PARISH PICNIC

Dear Parishioners,
PASTOR’S COLUMN
When I came to Saint Raphael the Archangel Parish almost
four years ago, our current graduating 8th graders
were just entering 5th grade. They were the first class
that I trained to serve here at the parish. This weekend
we celebrate their graduation from the 8th grade during
our 10:00 a.m. Sunday Mass. As we gather as a parish
for this celebration, we come to pledge to them our support
and prayers. Most importantly we need to assure
them that they are always welcome at Saint Raphael.
Please keep them in your prayers as they make the
transition to high school. A special word of thanks to
their parents for their continued and ever faithful support
of their sos or daughters.
God greatly blessed us this past weekend with wonderful weather for our Annual Parish
Picnic. The grounds of our parish were full of children, parents and excitement on Friday
evening and all day Saturday. It took over 400 volunteer hours to make this picnic a success
so there are many people to thank. A special
word of thanks to Paul Beckerle for accepting the
role of picnic chair and working to help keep everyone
on target. Each organization helped in one
fashion or another so my deep thanks to the
Men’s Club for heading up the BBQ and beer/
soda booths, the Ladies’ Club for helping with
desserts and t-shirts, the PTA for helping to staff our game booths,
and the Parish Council for pitching in with the organization of the
picnic. There are many other individuals who gave personally of
their time so thank you so, so much.
The last day of school, Friday, May 24, is fast approaching and soon our school halls will be empty of students.
As they leave us for summer vacation, let us keep them in our prayers for a safe return to school in
August. During the Summer months, there will be much to accomplish in our school from cleaning to painting.
In the next few weeks, you may be asked to help out in one way or another. Your generous help will aid
us in preparing our school to be in the best shape possible to welcome our students back for the 2013-2014
academic year.
This past Monday on the Feast of Our Lady of Fatima, 22 women
of our parish made a consecration to our Blessed Mother.
Through their participation in a do-it-yourself retreat called
“33 Days to Morning Glory,” these ladies learned more about their
faith and deepened their commitment to the Lord through devotion
to our Blessed Mother. For myself, it was inspiring to see the response
of the women to this retreat and to see their excitement as
well. Their witness reminds us all of how important devotion to
Our Lady is and how it deepens our relationship to Christ.

The materialism of our society lures us to concentrate
more on what we want than on what God wants
for us and from us. It is good to know that, when we
are confused by our stewardship responsibilities, we
can call on the Holy Spirit to show us the way.

THANK YOU
Many, many thanks to all of you who donated to the
St. Raphael ProLife Mother's Day Shower. Because
of your giving spirit, we were able to transport many
bundles of cereal, toilet paper, juices, laundry detergent,
diapers, paper towels, baby clothes, personal
care items, a baby quilt, checks and a gift card.
The staff at the Inn was very grateful for the outpouring
of support. These gifts will help the mothers
and their children, housed at the Inn, who choose
Life, not abortion. May the Lord bless you for your
outstanding generosity!

ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL
Thank you to all who have picked up their ACA
pledge cards in the back of church the past three
weekends. ACA volunteers will now take on the
task of mailing out the remaining pledge cards and
following up with a phone call.
Help our parish reflect the glory of God, giving light,
warmth and comfort to those who benefit from the
many agencies and activities supported by the Annual
Catholic Appeal. Your gift very simply shines the
light of God’s love and His glory on those who come

I wanted to thank everyone who contributed to the
flower booth. I especially want to thank Mrs. Connor
who gave of her time at the booth as well as donating

SCHOOL REGISTRATION
FOR 2013-2014 SCHOOL YEAR
All returning school families must complete a Letter
of Financial Intent, $225 Resource/Technology fee
per student, Emergency Contact Form (one per
child) and, if paying monthly, an Eagle Bank Automatic
Withdrawal Agreement. Please attach a voided
check along with the Eagle Bank form. Tuition
for the 2013-2014 school year will be automatically
deducted starting in July and ending in June of the
following year. Forms can be found on our website
by clicking the registration link in upcoming events.

PRINCIPAL’S COLUMN
As the school year comes to a close, we will be saying farewell to our 8th Graders, the Class of 2013. Graduation
is a bittersweet time for our students and families, a combination of excitement for the future, fond
memories of the past, and sadness about leaving their parish school home. We pray that our 8th Grade students
follow God’s path for them, that they keep Jesus close in their hearts, and that they always remember
the parish community of St. Raphael the Archangel.

I’d like to take this opportunity to reflect on this past school year, a “Year in Review,” if you will. We made
a number of positive changes at St. Raphael the Archangel School this year, including:
• Returned to traditional schedule which brought peace and order back to our school
• Provided 8th Grade with its own classroom again
• Offered Standard and Challenge Math for Grades 6-8
• Created 3 lunch periods, resulting in quieter and smoother lunch time
• Tweaked Library size, schedule, and purpose to meet student needs
• Implemented weekly e-newsletter, The Guide, for the school community
• Focused on differences in learning across all grade levels
• Added a regularly scheduled school counselor
• Utilized Learning Consultant to provide classroom and testing accommodations for all students with special
learning needs
• Upgraded testing process and results for students with special learning needs
• Improved communication between school and families of students with special needs
• Offered regular Spanish instruction for all students K-8
• Held quarterly informal parent feedback gatherings with the Principal
• Re-focused school community on implementation of existing discipline policy
• Transformed professional conversation and exchange of ideas among teachers through concentrated professional
development focused on best practices in education
There were some bumps in the road as well, of course. Our biggest challenge this year was the implementation
of PowerSchool, our online school information system. We continue to try to learn this complex system
and to make it work in the best possible way for our school. Our implementation of the uniform policy
seemed inconsistent at times, with varying opinions about shoes and the colors allowed. We also did not hold
students in the primary grades as accountable for following uniform policy as we did students in the intermediate
and upper grades. I plan to rectify that for next school year with some clearer policies for uniforms that
will, hopefully, be easier to follow. And our communication between school and parents was a bit bumpy at
first. The addition of Flock Notes, and the publication of our school Buzz Book helped improve communication,
and we will start the next school year with all of those important tools in place.
Looking forward, we are excited about some of the positive changes in store for 2013-2014:
• Daily Mass
• Writing of a new curriculum PreK-8
• Strings Program (violin instruction for PreK-8), more info coming!
• 2 Math classes per day for Grades 6-8
• Mobile technology for classrooms, laptops and/or ipads
• Standard and Challenge Math, English, and Literature for Grades 6-8
• Middle School free-time lunch period
• Bellarmine Speech curriculum to add to 6-8 extra offerings, in addition to History Day and Science Fair
• Phasing out use of pre-made workbooks in a number of classes and grade levels
• Adding more focus on hands-on activities which encourage critical thinking
These changes and additions will make us even stronger than before as we strive to provide the absolute best
possible Catholic education in town. Thanks so much to the parish community for supporting our wonderful
Catholic school. With your prayers and support, we are able to do amazing things for our students. Please
continue to keep all of us in your prayers as we end this school year and look forward to the next. And remember,
“It’s always a great day to be an Angel!”
