A long line of weary parentswith their offspring hanging from theirarms surrounded this full-scale model, the star of Disney-Pixar’s Cars movie. Each child in turn walked up and got his/her picture taken beside Lightning. Youknow, I would too if I was 30 yearsyounger!Walking among these metallic artworksone has to wonder why manywould spend so much time and moneyon something they probably never drive. But it’s thanks to those who do havethese trailer queens and share them atshows like this for car nuts like us whoneed a fix on a nice winter day.MONSTER TRUCK10 Northlander February 2007

As you read this edition of theNorthlander the first 30 days of the NewYear have passed already. It seems thattime is moving faster as I get older (Iwonder how many of you feel the sameway). Recently I was around my familyand the younger members seemed soeager for birthdays that held with them“adult” responsibilities while those thatare nearing their thirtieth do not seem soanxious that the years fly by. The importantthing seems to be to remember tomake some “fun” every day.I bring up the subject of birthdaysbecause this year North Country Regioncelebrates its thirtieth year. It is nice tosay that we still have some of the chartermembers within the region. Northlanderwill highlight some of the history of theregion as well as some of the activecharter members throughout the year. Inthe January edition you already read thestory of one charter member, JudyHendrickson. If you have not already come out duringthe first 30 days of the winter seasonto an NCR event, consider coming to onein February. The Porsche 914 might be one of theleast loved lines offered by our favoritemarque, but the car did sell well andalmost 35 years later is, to my pooreyesight, a classic machine. In highschool I first started noting these machines. At that time most were just oldcars, not really well cared for, and inNew England anyway, most I saw werewell and truly starting to show deepeffects of the dreaded tinworm. But eventhen, I liked the sharp edges and sort oflow squat boxy look about them. Theneighbor of one of the gals I was chasingeven had a junky rust bucket of a 914parked under a big old oak tree, but Iliked the car, which in my mind made agood excuse to call upon Sheila. I mayhave gotten over Sheila, but I still lust forthe 914.Introduced in 1969 to replace the aging912, the 914 in all its various configurationslasted until 1976 when it wasreplaced by surprisingly enough a modelcalled the 912E which lasted but a yearbefore the 924 was introduced. Originallyintended as a joint Porsche/Volkswagen project, Porsche had a handshake agreement with Volkswagen ChairmanNordoff to purchase body shells ata low rate and would then fit Porschedrive trains. With the untimely death ofthe VW chairman and no written contract,VW’s new chairman Kurt Lotzsubsequently increased the price of theunfinished cars to Porsche making thePorsche 914-6 much more expensivethan originally intended, approachingthat of the top of the line 911.February 2007Est-ce plutôt une Porscheou une Volkswagen?Well the above is French, not German, but still, is it a Volkswagen or is it aPorsche? In the US anyway, the 914 wasmarketed as a Porsche, in the rest of theworld, however the car was marketed asa VW-Porsche causing some confusionand was also, less affectionately knownas a “vopo” which would be slang for thethen East German Secret Police. In fourcylinder configuration the car utilizedinitially a 1.7 liter Volkswagen derivedpowerplant, later upgraded to 2.0 and1.8 Liter variations. As mentioned above,a more sporting 914-6 used the six cylinderengine lifted from the 911 and wasmarketed as a Porsche.Mid Engine LayoutAdvanced for the time, the car used amid engine layout with the enginemounted in front of the rear axle givingvery favorable front/rear weight balance.Touts a period advertisement, “The reartrunk of a 914 contains 7 cubic feet ofempty space. That’s room enough forthree good-sized travel bags, a set of golfclubs and a small ray gun.” Obviouslythe copy writer didn’t know my wife, weare hard pressed to fit our bags for a longweekend in the back of our station wagon, let alone the back of a 914. But the copywriter continued; “Up front is anothertruck with even greater space than theone in back (9 cubic feet of empty space).Besides having two trunks, the 914 hasthe unique distinction of being a Porschewith an earthy price.” No, that is not a17 Northlander

spelling error, the 914 had an “earthy”price. Maybe to go with all those mushroomsour writer was enjoying in late1969; what with thinking that the carcould hold three good size bags and a setof golf clubs. And what is with the Raygunreference? No my earthly belongingswould not fit as described. In any eventour copy writer continued “The doorsare nearly 4 feet wide, you can actuallyget in and out without tucking your kneesunder your chin. The engine and gearboxare positioned behind the seats inour race car tradition. It also gives moreroom for your legs up front.”Having driven a couple of 914’s I canwell and truly say, our copy writer abovewas being less than forthcoming in thedescription of climbing into the 914.Now I am not that tall, nor am I short, however climbing into the 914 is a truetest of courage, the steering wheel sittingvery low causes the thighs to get stuck, requiring a little kink in the knees and anElvis inspired hip shake to get positioned. Now my size 9 Converse All-Stars find the foot well and well, whereis all this leg room? No, care is needed tofind a place for the left foot when not declutchingand the right foot has a tendencyto catch on both the throttle andthe brake. Still I love the car.Engine Choices914-6 (1969-1972) As mentioned earlier,Porsche had to change tack when thehandshake deal with VW fell through.Intending to sell the 914-6 in larger quantities, the high price of the chassis fromchassis builder Karmann made for a difficultselling price, just below the 911T,and likely at not the targeted profit margin.Only 3351 of the Porsche powered914-6 were manufactured between 1969and 1972. They used a 2.0 Liter Flat sixwith carburetors, producing 110 HP, essentiallylifted from the 911T. The 911Talso donated brakes and suspensioncomponents of the 914-6.914/4 - 1.7 (1969-1973) The Flat fourType 4 engine from the Volkswagen wasfitted with fuel injection to power theoriginal Volkswagen variant. This powerplantmade a healthy 80 HP anda good number of unitswere sold, more than65,000 from 1969through 1973.914/4 – 2.0 (1972-1975) While the 1.7 litercar continued through1973, 1972 saw the introductionof the 914/4 -2.0. The six cylinder version was discontinued, replaced by a 2.0 liter type 4engine, in this configuration producing91HP. The 2.0 liter outsold the 914/6 bya healthy margin, over 32,500 units beingbuilt.914/4 – 1.8 (1973-1975) In 1973 the1.7 liter engine was replaced with a morepotent 1.8 liter type 4 unit which madeall of 76HP. Ah, astute readers will ask,if the 1.8 liter is more potent then whydid the 1.7 make more horsepower? Keepin mind these were the early 1970’s andeach year from 1969 though 1974 newfederal regulations continued to sappower with the introduction of such devicesas air pumps, while simultaneouslya car’s weight increased with such inventionsas “impact” bumpers. Yes the1.8 was bigger and offered less. Buyerspurchased less as well and only about17,700 units were built.18 Northlander February 2007

By the end of production over 118,000914/4 and 914/6 cars had been built. While this had been a brief history, asearch of the World Wide Web can bringyou a wealth of additional information, some my favorite pages includes:914garage.com(French, but youreally have to read thehistory and technical discussions inFrench to really appreciate the car … Leconcept novateur retenu par Porsche lorsdes études sera celui du moteur central!).914world.com914club.comTHE 914 THEME CONTINUES THRU THIS ISSUE WITHPHOTOS FROM '06February 200719 Northlander

A short story to describe the new BLAIRTALBOT MOTORS facility.David ChurcherBlair’s name first came to my attentionwhile I was still living in Germany. My 911 had just become a reality but waswaiting for me in New Hampshire. Acolleague also living in Germany proposedthe best mechanic in our area wasthis chap Blair Talbot.Happiness followed. I returned to theUSA, went to the Rennsport Reunionthat weekend, I met Ellen Beck that week, picked up the Porsche the next weekend. And I met Blair a week later. All was good until Blair shortly afterwardsclosed his shop near Rochester. Ithen had my first dose of “Porsche Panic”… ie: what to do now? Before the panicsettled in or was resolved Blair called tosay he would take care of a few of us withthe older cars. And that was the beginningof service to my 911 and many, many interesting conversations.Servicing the car at Blair’s shop involvesmore than up fixin der Porsche. Itinvolves a complete explanation of whathas happened, why it happened, whatwork he has done, cautions to take infuture, etc. Following the completion ofthe job I have always been involved indeep and long conversations aboutPorsches in general and details of racingcars in particular. Blair’s knowledgegained over years runs deep. His perspectiveis all practical. Mine is moretheoretical … years of reading and dreamingof designing and building a car. Geometryfor suspensions which rattlesaround my brain comes into reality perspectiveduring these conversations. Andwhen Blair and I are not talking cars Barbjoins in with food conversations. Oh, wedo enjoy a good curry.Early in ’06 I detected Blair was reallybusy with a house job and time was short.I wondered what we would do if myPorsche repeated it busted transmissionact. I wondered if Blair was about to giveup on der up fixin and retire in to builderand occasional racer.Later in ’06 we were in to one of thoseafter the job is done conversationswherein Barb and Blair began to talkabout the new shop and all the space itoffered. Plans for car storage. Plans fortwo lifts. Plans to tink simultaneous onany number of cars.“Tink”. What is “tink”? “Tink” is aword often found in Blair’s conversations. As in: “Dave, I love to tink.” Or: “Itinked with it and found out what theproblem was ...”I think this word can be defined as: aprocess of applying years of experiencewith a great deal of pleasure until anoffending automotive problem is found, and, removed. On a bright but cold December Saturdaymorning I visited the new shop totake a few pics and to chat with Blair.Clearly he was excited for the future ashe walked around explaining where variouspieces of equipment would go, where20 Northlander February 2007

cars would be stored, walls that would becovered with Porsche posters, Porschecalendars, (and I hope a couple of DaveChurcher originals), where the tricyclerace would be held.Tricycle race? It is a not un-seriousproposal by one of our NCR colleagues. There is space enough. It could be agood way to keep track skills in formthrough the winter. As our conversation wound down andBlair began to realize he had yet to takea Canadian visitor shopping for US bargainshe said: “Dave, I am so excited.”Now the shop is open and in full swingI hope those interesting chats at the endof a job will continue.I am sure they will.Since the above story was written andthe first panorama photo made a fewweeks have passed. On a wet Saturdayin early January I returned to see theprogress. The lifts were in, the alignmentmachine was about to arrive, postersdecorate the office area, and the shop hasa red black yellow colour scheme.Porsches are every where. Tool boxesare lined up. Andre arrived with his toolbox and his daughter Brittany. With teenageenthusiasm Brittany described my911 as “cute”. I corrected her by sayingit is “beautiful”.And, Blair is still excited. This article has been written as a feature to describe a new facility in our areaprovided by one of our members. THE SLEIGH RIDE THAT WASN'TBy Judy Hendrickson, MiriamDunster, Joe Kraetsch, Lisa Roche,Larry Singer, Paul Tallo,DavidChurcher, Helmi Churcher, Bob &Laura FuttererA starry night greeted ten hearty NCRsouls. As the snow hadn’t yet arrived, our sleigh became a wagon with hay.Our driver, Skip, and faithful Belgians,Pat and Roy, took us on a turbocharged tour around the farm. Lightsglittered, cameras flashed, wheelsrumbled. Helmi must have gotten freshwith a tree as she got slapped by a branchsomewhere along the ride. The headlights revealed they werereally taillights. Fortunately, there wereno exhaust fumes.Around the campfire Judy demonstratedthe fine art of roasting marshmallowsin layers while Lisa just wore hers.Attempts at song were made by Larry— “409, 409, she’s so fine my 409.” Butnone knew any Porsche songs.Much double entendre reigned — Skipgot married December 31st, they gotmarried for better or worse — she couldn’thave done better and he couldn’t havedone worse.A fine evening it was. THENEWPORSCHEMUSEUMOne of the great pleasures of living inGermany was the proximity of thePorsche museum. I was a frequent visitor. Now the new museum is almostcompleted. It is massive when comparedto the old museum. It will house acomplete history of Porsche. A return toGermany is a must and, perhaps, weshould ask our Social Chair to organizea "treffen" for us.The accompanying two photographs, andthe following text, is from PressePorsche. The new Porsche museum takes tothe air.Stuttgart. 450 days after the groundbreakingceremony, the shell of Dr. Ing.h. c. Animportant construction phase is thus concluded:the underground car park, groundfloor, first floor and central girders, the“cores”, made from reinforced concretehave been constructed. At total of 21,000cubic meters of concrete have been used. The around 100 employees – partlythanks to the mild weather of recentweeks – have made rapid progress, evenduring the cold season. Many night shiftswere arranged to lift major parts of theconstruction into place by crane, and onseveral occasions SchwieberdingerStrasse (B 27) was closed on one sideduring at night when there was littletraffic on the roads.David ChurcherLift shafts, stairwells and service channelsare now in place continued the three on page build- 2430 Northlander February 2007

This month we continue our look backthrough the Northlanders over the past29 years, looking at that first year (1978)and every 10 th year.30 Years Ago (Volume 1, Number 2)February 1978The first thing that caught my eye wasthe inside front cover ad – Porsche createsa new Porsche – the 924! Michael’sPresident’s column reported the impendingvote by mail of the PCA ExecutiveCouncil on our charter and the plannedcharter presentation party on March 18 th .Six autocrosses, a rally and a tech sessionwere the announced planned eventsfor the year with a calendar showing thefirst half of the year with these NCRevents as well as other local sports carevents – Ice Races on Newfound Lakeby the COM club. NER was holdingAXs at the old Orange Airport back then.Editor Jim Smith reprinted the PCALegislative Liaison Bulletin No. 5. Thisis no longer a position on the PCA Nationalstaff, but, back then, many thingswere happening in DC that impacted us.This report dealt with the status of airbag legislation and minimum fueleconomy standards. Air bag legislationhad been defeated for implementation in1982 and PCA was encouraging the fightagainst such legislation and encouragingincreased use of seat belts as a better wayto save lives. On the fuel standards front, proposed numbers would essentiallymean the end of Porsche as we knew it –either doing away with it altogether or soemasculating it that it would no longerbe a “sports” car.February 2007There was a tech article on CD Ignitionfor the 914 – Another solution to the914 starting problems, a member profileon NCR Treasurer, Mitch Manseau andhis wife Joanne, another pencil rally andmore cartoons from E Zelz. There’s asmall world story with Joanne and I – wewere fellow classmates in Air Force OfficerTraining School at Lackland AFBin late 1969. CONTINUED FROM PAGE 3510 Years Ago (Volume 20, Number 1(February/March 1997)Not sure what happened to a Januaryissue, but this one is clearly labeledNumber 1.Officers are President: Fred Bruch,Vice President: Ellen Beck, Secretary:Scott Martineau, Treasurer: Steve Baker,Membership Chair: Bob Tucker, NewsletterEditor: Miriam Dunster and PastPresident: Judy Hendrickson. We alsonow had a growing list of Committees(Autocross, Technical, Safety/SeniorAdvisors, Driver’s Ed & Club Racingand Rally). The newsletter is an impressive 32pages and back to its 8.5 by 5.5 formatwith heavy stock cover and trimmed, clean appearance. Format is definitelycomputer created with a publishing layoutprogram. It boasts an impressive sixfeature stories, four stories on upcomingevents and seven regularly appearingcolumns. The Internet is definitely gainingground. Everyone has an email addresslisted and a list of PCA Region/Porsche related website addresses areoffered for perusal. The Treasury is upto a balance of $9481.81 with annualexpenses of just over $30,000. The articlesand columns are upbeat and it isobvious everyone is having a good time.Abe Anderson thanks everyone for receivingthe first Doug Hendrickson EnthusiastAward. There’s a pull out calendarfor the fridge outlining not only NCRevents (and there are many) but neighboringregion events and Zone 1 eventsas well. Based on info in some of thecolumns we are only in the second yearor so of putting on DE’s as we added asecond event – a 2-day event at NHISrun jointly with Metro NY. There arearticles on every aspect of PCA life, DE,Noted author Steve CarpenterClub Race, Rallies, Tech material, etc. Many articles aren’t necessarily aboutthings automotive, but just fun narrationsof events in people’s lives. It’s areminder that material for theNorthlander then and today need not bePorsche or even car related, just of humaninterest. It’s a way for us to get toknow one another better, to gain insightto one another. So, that said, put pen to paper orfingers to the keyboard as it were and letyour fingers ramble over some event orexperience that stands out more or lessin your memory. Share it with your fellowPorschefiles in North Country. Don’tworry about your spelling or grammar. We have people to fix all that. BTWAfter our planning meeting in NovemberI was relating Miriam’s commentson insurance (from Zone 1 meeting) tomy colleague Martin from the BMWWhite Mountain Club. Below is Martin’sresponse. Big Brother is watching!David ChurcherThis has been an issue of debate for anumber of years in the BMW club too. Both insurance and factory warranty...Club racing: definitely not covered.On-track (non-timed) performance driversschools: usually (but not always)covered.On-track (timed) performance driversschools and time trials: sometimes (butrarely) covered.Autocross (timed): usually (but notalways) covered.Road rallies (not races) (timed (TSD) orun-timed (Touring)): virtually alwayscovered.BMW NA was in litigation a while backwith the E46 M3 and over-rev issues. Asfar as I recall, BMW lost and was coveringfailed engines.Insurance is another gray area monsteritself. It’s pretty much at the discretionof the individual insurance companies. To paraphrase the BMW club’s “official-unofficial”stand on insurance andwarrantee coverage relating to clubevents: It is the car owner’s responsibilityto “know before you go.” We tell allparticipants that they should confirmtheir coverage from their dealers andpersonal insurance agents before playing. The club is not liable for “issues”not covered by the manufacturer or insurancecompanies.btw- When I was active in auto-crossingin the late 90’s in Salem we actuallycaught (and kicked out) a few “spies”taking photos of license plates ofMitsubishi Eclipse and Eagle Talons atour events for use in potentialclaim denials.LET OUR EXPERIENCE HELP YOUMAINTENANCE – REPAIR9 NEWTON ROADPLAISTOW, NH 03865Mark Nadler (603) 382-3599February 200753 Northlander
