FIRST HOLY COMMUNION
Last Sunday, our second grade class received the Sacrament of Holy
Communion. The class practiced for many months as they

Dear Parishioners,
PASTOR’S COLUMN
This past Sunday at our 10:00 am Mass we welcomed in a special way our second graders for the reception
of their First Holy Communion. The girls were dressed in their finest white dresses and the boys in their
khaki pants and blue blazers. For me, moments like this are so inspiring because of the great excitement the
children exhibit as they receive Our Lord. My prayer for them is that all of them will forever remember this
moment when the Lord drew so close to them.
A special word of thanks to the parish Men’s Club members who helped to prepare lunch for all of our students
this past Friday at our Annual Field Day Celebration. Each year members of the club take time out of
their schedules to prepare a wonderful BBQ feast for the children and spoil them for a day. A huge shout
out to Peggy Martin, our gym teacher, for organizing the many games and to the teachers and many volunteers
who helped to plan and execute the day. Our students had so much fun.
Last Saturday evening, several parishioners and school families gathered for our annual progressive dinner.
Thank you to all of our hosts for the evening and to all who attended this fun event. It was a great way to get
to meet new friends within our parish. If you missed out this year, don’t worry, it will be back again next
year.
Our Parish Picnic is next weekend. If you have not taken the opportunity to volunteer, there are still many
slots available during the day. In addition, make plans to join your fellow parishioners on the parish grounds
for some wonderful BBQ, beer, chicken and pork dinner, games and rides. On Friday evening, we will enjoy
the music of Rob Edwards and his band, “The New Wave,” who will play a selection of songs from the
80’s.
This weekend Jamie Zarse and Justin Palmer will be concluding their time with us. I would like to take this
opportunity to extend to both of them my deep thanks for their presence at the parish. Over the course of the
past nine months, each of them in his own way has contributed to the life of the parish. Please extend to
them your thanks as well.
During my time as secretary to then Archbishop Burke, I learned of his work in the inauguration of the
Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in La Crosse, WI. This July 28-30th, I will be leading a pilgrimage to the
shrine. The pilgrimage will begin on Sunday morning with a chartered motor coach ride to La Crosse, WI.
On Monday, we will join His Eminence Raymond Cardinal Burke for a conference and Mass in the Shrine
Church. Following lunch in the lower level of the Church, we will participate in a Holy Hour. The remainder
of the day will be at your leisure to explore the many devotional areas that include the Rosary Walk, the
Memorial to the Unborn and the Shrine Gift Shop. Our evening will conclude with a special dinner in the
Culina Mariana with Cardinal Burke. For more information, you can check out the parish website.

When we let the daily pressures of life trouble us,
we begin to believe that we are responsible for taking
care of everything. This causes us to frantically
cling to our time and treasure. Yet, Jesus tells us not
to be troubled or afraid. Take a deep breath, pray
and place your trust in God. When you do, you will
be a better steward of all that God has placed in your

It is time for School Board nominations for the 2013-
2014 academic year. Like last year, nominations will
be placed in a hat and Monsignor Breier will pick
three names to fill the vacant spots.
To be nominated, you must be either a school parent
or a parishioner of St. Raphael the Archangel. Each
position is for a three-year term. Meetings are held
once a month on the 3rd Monday of the month.
If you would like to nominate yourself or someone

SCHOOL REGISTRATION
FOR 2013-2014 SCHOOL YEAR
All returning school families must complete a Letter
of Financial Intent, $225 Resource/Technology fee
per student, Emergency Contact Form (one per
child) and, if paying monthly, an Eagle Bank Automatic
Withdrawal Agreement. Please attach a voided
check along with the Eagle Bank form. Tuition
for the 2013-2014 school year will be automatically
deducted starting in July and ending in June of the
following year. All forms should be turned in to the
school office no later then May 15. If you have any

