5 SHERWOOD FOREST RESTAURANT S T O R M W A T E R R U N O F F P R O J E C T Ron Faust, GCOLA Board Member Stormwater runoff, the rain that doesn’t soak into the ground before it gets to the lake, carries significant amounts of phosphorus, other pollutants, solid debris and leaves into a lake. All of this affects water quality adversely. Historic Sherwood Forest Restaurant is surrounded by land running across the Lake Shore peninsula to both Gull Lake and Lake Margaret. The property is dotted with tiny log cabins which are nearly as old as the restaurant. These structures were sold as individual condos several decades ago and they are still beautifully maintained. While some spots were noted where shoreline improvements could be made, a roadway running all the way down to Lake Margaret was found on the southwest corner of the site. Starting as part of Lincoln Green Road which comes around the restaurant, a paved driveway extends down to a parking lot for cabin owners. From there an even steeper path of broken concrete used for snowmobile access extends to the lake. The impervious surface runs all the way from the middle of Highway 77 to the shore of the lake. Surface measurements and elevation data led to calculations that a 1” rainfall could drain over 8,000 gallons of water into Lake Margaret. Plat maps showed that most of this driveway was on City property; this was one of a number of small roads originally platted in Lake Shore to provide public lake access. Of these, only one on the Gull side is used frequently for that purpose; Koob’s Landing provides vehicular access in the winter but not often in the summer because of its lack of parking space. Professionals at Lakeside Lawn and Landscape designed a plan for building a series of shallow rain gardens along this driveway to capture stormwater runoff. Once planted with native species appropriate to the setting, these gardens are expected to enhance the visual appeal of this historic site. Handicapped access to the lake will be maintained. Most of the funding will come through Cass County Soil and Water Conservation District which has grant funding for improving water quality on the Gull Chain. The Lake Margaret Conservation Association is also partially funding the project while the City of Lake Shore and its Environmental Committee have coordinated the planning. This is one more step in efforts to get Lake Margaret removed from the impaired waters’ list.
ENDOWMENT PARTNERSHIP O F F T O G R E AT S TA R T The members of the GCOLA Board of Directors are excited to report overwhelming support for the newly created Gull Chain Preservation Endowment Fund! In response to a mailing in December 2011, $22,245 has been donated to the Fund, created in partnership with the Initiative Foundation of Little Falls. Our current amount brings us near our initial goal of $25,000. When that goal is reached, the Initiative Foundation will match those funds. We then have another opportunity to raise an GULL CHAIN of LAKES ASSOCIATION $50,000 for matching funds $40,000 $30,000 Currently $22,245 $20,000 $10,000 additional $25,000 to also be matched by the Initiative Foundation, allowing the Endowment $100,000 in funds. The Board wants to extend heartfelt appreciation for each and every donation. This response is a clear sign that those who live, work or play on the Gull Chain of Lakes have a commitment to preserve our wonderful natural resources.
