The projectthe worldis watchingBoundary Dam IntegratedCarbon Capture andStorage (BD3 ICCS)Demonstration ProjectSaskPower is leading the development ofthe world’s first and largest integrated cleancoal/carbon capture and storage project atthe Boundary Dam Power Station in Estevan,Saskatchewan, Canada.The $1.2 billion government-industry partnershipbetween the Government of Canada, Governmentof Saskatchewan, SaskPower and private industrywill see the full integration of a rebuilt coal-firedgeneration unit with carbon capture technology intothe operation of a commericial power station, resultingin low-emission electricity and carbon dioxide (CO 2 )for enhanced oil recovery operations.The Role of CoalSaskatchewan has an estimated 300-year supplyof coal. Lignite coal currently provides more than50 per cent of provincial electricity. Coal-firedgenerators operate 24 hours a day, seven daysa week, and are a very reliable form of electricalgeneration. It is essential that SaskPower has thesebase load generators in the supply mix. However,doing so in today’s economic and regulatoryenvironment requires meeting new standards toaddress emerging regulatory requirements and tosatisfy new societal demands.The BD3 ICCS Demonstration Project will transformthe aging Unit 3 at Boundary Dam Power Stationinto a reliable, long-term producer of more than110 megawatts (MW) of clean base load electricity,while enhancing provincial oil production and reducinggreenhouse gas emissions by capturing one milliontonnes of CO 2 per year.Research has shown that CO 2 can be safely andpermanently stored in underground geologicalformations such as deep saline aquifers.
