Lieutenant-Governor<br />

G.H.V. Bulyea<br />

formally opened the<br />

new <strong>YMCA</strong> building<br />

on February 5, 1908.<br />

1919<br />

The local “Y”<br />

approved the<br />

construction <strong>of</strong> a<br />

Red Triangle Hut<br />

along the west side<br />

<strong>of</strong> the building. The<br />

cost <strong>of</strong> $8800.00<br />

was financed by<br />

National Council <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>YMCA</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>Canada</strong>.<br />

The hut provided<br />

temporary space<br />

where veterans<br />

could gather<br />

to socialize.<br />

1944<br />

Mountglen “Y” <strong>of</strong>fice<br />

opened in the community<br />

league rink<br />

house at 110th<br />

Avenue and 127th<br />

Street. Mountglen<br />

became known as<br />

the West “Y” and later<br />

the Westmount “Y”.<br />

1952<br />

A new building<br />

including basement<br />

and four-storey unit<br />

was opened in front<br />

<strong>of</strong> and incorporated<br />

the original 1907<br />

building.<br />

1959<br />

West <strong>YMCA</strong> building<br />

at 12840-109th<br />

Avenue <strong>of</strong>ficially<br />

The South <strong>Edmonton</strong><br />

“Y” received branch<br />

status at the Annual<br />

Meeting <strong>of</strong> Feb. 11.<br />

The purchase <strong>of</strong> a<br />

church chapel<br />

cottage at 77 Street<br />

and Whyte Avenue<br />

gave the “Y” a<br />

physical home on<br />

the south side. The<br />

South “Y” was sold<br />

in 1970.<br />

<strong>YMCA</strong> Enterprise<br />

Centre opened at<br />

The Jamie Platz<br />

Family <strong>YMCA</strong> at<br />

Family <strong>YMCA</strong> began<br />

Don Wheaton Family <strong>YMCA</strong><br />

Dedicated to the Community<br />

The new Don Wheaton Family <strong>YMCA</strong> was dedicated to our community on<br />

October 24, 2007. Over 300 <strong>YMCA</strong> friends and supporters gathered in the<br />

gymnasium to celebrate the completion <strong>of</strong> the first new <strong>YMCA</strong> in downtown<br />

<strong>Edmonton</strong> in <strong>100</strong> years.<br />

The event recognized over 1300 Straight from the Heart Campaign donors.<br />

A total <strong>of</strong> $10.2 million was raised in the community campaign on an initial<br />

goal <strong>of</strong> $7.5 million. An additional $9.8 came from all orders <strong>of</strong> government<br />

and the <strong>YMCA</strong> contributed $7.5 million.<br />

Greetings were delivered from Minister <strong>of</strong> Health and Wellness, the<br />

Honourable Dave Hancock and Mayor Stephen Mandel. The Honourable<br />

Rona Ambrose, President <strong>of</strong> the Queen's Privy Council for <strong>Canada</strong>, Minister<br />

<strong>of</strong> Intergovernmental Affairs and Minister <strong>of</strong> Western Economic<br />

Diversification delivered greetings through a DVD presentation.<br />

The Don and Marion Wheaton and family members cut a ribbon to<br />

<strong>of</strong>ficially dedicate the facility to the <strong>Edmonton</strong> community.<br />
