculty of color, and diversity and gender equity training at the Middle School. George Deptula Russian Program Enrichment Fund Established in 1995 by the Dangel family in honor of former Russian History teacher George Deptula P’66, this fund enriches the programs of the Russian Department by supporting the acquisition of resource materials, underwriting visits by distinguished guest speakers, and providing financial assistance to enable students of Russian to travel and participate in special programs. highl ight James Ducey Book Fund Established in 1986 by J. Richard Hunneman, Jr. ’42, this fund supports the purchase of books and periodicals in science, technology, and applied sciences. English Seminar Learning Fund Established in 1997, this fund was established in honor of Jane Clark, former Middle School teacher and Academic Skills Coordinator. The fund supports BB&N programs that directly benefit students and accommodate their learning styles, with a preference for programs for 7th and 8th grade students. Fesus Girls’ Crew Fund Established in 1993 by Mr. and Mrs. George J. Fesus P’90, ’93, this fund supports the girls’ crew program. Fraulein Grote Fund for German Culture This fund supports Middle or Upper School department expenses related to German culture, literature, and history. Middle School students and faculty continued their tradition of community outreach by participating in the annual Giving Thanks Day. This year, preschoolers from the Peabody School in Cambridge visited the Middle School for a morning full of fun activities. Middle School students and faculty also supported a variety of local organizations that need a helping hand— this year reaching out to Safe Passage, On the Rise, Horizons for Homeless Children, Bristol Soup Lodge in Waltham and the Boston Medical Center among many others. Hintlian Library Art Book Fund This fund was established in 1987 by Ann Hintlian in honor of her daughter LuAnn Hintlian Ohanian ’73, and is used to purchase books on the arts for the Upper School library. Hodder Lecture Fund Established in 1998 by colleagues and friends, this fund honors the contributions of Elizabeth D. Hodder P’80, ’82, ’85, ’87 to the Upper School during her eight-year tenure as Dean of Students. The fund supports a program to bring to the school a recognized artist, athlete, scholar or leader to meet with classes, give workshops, and/or speak at an All- School assembly. Hoyt Family Library Endowment Fund Established in 2003 through the trust of Natalie Hoyt, this fund is named in memory of her brothers Barrett Hoyt ’26 and Harrison Hoyt ’34. The income from this fund is used for the purchase of books for the BB&N libraries. Lower School Reading Fund Established in 1999, the Lower School Reading Fund supports the “special needs” portion of the Lower School reading program by accommodating students’ learning styles as readers. Anna Minot Theater Production Fund Established in 2006 by Anna Minot Warren ’35, a lifelong professional actor who helped establish the Buckingham drama program, this fund provides income to help underwrite the annual production costs of the Upper School Drama Program including such expenses as costume purchase or rental, set materials, script and music rental, lighting supplies, and royalties. Pechet Family Book Fund The Pechet Fund is used for the purchase of books for BB&N’s libraries. Petropoulos Art Scholars Program Fund The Petropoulos Art Scholars Program Fund represents a new direction for the Petropoulos Art Prize Fund, originally established in 1983 by Andre Balazs ’75 and Peter Gergely ’72 in memory of John B. Petropoulos P’93, a beloved member of the Browne & Nichols and BB&N Upper School Art Department faculty from 1962 to 1982. The Petropoulos Art Scholars Program provides an enriched experience for Upper School students who participate in independent study programs in the visual arts. Saunders Family Fitness Center Equipment Fund Established in 1999 through gifts from Gary and Barbara Saunders P’00, ’04 and Jeffrey and Debra Saunders P’03, this fund supports the purchase of replacement equipment for the Fitness Center in the Nicholas Athletic Center. The Sixth Grade Endowment Fund for Student Enrichment This fund was established in 2007 by parents in the Class of 2013 to enhance and enrich the learning opportunities for Lower School students through supplemental programs in the arts, sciences, or other academic areas. Reeves Stratton Science Fund Established in 1980 by Browne & Nichols alumni from classes that graduated in the mid-1940s, this fund honors the memory of B&N faculty members James Arthur Reeves and Charles Edward Stratton. The fund supports the purchase of reference materials for the Upper School library, provides materials for the Science Department, and supports faculty professional development. Marjorie Thompson Fund Established in 1989 by family and friends in memory of Marjorie Thompson to honor her contributions and devotion to the School during the many years she served as Director of Development, this fund provides support for the Head’s Discretionary Fund.
