The Upper School Critical
Languages Program Fund
Established in 2006 by an anonymous
donor, this fund honors Upper School
Language Department Chair Armen
Dedekian, a distinguished member of the
BB&N language faculty since 1971, who
has played a crucial role in strengthening
and expanding BB&N’s nationally known
Russian language program. The Fund provides
program support for the teaching of
non-traditional and less commonly taught
languages including the currently taught
languages of Russian, Chinese, and Arabic,
with a preference for program support for
Russian.
John H. “Doc” Walters Fund
Established in 1999 in memory of longtime
Upper School science teacher Doc
Walters P’68, ’70, this fund supports the
purchase of equipment, professional
development for science faculty, and other
ongoing expenses of the Upper School
Science Department.
BB&N SPENDABLE FUNDS
The funds listed below provide spendable
resources to support a variety of School
priorities including financial aid, faculty
compensation, and academic support
initiatives.
Eric Benke Drug and Alcohol
Awareness Fund
Established in 2005 by the Upper School
Parents’ Association, this fund honors Eric
Benke, Director of the BB&N Upper School
from 2000 – 2005, and his work with and
for Upper School students, particularly his
efforts to ensure their safety regarding drug
and alcohol use. The Benke Fund is used
to support additional drug and alcohol
programs developed under the direction of
the Upper School Counselor.
The Jenny Fiol Birch 1987
Financial Aid Fund
The Jenny Fiol Birch Fund was established
in 2007 by alumni/ae and friends of the
Class of 1987 in memory of Jenny Fiol
Birch ’87. This spendable fund honors
Jenny’s cherished experience in Italy during
her Junior year and is intended to assist
BB&N financial aid students’ expenses for
the School’s study abroad program.
New funds established in 2006-2007.
Community Family Fund
Established in 2001 by a group of BB&N
parents in response to the events of
September 11, 2001, this fund provides
support to current BB&N families in
immediate need of tuition assistance
following the death of a parent.
Bartlett M. Hauthaway
Scholarship Fund
Established in 2001 by Bartlett M.
Hauthaway ’42, this fund provides a full
scholarship annually for one or more
Upper School students of good character
who are strongly motivated, intellectually
or artistically promising, able to cooperate,
eager to lead or create, and who have
a deep and abiding interest in nature.
Inavale Foundation Financial Aid
Fund
This gift provides a full scholarship to a
deserving Upper School student.
The Kinasewich Senior Speakers
Program Fund
The Kinasewich Fund was initiated by
Chris Mosca ’75 in 2007 to honor the
memory of Gene Kinasewich who served
as a member of the faculty, a coach, and
class dean from 1973 to 1977. This
spendable fund will support a guest
speaker program for BB&N Seniors to
help them address issues they face as
they leave BB&N.
Lower School Faculty Training
Program Fund
Established in 2003 by Ethel Marran
GP’12, this fund supports BB&N’s efforts
to recruit and train young teaching professionals
who will increase the diversity of
the Lower School faculty and direct the
After School Study Skills Program at the
Lower School.
Past Parents’ Financial Aid Fund
Established in 1999 by parents of BB&N
graduates, this spendable fund provides
financial aid for an Upper School student.

Eva Belmont ’08 won two different musical
contests: the Concord Orchestra Young Artist
Competition and the Waltham Philharmonic’s
Concerto Competition. Belmont performed the
Saint-Saens Piano Concerto #2 in March with
the Concord Orchestra, and performed the same
concerto with the Waltham Philharmonic in May.
The Porter Family Russian
Program Fund
The Porter Family Russian Program Fund
was established in 2007 by Michael
Porter P’06, ’07 in appreciation of the
strong impact that the Russian program
has had on students at BB&N and
in honor of his daughter Sonia ’07’s
experience in the program during her
time at BB&N. This spendable fund
provides income to support expenses of
the Russian program not covered by the
department’s operating budget such as
costs associated with developing new
programs or other expenses outside the
normal classroom program.
Al Rossiter Child Development
Faculty Support Fund
Established in 1999 in honor of Upper
School faculty member W. Allen Rossiter,
this fund supports the further understanding
of child and adolescent development
and mental health issues throughout the
school community.
Upper School Visiting Writers
Fund
The Upper School Visiting Writers Fund
was established in 2002 by a group
of Upper School parents to enhance
the writing component of the Upper
School English curriculum by inviting
distinguished authors, poets, and other
writers to BB&N to work with and give
presentations for Upper School students
and faculty.
