1904 - 1941<br />
From its inception until 1941, the “Y”<br />
canvassed the community on an annual<br />
basis for funds to help meet its<br />
operating expenses. The Community<br />
Chest (now United Way), first appeared<br />
with a view to coordinate all community<br />
fund raising.<br />
125 men attend a<br />
mass meeting on<br />
January 4th to<br />
initiate the formation<br />
<strong>of</strong> a <strong>YMCA</strong>. The<br />
meeting organized a<br />
Citizen’s Committee.<br />
A group <strong>of</strong> young<br />
men quickly raised<br />
$5,526 in cash and<br />
pledges for a<br />
<strong>YMCA</strong> program.<br />
The total amount<br />
raised over a three<br />
year period from four<br />
campaigns was up to<br />
$54,506.<br />
1947<br />
The <strong>YMCA</strong>, YWCA and<br />
the Salvation Army<br />
cooperated to raise<br />
$358,479. The<br />
<strong>YMCA</strong> added a<br />
four-storey addition<br />
to the front <strong>of</strong><br />
the “Y”.<br />
$885,000 was<br />
raised to replace the<br />
original “Y” with a<br />
new gym, courts,<br />
pool and 3 floors <strong>of</strong><br />
residence and to<br />
build the West<br />
<strong>Edmonton</strong> “Y”.<br />
1985<br />
Shape-Up Your<br />
Future Capital<br />
Campaign raised<br />
$3.1 million to build<br />
a new “Y” in the west<br />
end called the Jamie<br />
Platz Family <strong>YMCA</strong>.<br />
Partners for a New<br />
Tomorrow, raised a<br />
total <strong>of</strong> $5.1 million,<br />
to build the Castle<br />
Downs and William<br />
Lutsky <strong>YMCA</strong>s.<br />
2007<br />
The <strong>YMCA</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Edmonton</strong><br />
announced that the<br />
Straight from the<br />
Heart community<br />
campaign had raised<br />
$10.2 million on a<br />
goal <strong>of</strong> $7.5 million.<br />
