A p r i l 2 0 0 9 • P a g e ÚcwalmicwPoliticsCould We Elect an Aboriginal PrimeMinister?Voting in B.C.’s39th ElectionSylvester Samsylvester.sam@inshuckch.comLast month we explored race, nowwe explore how our different systemsof government (Canadian vs.American) also make the roadsused different. There are similaritiesbetween the Canadian and Americanelectoral systems, for example, most politicians start out doing localissues before moving into areas ofgreater responsibility but then thingsget complicated. The Americans dothings differently than we do.The United States has a two partysystem (Democrats and Republicans)which elect people to congressand select people to a senate. Thepresident is elected by the people, allthree hundred million of them. Thepresident’s party generally elects themost people to congress but if theydon’t, they still have a ‘veto’ theycan use to quash any bills. In Canada, we have three hundredand eight ridings, each having fouror five different parties putting someoneforward. Ridings are generallyalong population lines rather thanprovincial ones. This shows up whenyou consider Ontario has one hundredand six seats and Quebec hasseventy-five while BC has thirty-six.If the winning party doesn’t have onehundred and five seats they do notget to pass any laws. We are in themiddle of such a situation, but thisjust means any bill needs approvalby all parties to pass.As I have said, if we were to considerhaving an aboriginal run for PrimeMinister, we would run into manyproblems Obama didn’t have on hisrun to the White House. Aboriginalsdo not think outside tribal lines. Ourcultural identity is still importantto us so it would play a part in allour decision-making. Could nativesrun a separate party catering to us?Could aboriginals join establishedparties and then move up the lineuntil someone could run for PrimeMinister? An aboriginal party running in theelection has been tried to no successsince there are thirty-three millionCanadians and only one million ofthem are aboriginal. The systemwould need non aboriginals to votefor them and there are too many partiesfighting for the same votes. Themore reasonable road to 24 SussexDrive (the Prime Minister’s home)would be to join an established partyand make changes along the way. This way would work if all FirstNations could put aside their tribalissues and work towards a commongoal. Could an aboriginal garnerenough members’ votes to be electedleader? This is something to chew on but thebiggest question would be: Wouldan aboriginal even consider runningfor Prime Minister? We have beentaught since we were young that allaboriginals are competing for everythingwe get. If we could get overthis stumbling block we could do somuch.General Voting Day is May 12, 2009from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. (Pacific time). If you aren’t available to vote onGeneral Voting Day or will be out ofthe province, there are several alternativevoting dates and methods youmay want to look into these include:Advance voting, Absentee voting, and Alternative Absentee voting.Advance votingAdvance voting will be held from 8a.m. to 8 p.m. from May 6 - 9, 2009.Be sure to bring all the pertinentidentification necessary for regularvoting.Absentee VotingIf you are unable to attend yourassigned voting station on GeneralVoting Day or make use of Advancevoting, you may vote at any othervoting location in the province.Alternative Absentee VotingThere is also the option of AlternativeAbsentee Voting. We read a little articleabout Guatemala then we had tocompare and contrast what we’dlearned about Guatemala with ourown cultures, language, food, or education. My group looked at culturesand language. We shared how ourlanguage is now, who still speaks it,and who teaches it. For culture, wenamed off activities like beading, weaving, hunting, fishing, sewing, potlatches, and traditional ceremonies. Then we presented what we’dlearned to the rest of the groups. My second session was “Tradesand Beyond.” This gave us a betterunderstanding of the different jobopportunities that exist in tradesand how you can become an apprentice.I was the only one fromour group who went to this session.Later, I shared what I’d learnedwith rest of my youth over lunch. The “Trades and Beyond” sessionlooked at the different trades thatexist and how you can get involvedin them. Well, women can workin any field from welding, hydro, plumbing, carpentry, to wood carving(making stools, chairs). WeContinued Kalisa p 15This year’s youth conference wasa lot of fun for me and a little bitdifferent because I never really gota chance to learn another Nativelanguage at this youth conference before.I really liked all the workshopsthat I went to.My first session was called “TraditionalMétis Humor”. In that session, the instructors showed us a MétisJig Dance. From my point of view,it was a really neat dance to learn.I didn’t do the dance in the sessionbecause I was taking small videos ofit with Kerry’s camera. One of theinstructors told us about one of theinstruments that people would playfor the people that were dancing. This instrument was like a bass type.It was this grey/silverish tub with astick attached and a string tied to thestick. When you pluck the string italmost sounds like a bass guitar orsomething like that. After the session was over we wenton a short break and then we went toContinued Basil p 14

