This month we continue our look backthrough the Northlanders over the past29 years, looking at that first year (1978)and every 10 th year.30 Years Ago (Volume 1, Number 2)February 1978The first thing that caught my eye wasthe inside front cover ad – Porsche createsa new Porsche – the 924! Michael’sPresident’s column reported the impendingvote by mail of the PCA ExecutiveCouncil on our charter and the plannedcharter presentation party on March 18 th .Six autocrosses, a rally and a tech sessionwere the announced planned eventsfor the year with a calendar showing thefirst half of the year with these NCRevents as well as other local sports carevents – Ice Races on Newfound Lakeby the COM club. NER was holdingAXs at the old Orange Airport back then.Editor Jim Smith reprinted the PCALegislative Liaison Bulletin No. 5. Thisis no longer a position on the PCA Nationalstaff, but, back then, many thingswere happening in DC that impacted us.This report dealt with the status of airbag legislation and minimum fueleconomy standards. Air bag legislationhad been defeated for implementation in1982 and PCA was encouraging the fightagainst such legislation and encouragingincreased use of seat belts as a better wayto save lives. On the fuel standards front, proposed numbers would essentiallymean the end of Porsche as we knew it –either doing away with it altogether or soemasculating it that it would no longerbe a “sports” car.February 2007There was a tech article on CD Ignitionfor the 914 – Another solution to the914 starting problems, a member profileon NCR Treasurer, Mitch Manseau andhis wife Joanne, another pencil rally andmore cartoons from E Zelz. There’s asmall world story with Joanne and I – wewere fellow classmates in Air Force OfficerTraining School at Lackland AFBin late 1969. The Treasury had a balanceof $93.99.The most interesting item was a shortnarration (Chapter 1) of how we came tobe. See page 44 in this issue for a reprintof this narration.20 Years AgoNo February 1987 issue.CONTINUED ON PAGE 3735 NorthlanderC
