BB&n endowment and spendable Funds 44 BB&N Endowment and Spendable Funds GENERAL/UNRESTRICTED ENDOWMENT The general endowment supports the annual operating budget of the school including faculty and staff salaries, academic programs, the library, athletics, etc. John Moors Cabot Fund Established in 1981 through a trust from John Moors Cabot ’19. Thomas D. Cabot Fund Established in 1985 through a gift from Thomas Cabot ’13, this fund supports secondary education particularly in the math and sciences. Rosalind E. Gorin General Endowment Fund Established in 1985 by former and current trustee Rosalind E. Gorin ’62. Nathaniel M. Gorton General Endowment Fund Established in 1991 by former board chair The Honorable Nathaniel M. Gorton ’56, P’88, ’90, ’92. highl ight Conrad C. Hunneman ’45 Memorial Fund Established in 1997 by J. Richard Hunneman, Jr. ’42 in memory of his brother. Paul Jacobs General Endowment Fund Established in 1969 through a gift from Mr. and Mrs. Paul Jacobs P’60, ’63, ’69. FACULTY COMPENSATION BB&N Faculty Compensation Endowment Fund Income from BB&N’s general faculty compensation endowment is used to support the school’s faculty compensation budget. Class of 2001 Parents’ Faculty Compensation Fund Class of 2003 Parents’ Faculty Compensation Fund Class of 2004 Parents’ Faculty Compensation Fund These funds were established by parents of the Class of 2001, 2003, and 2004 to support BB&N’s faculty compensation budget. Two BB&N eighth graders achieved perfect scores in the Mathematical Association of America’s junior high school examination. The 25-question, 45-minute multiple choice examination applies the concepts taught at the junior high level to a wide range of problems. New funds established in 2006-2007. The BB&n endowment, which had a market value of $45 million as of June 30, 2007, is comprised of more than 130 named and general endowed funds, the income from which supports approximately 5.5% of BB&n’s operating budget each year. established through both outright gifts and bequests by alumni/ae, parents, and friends with a vision for BB&n’s future, these funds provide the long-term financial support necessary to sustain many areas of the BB&n operating budget, from faculty compensation, professional development, and financial aid to academic and athletic programs. The following list describes many of BB&n’s current endowment funds and the areas of the budget they support. new funds created during 2006-2007 are highlighted below. The Class of 2007 Faculty Endowment Fund This fund was established by parents in the Class of 2007 through their Senior Parents’ Gift campaign and will provide permanent endowment to support BB&N’s faculty compensation and professional development budget. John H. Etter Teaching Fund Established in honor of John H. Etter ’49, Director of Athletics for more than 40 years, this fund supports the Director of Athletics position. The Legends Fund The Legends Fund was created in 2007 to recognize BB&N’s faculty “legends” upon their retirement and to honor their extraordinary commitment to the School during their many years of service. This fund provides permanent support to BB&N’s faculty endowment for compensation, professional development, and summer travel grants. Mary Newmann Faculty Compensation Fund Established in 2000 by current and former trustees of the Buckingham School, Browne & Nichols, and BB&N, this fund honors former Head of School Mary Newmann and supports the School’s general faculty compensation budget. Edwin H. B. Pratt Faculty Fund Established in 1975 through a bequest from the Edwin H. Baker Pratt Trust, this fund supports BB&N’s faculty compensation budget. Edwin and Aileen Pratt Faculty Development Fund This fund was established by members of the Edwin and Aileen Pratt Fund Committee in 1978 in recognition of the Pratts’ invaluable service to the School. The fund supports the moral and intellectual atmosphere at BB&N by providing for faculty compensation. Rudman Family Athletic Fund Established in 1984 by the Rudman family on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of Stanley and Dorothy Rudman P’66, ’70, GP’05 and redesignated in 2003 by Jeffrey Rudman ‘66, this fund underwrites the salary of the boys’ football coach at BB&N and supports general expenses of the football and/or general athletic program. FACULTY PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT BB&N Faculty Professional Development Fund Income from BB&N’s general faculty professional development endowment supports curricular research and program development, workshops and conferences, graduate coursework, and summer travel and study grants that reward senior faculty for long service and dedication to BB&N. Frances Ackerly Fund for Gender Studies Established in 1991 in honor of faculty emerita Frances Ackerly, this fund supports professional development for Middle School faculty to do research,
write, attend conferences, and educate the community on gender issues in education. Betsy Allen Fund for Lower School Special Initiatives Established in 2006 by a group of parents to honor Betsy Allen, a beloved member of the BB&N Lower School faculty for nearly 30 years, this fund provides support for specialists and other resources to train and educate Lower School teachers—particularly Morse Building (Beginner, Kindergarten, and Grade 1) teachers—on child development issues and other areas related to but outside of specific curricular topics. Class of 1991 Parents’ Faculty Development Fund Class of 1992 Parents’ Faculty Development Fund Class of 1993 Parents’ Faculty Development Fund Class of 1994 Parents’ Faculty Development Fund Class of 1995 Parents’ Faculty Development Fund Class of 1997 Parents’ Faculty Development Fund Class of 1998 Parents’ Faculty Enrichment Fund Established by parents in the Classes of 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1997, and 1998 during their senior year, these funds support BB&N’s general faculty professional development budget. Class of 1999 Faculty Development Fund Established by Class of 1999 students during their senior year, this fund supports BB&N’s general faculty development budget. Clifton Family Fund Established in 1987 by former trustee Roger Clifton P’86, this fund promotes programs for faculty that will expand their understanding of new points of view and encourage them to be more responsive and inclusive in their teaching. The Curhan-Pokross Fund to Promote Faculty Excellence Established by Prof. and Mrs. Ronald C. Curhan P’86, ’89 and David R. and Muriel Pokross GP’86, ’89, ’09 to encourage and promote faculty excellence in the Upper School, this fund provides training and professional development opportunities for Upper School faculty. Educational Technology Endowment Fund Gifts designated for educational technology endowment provide support for BB&N’s educational technology training budget. Garai Family Math Faculty Fund Established in 2006 by Gabor Garai and Susan Pravda P’11, ’13, this fund is used to enhance and enrich BB&N’s math program on all three campuses by providing support for professional development for math faculty, for external consultants related to the math program, and other general support for the interests and talents of the math faculty. The Hixon Family English Faculty Endowment Fund The Hixon Family English Faculty Endowment Fund, established in 2007 by Diana and Anthony Hixon P’07 and Augusta Hixon ’07, is intended to be used to provide support for professional development for Upper School English Department faculty. David L. Kasdon Fund Established by Mrs. Jenifer Kasdon P’91,’98 in memory of her husband, Dr. David L. Kasdon ’63, P’91, ’98, this fund supports Upper School faculty professional development. Helen Landess Fund Established in 1989 by Dr. and Mrs. J. Philip Kistler, Mr. and Mrs. David B. Roberts ’67, P’97, ’99, and Pam Turner P’91, ’94 to honor Mrs. Helen Landess, a beloved teacher in the Lower School for 37 years, this fund supports Lower School faculty development with a focus on language arts. A portion of the income from this fund also supports the annual Landess Author Series for the Lower School community. Livingston Fund for Middle and Upper School Science Established in 1997, this fund is used to support professional development initiatives for Middle and Upper School Science faculty, with a preference for Upper School faculty. Sidney L. and Lester O. Simonds Faculty Development Fund This fund was established in 1986 by Marshall Simonds and Jonathan O. Simonds ’48 in honor of their fathers, Sidney L. Simonds ’10 and Lester O. Simonds ’13. The fund promotes faculty excellence by furthering professional development of faculty. Sixth Grade Fund for Lower School Faculty Established in 2006 by parents of the Class of 2012 and intended to be perpetuated by parents of future classes of sixth grade parents, this fund is to be used to enhance broadly the lives of Lower School faculty as well as the overall learning environment of the Lower School, and is to be allocated each year for special initiatives and endeavors that are particularly meaningful to Lower School faculty. Anne Elliott Smith Math Faculty Development Fund This fund honors the memory of a beloved and distinguished Middle School mathematics teacher, Anne Elliott Smith. The fund provides support for curriculum development in mathematics or related studies with a preference for faculty and programs at the Middle School. Elizabeth Thacher Stowe Teaching Fund This fund was established in 1974 in honor of Elizabeth Stowe, who served as Headmistress of the Buckingham School from 1963 until 1974 in recognition of her talents as a stimulating teacher and able administrator. The fund supports faculty professional development with special emphasis on projects designed to expand the interrelationship of the teacher and student in the teaching process. Marian Vaillant Fund Established in 1984 by Annette B. Cottrell Merle-Smith ’49 and her husband to honor the former headmistress of the Buckingham School, the Vaillant Fund supports faculty development through professional meetings, seminars, and workshops. Susanne B. Williams Fund for Social Studies Research Established by Mr. Manning A. Williams in honor of his wife Susanne Williams P’69, ’71, ’74, a former second grade and social studies teacher in the Lower School, the Williams Fund supports programs that encourage an interdisciplinary approach to the Lower School social studies curriculum, as well as opportunities for Lower School faculty to study and travel with their families. FINANCIAL AID Financial aid endowment funds have been established over the years by alumni/ae, parents and friends of the School who are committed to making a BB&N education available to talented students regardless of their financial means. Financial aid endowment funds support either the general financial aid budget of the school, or the financial aid award to a specific type of student specified by the donor. BB&N Financial Aid Fund Income from BB&N’s general financial aid endowment supports the School’s annual financial aid budget. The Alpert Family Financial Aid Fund The Alpert Family Fund was established in 2007 by Norman W. Alpert ’76 to support the general financial aid program of BB&N by providing funding for an inner city student, with a preference for an Upper School student. The Armida V. Beatrice Scholarship Fund This fund was established by G. Joseph Beatrice P’74 in memory of his wife. The fund provides financial assistance to an Upper School scholar-athlete. A. Ellis Benjamin Fund Established in 1951 by A. Ellis Benjamin P’46, ’50, ’53, this fund provides financial aid to an Upper School student. Robert F. Bradford Scholarship Fund This fund honors former Governor of the Commonwealth and former trustee Robert F.