A p r i l 2 0 0 9 • P a g e 1 4YouthÚcwalmicwContinued Basil from p 13our second sessions of the day. Mysecond session was called “YouthHelping Youth.” This session was alittle fun for me but not really (ha,ha). For this one we were dividedinto a few groups and then eachgroup got a topic. Each topic wassomething we had to compare toour own cultures and to the Mayanculture.Doing this small project, I met withlots of random people, which wasfun because they were all nice tome and that was cool. I made a fewfriends too. Also, I found out thatour culture has a few things in commonwith the Mayan Culture. Thethings we have in common are thatwhen we do ceremonies, the FourDirections usually get honoured orthanked along with our Ancestorsand our Elders. It was cool to findout that the Mayan people are thesame way when it comes to ceremonieslike that. After that session was over we got toeat a really good lunch in the GrandHotel Ballroom which was reallynice, by the way. I loved that hotel. After we ate lunch Kerry took usto the mall and she told us that wecould walk around on our own, butwe had to meet her back at the car infront of the mall in an hour.Darryl and I went one way andeveryone else went another. I almostwanted to laugh at myself becausewhen we were walking back to thecar, I almost forgot where it wasparked. Then I started to smell thefood from the restaurants that wehad both noticed when we got to themall. We followed the smell and gotback to the car before the girls did.The next day, I went to my 3rd session. It was called “Aboriginal YouthEngagement”. This session was byKen Watts. This is one of the sessionswhere they got me to stand upin front of a large crowd and talk tothem (ha, ha). For this project wewere numbered off from 1-4 andsplit into groups. Each group wasgiven a topic and my group wasasked to look at ways of gettingpeople to learn about our culture andour language. My group decided topretend that we were making a webpagelike the First Voices, and wecame up with a few good ideas. The next workshop I went to afterthat one was called “AboriginalYouth Opportunities”. This is theother session where I got up in frontof a crowd. Before we did anythingin this one, the instructors got us tothink of a body movement or a dancemove that we like to do and thencombine it when we said our name.I liked that part because when it wasmy turn I got everyone including anElder woman to throw the EastsideSign up (ha, ha) it was awesome. We also learned about what doorscan open up for Aboriginal Youthwhen it comes to careers over ourlifetime. It was cool that the instructorswere Interns from the program,so they were able to tell us how theexperience was for them. They alsoanswered any and every question wehad for them about the program.Following that, I went to the AboriginalSportfit session. This sessionwasn’t bad but it was kind of neatto be in. I only participated in threethings in this session. The first onewas Vertical Jump, second was theBasketball Throw, and the third wassomething called the Storkbalance(I think I’m not too sure), but it waskind of fun.On the last day of the conference, the last workshop that I went towas called, “The Cree and MichifLanguage Workshop.” It was in thisworkshop that I got to learn a fewwords in another Native Language. The Instructors taught us a fewwords in Cree. We also got to learnmonths of the year, questions likehow are you and what not. Whenthe session was about half over, the instructors showed us how toweave yarn the same way they makescarves. Mine didn’t turn out so good(ha, ha) because mine was woven reallytight in different spots and it wasalso loose in other spots. After I finished my scarf, we wentback to our hotel room and got ourbags ready to go. I can’t wait untilnext year!!!! It’s going to be a blast. Thanks for reading everything Iwrote, because it took forever towrite in the car on the way backhome (ha, ha).Nilh Apu SkwatsitsuuBasil PetersDo not protect yourself by a fence, butrather by your friends. —Czech ProverbYou can make more friends in twomonths by becoming interested in otherpeople than you can in two years by tryingto get other people interested in you.—Dale Carnegiewww.quotationspage.com/

I also expressed thatI wanted to be youth worker in thefuture for Samahquam and Skatin,so that I can share what I’ve learnedwith those who are younger than me.Then Felix had me stand up to thankme for speaking and knowing theimportance of learning our cultureand what the Elders have to say.Right now, I’m actually sharing witheveryone who reads the newsletter. As youth we need to learn about ourculture and our language, because weare the next generation and it is ourduty to teach the young ones.I don’t know where the conferenceis going to be next year, butwe need more youth to attend it. Iwouldn’t mind going again, but I’mgoing to give the older youth fromSamahquam and Skatin a chanceto give it a try. It will be great!
