Dear Parishioners,
PASTOR’S COLUMN
On Saturday, December 1st Saint Raphael will again be hosting the Annual Saint Louis Hills Neighborhood
Association Christmas Party in our school gym. I am pleased that we can host this wonderful event and welcome
so many people in our neighborhood to our facility. In addition, I would like to remind the ladies of
the parish of the upcoming Advent by Candlelight event to be held in our parish gym on Sunday, December
2nd. If you have not made your reservations yet, please do so and check the bulletin for more details. It will
be a lovely night to help place ourselves in the correct frame of mind as we enter into the Season of Advent.
On this coming Sunday, we conclude the Liturgical Year with the celebration of the Solemnity of Christ the
King. Pope Pius XI established the solemnity in 1925, but the reality to which it points has always been
commemorated by devout Christians. Christians have always honored our Lord with the title “King” to express
the great and lasting victory over sin and everlasting death, won for all men by His passion and death,
culminating in His Ascension to the right hand of the Father, where He is seated in glory. As King of Heaven
and Earth, Christ will return in glory to bring to fullness His redemptive work. We, His faithful stewards,
await His coming with humility and confidence in the eternal life He has made our inheritance.
Today, some say that attributing kingship to our Lord Jesus says nothing to the contemporary mind and
heart. Our response to such an observation must be twofold. First of all, the divinely inspired Word of God
repeatedly refers to our Lord as King. For example, when Gabriel announces to the Blessed Virgin Mary
that she is to be the Mother of the Messiah, he tells her that her Son “will reign over the house of Jacob for
ever; and of His kingdom there shall be no end.” (Lk 1:32) As this year’s Gospel for the Solemnity reminds
us, our Lord Himself, brought before Pilate to be tried and condemned to death, did not deny the title of
“King” and spoke of His saving work, as He had done throughout His public ministry, as the establishment
of a kingdom in which divine truth and love reign. (Jn 18:36-37)
Secondly, it is not true that kingship is an out-of-date image. How frequently we use the title “king” to honor
a person! How frequently we use the adjective “royal” to describe what is most pure and noble! In a very
particular way, for the faithful of Saint Louis, the title “king” has a powerful meaning. Our patron saint,
King Louis IX of France, was heroic in faith, hope and charity, as a husband, a father, and a king. We see
in his life the practice of the virtues which make a person truly royal, according to the mind and heart of
Christ the King.

FIRST FRIDAY ADORATION
The parish has Eucharistic Adoration in Church every
first Friday of the month, after 8:00 am Mass until
2:00 pm. It is followed by Benediction. Everyone
is welcome to come for individual prayer during any

SLHNA CHRISTMAS TREE LIGHTING
The St. Louis Hills Neighborhood Association will
host its Thirteenth Annual Christmas Tree Lighting
on Sunday, November 25, 2012, from 7-9 pm. The
Blue Spruce tree in Francis Park, Childress and Nottingham
will be lit. There will be carriage rides and
visits by Santa, Mrs. Claus and FREDBIRD of the
St. Louis Cardinals. The St. Raphael Choir will be
singing at the lighting ceremony. Everyone is invited
to join your neighbors as we celebrate the holidays
in St. Louis Hills.

CHANDELIER CLEANING
It's that time again! Can you donate a few hours of
your time to help clean the chandeliers in church?
Cleaning will begin Monday, December 3rd, immediately
after 8:00 a.m. mass. No special skills required;
just a willingness to help. If possible, just
bring a bucket and some old towels. Your efforts
will help St. Raphael's "sparkle" through the holiday

NIGHT OF PRAYER FOR LIFE
The 23rd Annual National Night of Prayer for
Life unites the Feast of the Immaculate Conception
with the Feast of St. Juan Diego in order to honor our
Blessed Mother and to pray for the protection of all
human life.
As you know, Juan Diego is the man to whom Our
Lady of Guadalupe appeared. When asked for a sign
to take to the bishop, Our Lady filled Diego's cloak
with roses and her shining image. The Night of
Prayer takes place from 9 pm Saturday, December 8
to 1 am Sunday, December 9. During the Hour of
Unity (11 pm to 12 midnight, St. Louis time), we
will unite with churches across the country to pray
for an end to abortion. We encourage all St. Raphaelites
to join in this prayer effort to uphold the sanctity
of human life.

Deby Sansone Schlapprizzi. Deby is host of Splendor of You®, a radio program addressing
varied topics on faith in contemporary living. Deby delivers a message of purpose and hope.
Advent by Candlelight is an invitation for women to let go of the activities of Christmas
and instead focus on the meaning of Christmas.
What actually happens at Advent by Candlelight? Each table hostess provides place settings for her
guests. Both casual and formal approaches are completely fine; this isn’t a decorating competition by any
means! Each hostess determines what type of food her table will enjoy together, and each guest brings a dish
to share as appropriate (potluck dinner, appetizers and dessert, dessert only, and so on).

WINTER OUTREACH
Encouraged by our Catholic Social Teachings:
“Option for the Poor and Vulnerable” and
“Solidarity”, the SRA Parish Family is once again
invited to participate in St. Louis Winter Outreach.
In a society marred by division between rich and
poor, we are reminded of the story of the Last Judgment.
Each year, many individuals and families, without
decent housing, spend their nights on the streets of
St. Louis. Winter is particularly hard for them. In an
effort to reach out to our “brethren” who will need
warmth and food, we are asking for help in providing
meals to a shelter during the coldest months.
Drivers are also needed to deliver the meals to
Americorps at 1315 Ann Street on our assigned evenings.
Drivers and others are welcome to come and
visit and/or serve on these evenings:
