SCHOOL OF SAINT RAPHAEL THE ARCHANGEL Formed in Faith, Prepared for Life The mission of Saint Raphael School is to form our children in the Catholic faith with Jesus as our master teacher. We, also, prepare them for the next stage of their lives by striving for academic excellence through an ever-evolving curriculum. We rely on all the members of our school community - the parents, the priests, the teachers and the parishioners - to accomplish this endeavor. Register your Target Red Card debit or credit card and 1% of all purchases are donated back to our school! It’s just this easy: • For a debit card you just need to bring a blank check with you to Target to get signedup. • For a credit card just apply in store Once you have your Red Card (the one that comes in the mail), you can register online: • Go to: target.com/tcoe • Click: Enroll in “Take Charge of Education” • You can put in the SRA school ID number (9660) and register. This year, we received a check from Target for over $1200 for our school (double from last year)! Let’s try to double our next check. The more people that register, the more money we raise. SAVE THE DATE The Marcia Matreci Memorial Trivia Night will be held Saturday, February 2 at the St. Raphael Gym. More details will follow in future bulletins. These are great opportunities for honest and straightforward conversation about the strengths and weaknesses of our school. I truly appreciate those who took time out of their busy schedules to come and express their views. In this season of Advent we prepare for the coming of the Christ Child in numerous ways. Here at school we have beautiful Advent wreaths on both floors to serve as a reminder of this special season. We are singing Advent songs at our school Masses (have you noticed that the kids are singing with more enthusiasm? Ask them about our recent All School Singing Practice. Way to go St. Raphael singers!). Our 4th Graders are leading us in Jesse Tree devotions every morning during our school morning prayer, and they are adding one ornament a day to the tree in the front hallway. Student Council members are selling Advent Angels at lunch recess, offering students a way to spread Advent wishes to their friends and family. And we will all be going to Reconciliation on Monday of next week to prepare our hearts for Christmas. Please help your children remember that Advent is a season of waiting and hoping. In our secular world it is often difficult to separate Advent from Christmas; please help remind your children that the most important thing to be waiting and hoping for is the birth and love of Christ. Last week I spoke to you about the journey for excellence that we are embarking upon at St. Raphael the Archangel School. This journey will require a great deal of commitment and work from our teachers and staff. However, it will also require a big commitment from parents and students. In order to achieve academic excellence, we must promote a culture of learning at school and at home. What does that mean? For us at school, it means keeping our focus on learning results for each student. It means that we have to be very particular about how we spend our time, always asking the question – How is this class/event/activity supporting excellence in learning? It means that students have to embrace their role as learners. We believe that the job of being an excellent student is the most important job our children have when they are in elementary school. Yes, that means that being an excellent student is more important than soccer, baseball, dance, piano – well, you get the idea! It means that students and their parents must always be asking the question – Am I setting my priorities and attitudes in a way that supports my being the best possible student I can be? We will work together in the coming years to develop a state-of-the-art curriculum, train teachers in research-based best practices in education, challenge students to focus on being excellent students, and do all of this in a loving environment that nurtures the Catholic faith of our students, families, teachers, and staff. I ask you to prayerfully give thought to this journey, and to how you and your family can contribute to our overall success. Lastly, a big congratulations to our 2nd Grade students on receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time on Thursday, December 6th! Thanks to Mrs. Wahle and Mrs. Hickey for their patient and loving efforts with these beautiful children of God!