PRINCIPAL’S COLUMN
Dear St. Raphael School Families and Parishioners,
None of us can believe we are in our final month of school, but here we are! It’s a great reminder about the
importance of taking full advantage of every moment we have in school together with our students.
The issue of how we spend our time with students has been part of the conversation following my announcement
a couple of weeks ago that our students will be attending daily Mass next school year. I’d like to take
this opportunity to talk about that a bit further.
The idea of students attending daily Mass is, of course, not a new one. “Back in the day” this was a normal
part of the routine of Catholic education. Monsignor Breier and I, along with the School Board, feel that
moving back to that routine is important on a number of levels. First and foremost, the Holy Eucharist and
Mass are the center and foundation of our Catholic faith. Putting the Eucharist and Mass front and center at
the beginning of each school day is a powerful way to make sure our students begin each day with prayer and
grace.
Second, having our students attend daily Mass allows Monsignor Breier and Father Suren to become regular
religious educators of our children, in addition to their teachers. What a gift and blessing that will be! We
will still have scheduled religious instruction in our classrooms, and we incorporate our Catholic faith into
everything we do throughout the day. We are very optimistic about the positive growth in faith that daily
Mass will bring to our community.
Be assured that, even with daily Mass added, our core instructional time for academics remains the same. As
you know, I am deeply committed to pursuing excellence in academics at St. Raphael the Archangel School,
and I am joined by Monsignor Breier, the School Board, and the entire faculty in that commitment. We are
working very hard to lift up our standards of excellence in academics as well as excellence in our Catholic
faith, always pursuing an appropriate balance between the two.
Many thanks to Mrs. Jennifer Runiewicz and our 8th Grade Class of 2013 for a beautiful Mass on Wednesday,
May 1st, celebrating the May Crowning of Mary. This is a wonderful tradition at SRA, and I couldn’t
have been more pleased with the beauty and reverence of the celebration.
Please remember, our Parish Picnic is coming up, on May 10th and 11th. We will have a full day of school
on Friday, May 10th, but NO HOT LUNCHES WILL BE SERVED ON THAT DAY. The cafeteria will be
closed to students, and they will eat their lunches in their classrooms just for that day.
Please send in your enrollment paperwork for next school year as soon as possible, so we can firm up all of
our plans for the coming year. And finally, please join me in praying for our students and teachers as we approach
the end of a successful school year.

Saint Raphael’s Summer Camp program offers ten “themed” weeks of fun activities: Bible studies, art &
crafts, swimming, gardening, field trips and guest visitors. We will explore the wonders of the world around us
with outings, adventures and exploration. Themes include: Trust your instincts (A week of fun games and obstacles),
Artful Antics (taking art to a whole new level of fun), Myth busters, Mysterious Sea Creatures just to
name a few. Our Vacation Bible School is Everywhere Fun Fair, Where God's World Comes Together.

The children at St. Raphael Preschool sponsored a
Trike-a-Thon to benefit the St. Jude Research Hospital
for Children. For an hour, these little ones rode
tricycles, bicycles, or scooters around the gym while
parents and elementary school students cheered them
on.
The total money collected equaled $2,503. Wow!
Congratulations, Preschool, for your enthusiasm and
energy, and thank you to all who donated to the
cause!

Chicken & Pork Steak Dinners
Dinners will be served from 4-7pm on Saturday only,
in the cafeteria. Adult dinners are $9.00 for your
choice of Hodak’s fried chicken or delicious barbequed
pork steak, with potato salad, coleslaw, dinner
roll, dessert, iced tea or coffee. Children’s chicken
strip dinners are $6.00 with applesauce, chips or
macaroni ‘n cheese, dinner roll, iced tea or milk. Carry-outs
are available.
Desserts for Picnic Dinner
No picnic meal would be complete without the delicious
desserts baked by our parishioners! If you are
able to help out by baking a dessert, please bring it to
the school cafeteria on Friday, May 10, 3-5pm, or
Saturday, May 11, 9-11am. Cake cutters needed in
cafeteria, 11am-12pm on Saturday.
Picnic Ride Armbands
Available Again This Year!!
Saturday only armband presale price is $35 and good
from 11am-9pm. A combined day Friday (5-10pm)
and Saturday (11am-9pm) armband presale price is
$55. Armbands are encouraged to be purchased presale—this
will save time and $$ for you the day of
the picnic!
Prices will go up to $40 for Saturday only, and $60
for combined day armbands if purchased on picnic
days! Individual ride tickets will not be sold presale
– they may be purchased on picnic days.
Individual ride ticket prices are $2.00 each. Most
rides will take one ticket, but some may take two
tickets.

SPRING PARK CLEAN-UP
& PLANTING DAYS
Saturday, May 11th is planting and clean-up day in
Francis Park. Friday, May 10th is planting day in
Willmore Park. Volunteers are needed to help keep
the parks beautiful. Meet at Tamm & Nottingham
8:30 am Saturday or Hampton and Jamieson 9:00 am
Friday.
All type of help is needed from gardening to manning
the sign-in table. No experience is necessary.
We have tools and gloves or bring your own. Students:
