NATIONAL CONVENTION REPORTSubmitted by Dr. Mark DeNunzio, National TrusteeMonday August 8th was the first plenary session. The biggest news of the day was that the Article 110 inquiries into thevote to allow the National President to serve 2 consecutive terms was not needed as the issue was researched andalthough a motion was made to limit the President to one term it was never passed and adopted. The true convention started Tuesday. Acting Grand Lodge President Carolyn Cianciotta gave a wonderful welcomingspeech to the delegates in attendance. Dino DiLiberti came all the way from Tampa to sing the Italian National Anthem tohelp open the convention. These two individuals certainly represented the Grand Lodge of Florida extremely impressively.During the session the minutes of the previous convention were corrected to include that at the 2009 Convention theassembly voted to limit the national conventions starting with the 2013 convention to 5 consecutive days. ActingPresident of PA John Foradora stated that the minutes as presented should at least have every motion made and votedon by the assembly. The Chair agreed and will try to have improved minutes available.Supreme Lodge budget was presented with a recommendation for a $1.00 per year increase for both 2013 and 2014.Much discussion about the effects on Local Lodges and retention of members. Finally a compromise was suggested andan increase of only $.50 per year in 2013 and 2014 was voted on by the Convention and passed by a significant margin. Most notably the delegations from Massachusetts and Pennsylvania voted against the compromise package. There was much discussion both in committee and on the convention floor of Pennsylvania's proposal for the 2013convention to be in Philadelphia. The supporters of the Philadelphia convention made the points that travel for those fromthe Northeast would be easier and also the airport in Philadelphia would be cheaper to fly to than the other site proposed,Bonita Springs, FL. Also, the advantages of being able to walk to attractions in Philadelphia was a plus. The parkingsituation in Philadelphia was a minus because it will cost about $20 a day for parking in Phil. while parking is free at theHyatt in Bonita Springs. The meal plans for both hotels were comparable as were the give backs in the form of free suitesand upgrades. In the end the assembly voted for a Phil convention.Bylaws-There were very few states that submitted bylaw changes for their Grand Lodges. Florida had by far the most. Most ofthe other states bylaws were approved with the exception of those trying to have e-mail used for notification. The Floridabylaws not involving e-mail were all approved. The bylaw regarding distribution of the Floridian using e-mail and web sitewas approved. All the other bylaws that were submitted were disapproved. The National Orator will be working onchanges to the Supreme Bylaws to allow e-mail so I feel that it would be worthwhile to resubmit our e-mail bylaws nextconvention.CSJ meeting was mostly about budget items. The CSJ is an independent arm of OSIA and has its own 501c(3)designation as a registered charitable organization. It receives most of its funding from the Supreme Lodge. There arevery few donations to the CSJ and they do not have a fund raising event. It was suggested that by moving the CSJ backin with the Supreme Lodge would save accounting and administrative costs. This idea will be explored further. Presentlythe CSJ receives $1.50 per member per year to operate. Many of the operating expenses are calculated as being apercentage of the costs paid by the Supreme Lodge for instance rent, office personnel salaries, website, insurance, etc. These expenses leave little for specific CSJ programs. The Chairman of CSJ Santina Hammerle from NY is trying tostrengthen this committee and will be seeking more funds to implement programs. She is also trying to better organizethe Grand Lodges CSJ directors to improve communication and advance the committee programs. The National raffle with tickets being sold for $50 each was a moderate success. Approximately 1100 tickets were sold. The winner was a local lodge from California which received a prize of $9000, somewhat less than was anticipated but afigure that was included on the tickets if a sufficient amount were not sold. There were 10 other $1000 prizes awardedduring the Saturday Marconi Dinner. The Convention delegation approved a membership recruitment program that will offer gift incentives for sponsoring newdues paying members. There will be 3 levels of prizes for recruiting 2, 4, and 6 members. Also for each new member theybring into the Sons of Italy the sponsoring member's name will be entered into a raffle for a trip to Italy. The program isslated to run from Jan 1, 2012 through June 30, 2012. More details will be forthcoming from the National Office.THE FLORIDIAN/September 20113 | P a g e

ALZHEIMER’SVincenza DiLiberti, ChairHearing a diagnosis of Alzheimer‟smust be a devastatingpronouncement knowing in yourheart there is nothing on earth thatcan change it or even cure it. Thishappened to “Richard” who lives inCalifornia; “this rocked my world,”he said. Knowing the progressioncould be either slow or at a steadypace, Richard decided to do all thethings he had put off doing formany years. In addition, to keep himselffocused he has been in contactand receives support from theAlzheimer‟s Association on both alocal level and from national headquarters. Also, since he is in the early stages of the disease, theAlzheimer‟s Association has designated him anadvocate and has sent him to lobby in bothSacramento, CA and Washington,D.C. on behalf of funding forAlzheimer‟s research and care. The support he has received andgives to those also inflicted withthis dreadful disease has givenRichard the ability to give a voiceto all those with early stages ofAlzheimer‟s. One assumes thisdisease afflicts elderly people, when in truth there is no agedistinction. Richard is in the primeof his life at 48 years old but yethe knows he will never mentallyknow old age.Even though his Alzheimer‟s has restricted him atsome point, he still feels a passion for life – for livinglife to the fullest and doing all he can to supportthose individuals like himself.“While I am still able, I want to articulate and give voice to what it is like to walk inThese shoes and let people know that given this diagnosis, we are capable ofcontributing to the world around us.Please listen to our voices – individually and collectively.”Stay well and remember to tell those dear to you how much you love them, VincenzaVISIT OUR WEBSITESNATIONAL: osia.orgGRAND LODGE OF FLORIDA: www.osiaflorida.orgTHE FLORIDIAN/September 20117 | P a g e

CANCERJeanette D’Alesssandro, ChairLet me begin by thanking President Mottola forallowing me the opportunity to serve asChairperson for this committee which has probablyaffected most of us or our families. It is hoped thatour contributions may have helped our researchersget closer to a remedy for this deadly disease, cancer. My humble thanks to all Lodge Presidents whopresented donations on behalf of their Lodgemembers at every council meeting the past twoyears. As a "breast cancer survivor," I centered my firstreport on it. Women who take aspirin after theircancer goes into remission are about 50% likely tohave a recurrence or die from the diseaseaccording to an ongoing Nurse Health Study at theBrigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. OCVAX,an experimental vaccine designed to "teach" theimmune system to kill cancer cells, may offer somehope for the future.Another topic was "Colorectal Cancer." Regularscreening is the most powerful weapon forpreventing colorectal cancer. Most people have nosymptoms of the disease so screening is veryimportant especially if there is a family history ofthe disease. When polyps are detected early, theycan be removed and lower your risk. It takes 10 to15 years for them to develop into cancer. The keyto screening is finding the cancer early when it ishighly curable.Another type is "Oral Cancer" which falls into thehead and neck category. This cancer is largely alifestyle disease since the majority of cases arerelated to tobacco and alcohol use. If you are aman, you have twice the risk of developing oralcancer, and ifyou smoke anddrink, the risk is15 times greater.Found at earlystages, oralcancer has an 80to 90% survivalrate. For all types ofcancer, it is mostimportant to seeka second opinion.Your doctorwon't mind and most welcome one. A diagnosis ofcancer can be scary and a treatment planconfusing, thus another opinion is very helpful in atreatment plan. What is cancer? The body has millions of livingcells, grow, divide and die in an orderly way. In theearly years, normal cells allow a person to grow. Inadults, cells divide only to replace worn outdamaged cells. Cancer begins when cells start togrow out of control and form tumors. Not alltumors are cancer, they are called benign. It is hoped that my reports have been helpful inunderstanding this dreadful disease. Most of theinformation in my reports are studies at theBrigham and Woman's Hospital in Boston; OngoingNurses Health Studies; American Cancer Society, phone 1-800-ACS-2345 and newspaper andmagazine articles. Our goal is to eliminate the wordCancer from our vocabulary. My thanks for all members who have madedonations the past two years.THE FLORIDIAN/September 20118 | P a g e

CALENDAR PROGRAM - CONVENTION REPORTBernard DiGiovanni, ChairWelcome brothers and sisters to the June 2011 Grand Lodge of Florida Convention. My name is Bernard DiGiovanni and I am, and have been, the Chairman of theCalendar Program for the last 6 years. What is the calendar program? It is one ofmany things that the Grand Lodge of Florida does that helps the local lodges, itsmembers, and of course the Grand Lodge as well. It is an 11X17 annual calendarwith a three digit number in the lower left hand corner. That number, if you own it,and when it is the same as the evening cash three Florida Lottery number makesyou a winner. What do you win? Each day of the month and for all 12 months (Febto the following Jan) there is printed a dollar value which is the amount you wouldreceive if you owned the calendar with the winning three digit number. Prizes rangefrom $50.00 to $1000.00. Are you with me so far?You do not have to monitor the daily number as that is what they pay me the bigbucks for. I have a list of all the lodges that have calendars for sale and includedwith that list is the names of the owners when they purchase those calendars. I monitor the daily numbers and send outa check to the lucky winners. In many cases they are surprised when they receive the check in the mail. The Calendar Program normally sells for $50.00 for the year, but if you act right now, as of July 1 st the calendars go onsale for only $35.00. This is a bargain as there are 7 months left in the program with the big prizes yet to come. On July4 th the prize is $500, Columbus Day and Christmas the prize is $1000, and New Years its $500. In that span of time thereare nine $100 prizes as well as all the other days when the prize is $50. I like to call this program a win, win game wherethe local lodges, its members and the Grand Lodge of Florida come out winners. The local Lodge members win, whenthey buy a calendar, having a three digit number for 365 days of the year and have a chance of winning more than onceduring the year. Your local Lodge wins because when you buy a calendar your local Lodge gets credit for the sale and atthe end of the year the money left over after expenses is divided among the Lodges that participated in the program viathe number of calendars bought by it members and friends. An example: In the year 2010 we had enough money leftover in the program to give each Lodge $18.00 for every calendar sold. One Lodge sold enough calendars that year toreceive over $1,000.00. Now I ask you, what Lodge could not use that kind of money for so little effort and for bringing agame of chance to its members who if they are anything like my members, love a game of chance? So if your officers arenot hounding you to buy a calendar ask them how come? And if you are an officer and haven‟t exposed your Lodge tothis win, win game I just happen to have some extra 2011 calendar‟s with me and would be glad to give you some totake back to your Lodge. So see me at the end of this meeting or at any time up until Sunday morning and I will behappy to welcome you to our game.THE FLORIDIAN/September 20119 | P a g e

COOLEY’S ANEMIAKaren DiGiovanni, ChairThe Grand Lodge of Florida together with the Supreme Lodge aregenerous philanthropists and have concentrated their efforts onAlzheimer‟s, Cooley‟s anemia, Cancer and just recently Autism. I havebeen the Chairperson for the Cooley‟s anemia Foundation for 3 years andhave a personal interest in this cause as my husband had a cousin whohad Cooley‟s anemia and died before puberty. This was the future forthese children many years ago. Today people with thalassemia can enjoyand live normal lives. A recent study examined pregnancy in women withthalassemia, an area of increasing interest in the Thalassemia community. The study examined 58 pregnancies among 47 women with thalassemiamajor and 17 pregnancies in women with thalassemia intermedia at fourcenters in Italy. The study reports that conception was spontaneous in allof those with thalassemia intermedia; among those with thalassemiamajor induced ovulation was required in 33 of the women.According to the study 91% of the pregnancies among thalassemia major patients resulted in live births (45single births, 5 sets of twins, one set of triplets). Women with thalassemia intermedia who had never beentransfused or who had only minimal transfusion prior to pregnancy were found to be a risk of severe anemia iftransfusions were required during pregnancy. Of the 17 Pregnancies in thalassemia intermidia 15 resulted inlive births. The study concludes that provided a multidisciplinary team is available, pregnancy is possible, safe and usuallyhas a favorable outcome in patients with thalassemia. Unfortunately there was nothing in the report of thebirths and whether they contacted thalassemia from the pregnancy. But the fact that women with thalassemialive to give birth is in its self a wonderful advance that was made possible because of your generosity and theleadership of the Order Sons of Italy in America. It is the seat ofthe Roman CatholicArchdiocese of Milan. There is a differencehowever in how the religionis practiced. Their Catholicrite is known as theAmbrosian Rite or (Italian:Rito ambrosiano) whichvaries slightly from theRoman. Some of thedifferences are in theCanons for Easter andLent, the colour of theliturgical vestments, the particular use of incense, marriage form, office for the dead, baptism by immersionand in the calendar. The church bells use a peculiartechnique. The liturgical music does not use theGregorian chant, but the official Ambrosian chant whichwas established earlier than the Gregorian. Now for the future the city is undergoing a wide urbanrenewal.
