The Second Sunday of Advent December 9, 2012
PASTOR’S COLUMN
On this past Monday, we celebrated the funeral for Mr. Joseph Belli, the husband of Marie
Belli of our parish. Marie first met Joseph in the first grade, and the two would later be
joined in Holy Matrimony, a union spanning some 64 years. For most of his life, Joseph
was a barber cutting the hair of many people in the area, including many priests assigned
to the Chancery where Marie worked until 1994. Please keep Marie in your thoughts and
prayers as she mourns the loss of one held so dear in her heart.
In addition, we also said goodbye to a long-time parishioner, Mr.
Howard Etling. He was the proud father of eight children and was known to many in
the Saint Raphael the Archangel Parish community as the man who lived in Stan
Musial’s home. During his more active years, Howard would come to church for
daily Mass and make other visits with the Lord in our parish church. It was quite impressive
to hear Howard’s children talk about how important Saint Raphael was to
him and how important his faith was as well. As the family mourns his loss, please
keep them in your prayers.
On the evening of the first Sunday of Advent, many of the
women of our parish gathered for a very special evening called “Advent by Candlelight.”
The keynote speaker for the evening was Deby Sansone Schlapprizzi
who graced our women with her inspiring words and brought us closer to Our
Blessed Mother by providing her own testimony of her devotion to
Mary. Through our keynote speaker, prayer and the sharing of a meal, each woman
walked away inspired and drawn more into the time of waiting, the Season of
Advent. A special word of thanks to the Women’s Prayer Group who worked to
plan, organize and execute the event. Without their efforts this wonderful event
would not have occurred. In addition, a special shout-out to Ray and Mary Anne
Braun for sharing the gift of music for the evening.
As we celebrate this coming Saturday the Solemnity
of the Immaculate Conception, we
greet Mary and call upon her with the Angel's words: "full of
grace," (Lk 1: 28) the most beautiful name that God himself has called
her from eternity. "Full of grace" she is, Mary, full of divine love from
the very first moment of her existence, providentially predestined to be
Mother of the Redeemer and intimately connected to him in the mystery
of salvation.
In Mary’s Immaculate Conception there shines forth the vocation of
Christ's disciples, who are called to become, with his grace, saints and holy through love. In her shines the
dignity of every human being who is always precious in the eyes of the Creator.
May our Blessed Mother give us the courage to say "no" to the deceptions of power, money, and pleasure; to
corruption and hypocrisy; to selfishness and violence. Let us say "no" to the Evil One, the deceitful prince of
this world and to say "yes" to Christ, who destroys the power of evil with the power of love.
Congratulations to our new Parish Council members that were selected this past Monday. Nominations were
placed in a basket and the following names were pulled out by Monsignor Breier and Angela Cierpiot: Tom
Goeddel and Kathy Benoist.
STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION
“And this is my prayer: that your love may increase
ever more and more in knowledge and every kind of
perception, to discern what is of value…”
Philippians 1:9-10
Glittery holiday ads can blind us to our stewardship
values and distort our needs and wants. It is important
that during this season of endless buying we
remember that each of us also has the need to give
back to God.
Dear St. Raphael School Families and Parishioners,
PRINCIPAL’S COLUMN
Thanks to all parents who attended the Principal Town Hall Meeting on Wednesday evening. These are great
opportunities for honest and straightforward conversation about the strengths and weaknesses of our school. I
truly appreciate those who took time out of their busy schedules to come and express their views.
In this season of Advent we prepare for the coming of the Christ Child in numerous ways. Here at school we
have beautiful Advent wreaths on both floors to serve as a reminder of this special season. We are singing
Advent songs at our school Masses (have you noticed that the kids are singing with more enthusiasm? Ask
them about our recent All School Singing Practice. Way to go St. Raphael singers!). Our 4th Graders are
leading us in Jesse Tree devotions every morning during our school morning prayer, and they are adding one
ornament a day to the tree in the front hallway. Student Council members are selling Advent Angels at lunch
recess, offering students a way to spread Advent wishes to their friends and family. And we will all be going
to Reconciliation on Monday of next week to prepare our hearts for Christmas. Please help your children remember
that Advent is a season of waiting and hoping. In our secular world it is often difficult to separate
Advent from Christmas; please help remind your children that the most important thing to be waiting and hoping
for is the birth and love of Christ.
Last week I spoke to you about the journey for excellence that we are embarking upon at St. Raphael the
Archangel School. This journey will require a great deal of commitment and work from our teachers and staff.
However, it will also require a big commitment from parents and students. In order to achieve academic excellence,
we must promote a culture of learning at school and at home. What does that mean? For us at
school, it means keeping our focus on learning results for each student. It means that we have to be very particular
about how we spend our time, always asking the question – How is this class/event/activity supporting
excellence in learning? It means that students have to embrace their role as learners. We believe that the job
of being an excellent student is the most important job our children have when they are in elementary school.
Yes, that means that being an excellent student is more important than soccer, baseball, dance, piano – well,
you get the idea! It means that students and their parents must always be asking the question – Am I setting
my priorities and attitudes in a way that supports my being the best possible student I can be? We will work
together in the coming years to develop a state-of-the-art curriculum, train teachers in research-based best
practices in education, challenge students to focus on being excellent students, and do all of this in a loving
environment that nurtures the Catholic faith of our students, families, teachers, and staff. I ask you to prayerfully
give thought to this journey, and to how you and your family can contribute to our overall success.
Lastly, a big congratulations to our 2nd Grade students on receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the
first time on Thursday, December 6th! Thanks to Mrs. Wahle and Mrs. Hickey for their patient and loving
efforts with these beautiful children of God!
Peace and Blessings,
set us free in Christ Jesus (Gal 5:1).
gift of religious liberty,
the foundation of human rights, justice,
to protect and promote our liberties;
by your grace may we have
the courage to defend them,
for our-selves and for all those
who live in this blessed land.
We ask this through the intercession of
Mary Immaculate, our patroness, and in the
name of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
with whom you live and reign,
one God, forever and ever.
WINTER OUTREACH
Encouraged by our Catholic Social Teachings:
“Option for the Poor and Vulnerable” and
“Solidarity”, the SRA Parish Family is once again
invited to participate in St. Louis Winter Outreach.
In a society marred by division between rich and
poor, we are reminded of the story of the Last Judgment.
Each year, many individuals and families, without
decent housing, spend their nights on the streets of
St. Louis. Winter is particularly hard for them. In an
effort to reach out to our “brethren” who will need
warmth and food, we are asking for help in providing
meals to a shelter during the coldest months.
Drivers are also needed to deliver the meals to
Americorps at 1315 Ann Street on our assigned evenings.
Drivers and others are welcome to come and
visit and/or serve on these evenings:
January 11, 12 & 13
February 8, 9 & 10
Food needed : 9x13 Hot Casserole, Salad & Dressing
(12 servings), Simple Dessert (12 servings).
Food is to be dropped off at Faenger Hall by 5:15
pm. If necessary, arrangements can be made to pick
it up from your home.
If you check out a key from the rectory, please
return the keys after your event by placing them
in the rectory mail slot. Thank you for your cooperation.
Please consider sharing a dish this winter and/or to
be a driver by calling Mary Ellen 352-6165 or email:
