Then there is Jawad Ahmed,with his "Taleem For <strong>Al</strong>l" program and many moreworth mentioning.Various organizations are being set up to pursuethis mission of philanthropy namely PCP (PakistanCenter for Philanthropy) set up at Islamabad witha mission to enhance the volume andeffectiveness of philanthropy in Pakistan byfacilitating collaboration between the variousstakeholders. Other than governmental setups,responsive community-based philanthropyorganizations are bent on improving the society’sfuture at all costs. These non-profit organizationsare making their presence felt with the passage oftime. The Citizen’s Foundation, which is workingto deliver quality education to underprivilegedchildren, is an example worth mentioning.The Government of Pakistan has at many a time,appealed for assistance from the common folkand they have replied with enthusiasm and vigor.According to a survey, in 1998 alone,approximately 50 per cent of Pakistani individualsgave an estimated total of Rs 770 billion (or 2.2per cent of GNP) in money, goods and voluntarytime. Other than our nationals, the expatriatePakistanis are also playing a major role, setting uporganizations like UFP (United Fund for Pakistan)and DIL (Development in Literacy) andcontributing generously to our localphilanthropists (Edhi Foundation receives fundsfrom around 13 countries).Fostering the expansion and development ofphilanthropic action will require continuous andvigorous attention. The impacts of these changes on thenatural environment are complex.Numbers of motor vehicles (millions)The number of vehicles is growing fast in allregions. Transport now accounts for onequarterof world energy use, and about onehalfof the world's oil production; motorvehicles account for nearly 80 per cent of alltransport-related energy. Transport is thus amajor contributor to greenhouse gas emissionsand urban air pollution
