mission Buckingham Browne & Nichols, a coeducational day school in Cambridge, Massachusetts, was established in 1974 by the merger of two independent schools, the Buckingham School and the Browne & Nichols School, founded respectively in 1889 and 1883. Located on three campuses, we work as one school in the pursuit of excellence. We celebrate the diversity of our community, which enriches our daily experience. At BB&N we foster intellectual curiosity, critical thinking and a deep concern and respect for others. Our educational program, coordinated from Beginners through Grade Twelve, provides a rigorous core curriculum, taught in flexible and innovative ways. Students acquire the skills and discipline necessary for academic accomplishment and learn to reflect, take risks, and discover. The curriculum is strengthened by our commitment to a comprehensive program in the arts and athletics. In all of our experiences, both those within the School and those which use our urban location, we encourage self-reliance, knowledge of oneself and a capacity for leadership. The connections between our faculty and students are at the heart of our School. message from the Head 2 Dear Friends, With this Annual Report of Gifts, we thank you for your commitment to the School and celebrate the many accomplishments and programs your generosity has made possible. The past year has been one of numerous activities and accomplishments for our students and for the School. On the Upper School campus, September 2006 started with a new theater and a renovated and beautifully refurbished library. As the months went by, we watched from some choice observation spots (one of which was the Library!) as the new wing took shape. Outside the classroom building, the landscape was dominated by construction equipment forcing us to relocate (but not curtail) many academic and athletic activities. This September we proudly opened our doors to a project that reshapes our Upper School art, science and academic facilities and, with a focus on student and faculty spaces, enhances our commitment to strengthening connections among all members of the BB&N community. Between the new wing (recently named Renaissance Hall) and the new Student Commons we have, literally and figuratively, created a new heart for the campus. This would not have happened without your generous support of the early stages of the Opening Minds Campaign, which has now surpassed $46 million on our way to our $62 million goal. Even as BB&N depends on the Campaign to fund and shape the future through new facilities and an increased endowment, the School looks to the Annual Fund to support the people and programs that make BB&N the special place it is today. Classroom activities, field trips, student clubs, plays, musical events, art classes, athletic teams, away games, books in the libraries, professional development for the faculty, financial aid for our families—all these contribute to the fabric of our community and all are made possible by your generous support of the Annual Fund. Once again, we have broken a record for annual support by raising more than $2.2 million to support the ongoing operations of the School. With thanks to our donors, we applaud the many parent and alumni/ae volunteers who have worked to make this happen. At the core of BB&N is an extraordinary group of people—students, faculty, and staff—engaged in an exceptional educational program. In this report we profile some of the exciting new programs that graced our campuses this year, as well as some of the many accomplishments of our students and faculty. I hope you’ll agree that these are indicative of the vitality, engagement, and innovation you find in and out of our classrooms.
