Then there is Jawad Ahmed,with his "Taleem For <strong>Al</strong>l" program and many moreworth mentioning.Various organizations are being set up to pursuethis mission of philanthropy namely PCP (PakistanCenter for Philanthropy) set up at Islamabad witha mission to enhance the volume andeffectiveness of philanthropy in Pakistan byfacilitating collaboration between the variousstakeholders. Other than governmental setups,responsive community-based philanthropyorganizations are bent on improving the society’sfuture at all costs. These non-profit organizationsare making their presence felt with the passage oftime. The Citizen’s Foundation, which is workingto deliver quality education to underprivilegedchildren, is an example worth mentioning.The Government of Pakistan has at many a time,appealed for assistance from the common folkand they have replied with enthusiasm and vigor.According to a survey, in 1998 alone,approximately 50 per cent of Pakistani individualsgave an estimated total of Rs 770 billion (or 2.2per cent of GNP) in money, goods and voluntarytime. Other than our nationals, the expatriatePakistanis are also playing a major role, setting uporganizations like UFP (United Fund for Pakistan)and DIL (Development in Literacy) andcontributing generously to our localphilanthropists (Edhi Foundation receives fundsfrom around 13 countries).Fostering the expansion and development ofphilanthropic action will require continuous andvigorous attention. Globalwarming is the new global menace where theworld must come together in order to avert aglobal catastrophe.Effects of Life Style on Global Warming:Nearly half of all people now live in cities; anincreasing number of them travel enormousdistances every year by private car and in aircraft.In the developed world, technology hastransformed patterns of work and family life,communications, leisure activities, diet andhealth. Similar transformations are under way inthe more prosperous parts of the developingworld. The impacts of these changes on thenatural environment are complex.Numbers of motor vehicles (millions)The number of vehicles is growing fast in allregions. Transport now accounts for onequarterof world energy use, and about onehalfof the world's oil production; motorvehicles account for nearly 80 per cent of alltransport-related energy. Transport is thus amajor contributor to greenhouse gas emissionsand urban air pollution
An Outlook on Immense Loss Due toGlobal Warming:The world water cycle seems unlikely to be able tocope with the demands that will be made of it inthe coming decades.Land degradation has reduced fertility andagricultural potential. These losses have negatedmany of the advances made through expandingagricultural areas and increasing productivity.Tropical forest destruction has gone too far toprevent irreversible damage. It would take manygenerations to replace the lost forests, and thecultures that have been lost with them can neverbe replaced.Many of the planet's species have already beenlost or condemned to extinction because of theslow response times of both the environment andpolicy-makers; it is too late to preserve all thebiodiversity our planet once had.Many marine fisheries have been grossly overexploited,and their recovery will be slow.More than half of the world's coral reefs arethreatened by human activities. While some mayyet be saved, it is too late for many others.Urban air pollution problems are reaching crisisdimensions in many of the mega cities of thedeveloping world, and the health of many urbandwellers has been impaired.It is probably too late to prevent global warmingas a result of increased greenhouse gas emissions;in addition, many of the targets agreed on in theKyoto Protocol may not be met.Reasons behind Getting in Such Position:In terms of historical emissions, industrializedcountries account for around 80% of the carbondioxide buildup in the atmosphere to date. Since1950, the US has emitted a cumulative total ofroughly 50.7 billion tons of carbon, while China(4.6 times more populous) and India (3.5 timesmore populous) have emitted only 15.7 and 4.2billion tons respectively. Annually, more than 60%of global industrial carbon dioxide emissionsoriginate in industrialized countries, where onlyabout 20% of the world’s population resides.The modern industrial economies of NorthAmerica, Europe and parts of East Asia consumeimmense quantities of energy and raw materials,and produce high volumes of wastes and pollutingemissions. The magnitude of this economicactivity is causing environmental damage on aglobal scale and widespread pollution anddisruption of ecosystems.Global Polluters (2004)By Carbon dioxide emissions through humanactivities as a percentage of total emissions:1. Italy 1.6%Role of United Nations:The largest body dealing with climate change isthe UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on ClimateChange (IPCC) where its climate scientists havereleased a number of reports detailing theprogress in understanding climate change.Role of U.S.:US have obstructed International deal:Much of the growth in emissions in the developedworld stem from rapid industrialization from theindustrial revolution era. The US with its $14trillion economy is the world’s largest polluter andhas acted as an obstacle to any agreement onemission reduction targets. This is because the USis unable to decouple economic growth from itshuge energy use. In other words, economicgrowth needs to be protected and any agreementon emission reduction would affect economicgrowth as industry would be restricted on theamount it can pollute the air.
