One ofthe ways kaizen is achieved is through the use ofpoka-yoke or fool proofing in the methods thatare used to make the products.TheCustomerfocus.customer’s perception ofquality must be taken into account in settingacceptable quality levels. In other words, aproduct isn’t reliable unless the customer says it’sreliable and service is not fast unless the customersays it’s fast. Translating customers’ qualitydemands into specifications requires marketing(or product development) to develop a product(or service) that can be produced to consistentlyachieve that desired level of quality. The quality ofa product or service may be defined by the qualityof its design (product quality) and the quality of itsconformance to that design (process quality).Design quality refers to the inherent value of theproduct in the marketplace and is thus a strategicdecision for the firm. Conformance quality refersto the degree to which the product or servicemeets design specifications. It should be evidentthat a product or service can have high designquality but low conformance quality, and viceversa.Both design quality and conformance qualityshould provide products that meet the customer’sobjectives for those products. This is often termedthe product’s fitness for use, and it entailsidentifying those dimensions of the product (orservice) that the customer wants and developing aquality control program to ensure that thesedimensions are met.Implementing TQM:Companies have adopted several approaches toimplementing TQM. However, only when quality istotally integrated into the day-to-day operationsof the firm can a TQM program be truly successful.The implementation of a successfully qualityprogram throughout an organization is not asimple undertaking. The two major causes for theinability of firms to successfully adopt anorganization wide quality program: “lack of focuson strategic planning and core competencies, andobsolete, outdated cultures.”In addition to these two underlying causes,companies have identified other obstacles like,lack of companywide definition of quality, lack offormalized strategic plan for change, lack of acustomer focus, poor inter-organizationalcommunication, lack of real employeeempowerment, lack of employee trust in seniormanagement, politics and turf issues etc, thatneed to be addressed if a quality program is to betruly successful within organization.ENGINEERING SUMMARY1.
